You will wonder how you ever got along without the grill. They are meant to increase your cooking area yes and they will. However, they provide for a third tier cooking level. Example. I used the heat deflector to hold a water tray. I'll be getting an 18 by 2 cake pan for my steam bath. This gave me the perfect distance from the water to keep three prime rib roasts moist for several hours. I also have used the additional distance it provides from the coals to roast 3 chickens without a problem.     • Entirely too expensive, but very high quality
Bought this for my Kettle Joe, as I can't seem to find any of the half moon grtaes thiat fit it anymore. This fits perfect on the basket that holds the ceramic tiles, as I was looking to run a water tray for long cooks. For reverse sears, it makes changing modes pretty easy. Just take the whole slo-roler off and use this as the low grate for searing. No need to handle the grates at all. Nice item to increase the area in the kamado joe. Works well to place ribs on top and still have a brisket on the main level.

    • Great when you need more room
This works great so you may wonder why 4 stars, mostly because 4.5 is more appropriate. It is a bit difficult to align on the rack and it isn't tall enough to have big cuts underneath. However, if you need to find a way to get 40-50# of pork butt on your Big Joe, this will do it.

    • The quality is as good as can be
This is a very heavy duty piece of equipment. It is well made and solid stainless. The quality is as good as can be. It is one of those things that cost too much but once you get it ---it is worth the coast of obtaining it.

Buy beware. The grill expander I received today had the prongs facing the wrong way and renders it unusable. Sending it back ASAP. Revised: User error!! When setting it up like the picture on the box, I mistakenly put the single prong side back further on the grill then what the product design allows. The legs are made to straddle parts of the base grill but do not align well and can be unstable.
