  • Keen Elevates Their Mid-Height Waterproof Hiking Boot Game! Keen Elevates Their Mid-Height Waterproof Hiking Boot Game!
Color: Bungee Cord/Black Size: 11
After many hours over several days spent researching the best lightweight waterproof mid-height hiking boot for less than $150, this is the pair I chose and so far, a week in, I’m loving them! If you really dig down into the reviews, the jury remains out. The reason for this is that all of the comparable 4+ Star boot reviews (500+ reviews) have major dissensions by a small, but fervent group of daily users. The negative reviews across boot lines point to a general decline in the newest generation of established boot brands. Keen is no different from the rest. People definitely love these boots, the negative ratings come from loyal customers who’re disappointed with what they’ve experienced as a major decline from the first version. Photos of torn stitching and soles that have become decoupled from the boot’s body are a stark reminder of what can become of these...or in fact any comparable boot. My experience with them is that after a week of daily wear on a farm in upstate NY, through water, frost mud and rocks, these boots have been nothing less than wonderful. They’re lightweight, super comfortable with no wear-in needed and not a drop of moisture has penetrated it’s tough outer shell. All stitching remains intact and no indications of stress has appeared on either the soles or bindings. Now, I‘M not either a Bureau of Land Management surveyor nor park ranger who wear these boots for 80 hours per week and longer. At that level of usage, what do you really expect from a $120 boot? It will be interesting to see what shape these will be in three months from now and I plan on reporting their status at that time. Until then, I’m loving these! Epilogue: These boots lasted almost 2-years and are well worth the money for time served. Got my second pair on and love them! ... show more

  • Comfortable, Supportive and Wears Like Iron
Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown Size: 10.5
This was my first pair of Targhee III mid waterproof boots. I previously wore Targhee II mid waterproof boots but when the III's came out I thought I would give them a try. I have a fairly wide forefoot (D+) but a very skinny heel (AAA). These boots provide plenty of space for wide feet in the toe box but at a the same time the lacing is such that I can snug them up to hold my skinny heels in place without slipping. The comfort is excellent right out of the box and it just gets better as they break in. Ankle support is also excellent with lots of cushioning. The lace loops are more durable than the II's because they are made of leather rather than nylon. I wore these boots almost daily for more than two years with no sign of wear. I also wore them on a long trip to Israel, Egypt and Jordan and they stood up to everything that was thrown at a them. After lots of long hard use one of the soles finally separated from the upper and I had to bid them a fond farewell. I replaced them with another pair of Targhee III's and am looking forward to more years of great service and comfort. ... show more

  • Love My Keens
Color: Bungee Cord/Black Size: 11
I've been buying Keen's for 16 years now and have gone through dozens of pairs of their hiking shoes. Lately, I have toned down my hiking, but I still like the Keen shoes for daily wear. I am a loyal Keen enthusiast not only because they make a great shoe, but once, in 2012, I had a pair of Targhee II that had a faulty eyelet that broke the first time I wore it. Keen promptly replaced the boots with no questions asked. That action by them made me a Keen customer for life. These Targhee III's are replacing another pair of Targhee III's that will now be relegated to yardwork only. These hiking boots have a relaxed feel - they are light and nimble (not heavy or clunky). I feel comfortable doing anything in these boots and that is why they are what I wear 80% of the time. My wife wears a more, 'traditional', hiking boot and she only wears those on the trail because they do well on the trail, but aren't great anywhere else. These Keens are champs on the trail and perform well in most other situations as well. I love that they are waterproof and that the soles are grippy. I have never lost my footing because of my Keens. If you've never worn Keens before, the toe box is large and roomy. My feet are narrow near the heel and normal up front - these boots are snug on my heel and leave room for my toes. ... show more

  • Comfort Great, Durability Horrible
Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown Size: 7.5 Wide
1.5 stars Overall I had these for < 1 year before they became useless. I wore them a few times a week for maybe 1 hour per wear, mainly walking my dog in a (sometimes) wet pasture. It's a shame because these would likely be my go-to boot purchase. 1/1 star for fit/function - these come in wide sizes and are very comfortable and function well (when brand new) as an all-around hiking & general-use boot 0/2 stars for durability - the dark strip of 'leather' (?) material where the upper meets the soles crumbled off after < 1 year - the soles came unglued after < 1 year 0/1 star for waterproofness - after a few months of use they were no longer waterproof and adding waterproofer did not help 0.5 stars/1 for warranty - Keen gave me a warranty credit towards a new pair of Keen shoes/boots. Unfortunately the replacement pair, a different model of waterproof boot, suffered the exact same issues as the Targhee III's. ... show more

  • Good Light Weight Boot With Reservations Good Light Weight Boot With Reservations
Keens, mens Targhee III Mid Height Hiking Boot is a very good lightweight boot, with a few caveats. I live in northeastern Minnesota and put anywhere from 3-8 miles daily into these boots. Back in the woods, there exists nary a level foot plant, and trails are littered with rocks, roots, and seasonal moisture. My feet, which require occasional maintenance, are in their 7th decade, and I continually look for light weight boots that at least accommodate my feet with a bit of ‘dignity. I may have found them. First, shop for the deal. Color of the boot means little to me, it’s the utility of the boot that matters. Picture of new boots compared to what boots will look like after six months. As lower part of uppers deteriorate, there’s little one can do. As uppers separate from sole, shoo-goo will address that issue. The boots are light weight, not a whole lot heavier than running shoes. What would a running shoe look like after 4-500 miles? The insoles are perhaps the best I have ever experienced in a light weight boot, yet after a while, no fault of the boot, my old feet rebelled, and an inexpensive orthotic purchased through Amazon solved the problem. The soles themselves exhibit little wear and provide sound traction. Perhaps one of the finer characteristics of this boot, and the Keen line, is a roomy toe box. Bravo Keen. Water resistance will deteriorate over time in-particular as uppers themselves deteriorate. My only real negative comment about the boots is that the tongue requires some gusseting. Unless one has ‘kankles’ or wears short gaiters, pebbles, bits of bark, etc will fall into spaces as tongue pulls away from ankle, and it will no matter how one’s laces the boot. as in picture. The boots seem to run just a tad large, which is fine for me as a heavier sock provides my feet with a bit more protection. Older very broken-in boots feel like that old pair of slippers. The Targhee III’s are excellent day hike and general wear boot. I don’t know if I’d carry a heavy pack with these boots, but they would make excellent camp boots. During my backpacking days, my dog, who carried his own pack (food, bowls, and a few other odds and ends) would also carry my camp boots. Bottom line, a good pair of lightweight hiking boots. ... show more

  • Great boots, lasted 10 months.
Color: Black Olive/Golden Brown Size: 12 Wide
These boots got used very lightly during the week, and extra heavy during most weekends for long hikes through Florida trails in sand, dirt, and mud. Good ankle support for versatile terrain, tread was never an issue, never slipped on wet rocks but I also didn’t test it often. Size I usually buy fit very well, 12w. A bit firm at first, but will break in. The pair lasted the 10 months with minimal care in cleaning (occasional brushing sand/dirt, keeping dry) Eventually the material started peeling and now the waterproofing’s compromised. Because of the waterproofing they run a little warm, but it’s worth the trade off on days after the rain not to have soaking wet feet. ... show more

  • Comfortable and waterproof sz 16
Color: Bungee Cord/Black Size: 16
After buying these they were immediately put to the test as I went to a friend's acerage to help him blaze hiking trails everywhere. Carrying hiking packs, chainsaws, water and gear. Prior to receiving these shoes I was on his property and at the end of the day my feet hurt so bad almost couldn't walk. After getting these shoes and doing the exact same style of performance my feet were not killing me, they were just tired from being used all day. That's when I knew I made the right purchase. I've since hiked various places, including testing the waterproofing. As long as the water doesn't go above where the tongue bends you're completely waterproof. I was removing brush and logs from creaks and my shoes were completely under water to the tongue bend line for hours and not one drop of water entered my shoes. Now one cream I had to cross with gear and that water went near the top of the shoe line where the last lace system is and my feet were soaked. I knew water would enter just didn't have a clue how much. However when you own the shoes and look inside you can see a silver material that lines to a certain height. That's the waterproofing. Anything above that line isn't the shoes fault for water. For my size foot it's hard to find good hiking boats but I must say I'm loving these shoes. Oh one last thing. When I first purchased them I secured my heel into the back of the boat and laced then up good and snug. I noticed pain right at the top of the boat. Almost to the point I was concerned if these would work for me. The pain came when I'd be on an angle hiking and that portion of the boat dug into my skin and bone. I chose to loosen the boats and tie tight before going up the last two tie systems. That fixed the issue while I went through break in. Now they're tied all the way to the top and no issues what so ever. ... show more

  • "Wide version" isn't that wide.
Color: Black/Brindle Size: 11.5 Wide
I mostly like these boots but it has a serious flaw hence the 3 stars. They are fairly sturdy and generally fit well. I purchased the wide toe box version. Yet at some point during a long walk/hike you realize the toe box just isn't all that wide and pinches my toes together. I have purchased 2 pairs and won't buy another one - I need a boot with genuine wide toe box so I can wear it all day. This is not it. ... show more
