  • First Keen's, was hesitant, but so far it's been good.
Size: 10.5 Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown
Got these after reading a ton on them and the Merrell Moab's. I was a bit concerned about the recent durability issues mentioned for both shoes/brands. Would hate for them to start falling apart after a few months of use. I tried the Moab's and wasn't a big fan. I got the Keen's and have been wearing them for only a day and so far they're pretty solid. They look/feel very well made. Definitely need some breaking in. Will update the review if they start flailing on me! I did get on Keen's site and saw that they have a 1 year warranty on the Targhee's (and maybe all shoes?). Turns out it's honored even if you buy through Amazon (assuming it's not a dubious third party seller sending out fakes). So if they do start coming undone in the next 12 months, I can at least go to them directly. ... show more

  • Included footbeds are absolute junk.
Size: 9.5 Color: Bungee Cord/Black
As a Heavy Keen hiking boot user over the past 15 years with thousands of miles hiked in Keen, Merrell, Solomon, Lowa, Vasque boots my beef with Keens is the lousy, soft foam they use between their treads. It gets instantly chewed up hiking on rocks (sharp) and then the tread detaches in chunks. Such a lame and obvious engineered obsolescence feature. If it wasn’t for their excellent features I’d never buy another pair. They’re usually unbelievably comfy right out of the box. And their waterproof claim holds up. This pair had these weird thick injected rubbery foam inserts that caused extreme discomfort on the outside of my right foot. Other users complain about this very same issue. Other than that I’m happy to report that they’ve used more rubber tread between those soft spots on the bottoms so these should hold up longer than all my previous pair. I popped new inserts in them and no more pain. ... show more

  • Targhee 3 is a Great Mid Hiking Boot for the Casual Hiker
Size: 9.5 Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown
I got size 9.5 in Black/Olive and it is beautiful. Very high quality. Good for manicured easy trail running or short walking. I am an Army guy and I hike a lot, and I know boots! This one recommended. It will take about 3-4 weeks to break it in BEFORE long trips or backpacking (in house, outside to mailbox or block, then outside trail 2-3 miles FIRST - break in gently so feet don't hurt). I call it a short trip, day use boot and waterproof. But can go longer and take abuse. They are tough and will last long term. Learn to lace them correctly and center that tongue. Try a 1/2 size larger for thick socks. PROS: Color and leather quality, laces easy, has a great sole and bottom (soft and sticky). Pretty! Affordable on Amazon $85 to $100 sales. Lightweight not heavy. Can wear anywhere. No toe jam. CONS: Warm, little sweaty so get wicking medium socks, stiff above the ankles (will rub above ankle on skin of outside leg and cause pain, and red abrasion if not broken in first), I feel almost every little 1/2 inch stone on front foot pad of sole as I walk, so get thicker inserts (it is too flexible and not enough padding) but has great cushion on heel). Good socks are a must. Some say damages breach the WP (small tears toward the bottom) - see YouTube. ... show more

  • Good Light Weight Boot With Reservations
Size: 9.5 Color: Drizzle/Keen Yellow
Keens, mens Targhee III Mid Height Hiking Boot is a very good lightweight boot, with a few caveats. I live in northeastern Minnesota and put anywhere from 3-8 miles daily into these boots. Back in the woods, there exists nary a level foot plant, and trails are littered with rocks, roots, and seasonal moisture. My feet, which require occasional maintenance, are in their 7th decade, and I continually look for light weight boots that at least accommodate my feet with a bit of ‘dignity. I may have found them. First, shop for the deal. Color of the boot means little to me, it’s the utility of the boot that matters. Picture of new boots compared to what boots will look like after six months. As lower part of uppers deteriorate, there’s little one can do. As uppers separate from sole, shoo-goo will address that issue. The boots are light weight, not a whole lot heavier than running shoes. What would a running shoe look like after 4-500 miles? The insoles are perhaps the best I have ever experienced in a light weight boot, and the soles themselves exhibit little wear and provide sound traction. Water resistance will deteriorate over time in-particular as uppers themselves deteriorate. My only real negative comment about the boots is that the tongue requires some gusseting. Unless one has ‘kankles’ or wears short gaiters, pebbles, bits of bark, etc will fall into spaces as tongue pulls away from ankle, and it will no matter how one’s laces the boot. as in picture. The boots seem to run just a tad large, which is fine for me as a heavier sock provides my feet with a bit more protection. Older very broken-in boots feel like that old pair of slippers. The Targhee III’s are excellent day hike and general wear boot. I don’t know if I’d carry a heavy pack with these boots, but they would make excellent camp boots. During my backpacking days, my dog, who carried his own pack (food, bowls, and a few other odds and ends) would also carry my camp boots. Bottom line, a good pair of lightweight hiking boots. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown
I work in an industry that requires lots of outdoor activity in variable terrain. I was considering going with some higher end boots that cost a lot more than these do but I'm glad I didn't! These have been comfortable to wear on my feet all day, stayed dry in the rain, and have provided a sturdy tread. These types of boots typically don't last me very long so I will be curious to see how many miles I can get out of these! Overall I am happy with my purchase so far! ... show more

  • Best shoes you’ll ever have.
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown
I go through shoes like toilet paper. Live in the mountain with very rough ground. Walk miles a day. These shoes fit like you put your foot in a mold. I’m used to climbing muddy grass hills while slipping and sliding like I’m on ice skates wearing new Rocky’s but these shoes would climb an ice hill. Litterally stood in a dozen truck bed on a hill and felt as sturdy as baseball cleats on flat ground. You want good shoes go keen ... show more
