I bought the KEEN Targhee 4s because my feet were tired of feeling like I’d walked barefoot across hot lava and gravel every time I stepped outside. These boots didn’t just meet expectations — they laced them up, stomped through a swamp, climbed a mountain, and yelled “LET’S GOOOOO!” Right out of the box, they felt like a firm handshake from a park ranger. Comfortable, supportive, and clearly ready for business. The waterproofing is no joke — I stepped in a puddle so deep I briefly considered calling it a lake, and my socks stayed dry as a dad joke at a BBQ. The traction? Unreal. I could probably scale a vertical wall if I wasn’t held back by my own complete lack of upper body strength. On uneven Alabama trails, they made me feel like a mountain goat with better fashion sense. Style-wise, they say “I hike, but I also know the value of a good sandwich.” Rugged but not trying too hard. The only downside is they make all my other shoes jealous. Absolute units. They hold up to everything I’ve put them through. I switch them out with the low cut models and I wear them everyday. Good lookin'. So what? Gap between laces is too wide. Most other brands seem to be wider though.I hate round strings because I don't tie correctly. Wish it had a more comfortable insole that could ease my arthritic big toe and neuropathic foot tendencies. How about a little more padding at the inside top as well just to stop the loose feeling? Old people are sometimes cranky so maybe I should mention the boots fit my wide foot well, ankle support is adequate, they're light, and I did not return them. I haven't had them in water, and time will test quality and value. Like your child--above average. ... show more

This boot is great for everyday wear. Not necessarily for hunting or real rough terrain, but it’s a comfortable, quality, boot that my husband likes for walking the dog in the desert and an everyday work boot for most everything. Fit is great and comfortable right out of the box.

I had a pair of Targhee II boots that lasted a long time. However, it was time to finally retire them. Because of their comfort and durability, it was an easy decision to go with the Targhee IV. I'm curious to see how well the glue-free, fused construction holds up.

About four years ago, KEEN made a significant change to the interior design of their shoes, and unfortunately, the new design just hasn’t worked for me. Since then, I’ve tried over a dozen other brands, but none of them have been a good fit. I’m still babying my pair of KEEN Voyagers from 5–6 years ago, hoping to make them last as long as possible. The KEEN Targhee 4 carries forward this updated interior design, and it has its flaws. The fit feels loose and overly spacious, especially around the roof of the toe box. It also lacks adequate padding in the areas where the laces are tightened. Overall, the fit is far from snug, and honestly, I dread wearing these shoes. That said, after logging over 100 miles hiking in the mountains this winter, I’ve made some adjustments to make them somewhat tolerable. I added a pair of active SOLE insoles to help fill the interior gaps and started wearing slightly thicker Darn Tough socks. These modifications help, but the shoes still fall short of the comfort and fit that KEEN used to deliver. Interestingly, REI stopped selling KEEN hiking shoes for a while, reportedly due to an issue with the glue used in the Targhee 4. It was odd to visit multiple REI's in different states and not see a single pair on the shelves for nearly a year. I’m not sure if this issue has been resolved, but I haven’t personally experienced any problems with glue on my pair. ... show more
