There are hooks (like a wege , the last hook before tying) on each side that and you hook the shoe laces and it lock the lace so there no losing the lace pull pressure. Love these. Light weight,tough, keeps my feet dry, and comfortable. I work outdoors, sometimes in the rain. Im on my second pair. Only downside is the soles seem to wear out quicker than I'd like. Still fine for work, but if you are an avid hiker, i think they may only last a year or two.
