Picked this up for my niece, who loved it immediately. But not nearly as much as my sister and cousin, who spent countless hours playing with this as kids. This is perfect if you have someone that loves Barbie and all those typical "girly" dress-up toys and things, but you really don't want to keep filling the house with all that stuff. This lets them pick out the styles and outfits they want and color them however they want. They get to be their own little fashion designer. Seems to be strong plastic, is easy to use (no supervision), has it's own travel case, and is perfect for anyone young who can draw and color well right up through adults. These plates are great. My two girls love assembling various outfits and utilizing the plate system to make an crayon impression to then fill in color-wise. It's simple to use as you just open it up, select the plates for the various body pieces, and then put the piece of paper under the clamp. Once clamped you then just take the black crayon piece and rub it across the paper to get the etching. Then you can remove the etching and color as you want. We ended up using both the paper that came with the kit and using full printer paper and both worked. The paper that comes with it is smaller cut so it fits a bit better but regular paper does work so even if you run out you can continue the fun. Only downside is it's a shame there's no set of additional outfits to purchase as that would be a nice add-on for future birthdays as they really like it. ... show more

I had these when I was little probably 30 years ago and wanted to show my 6 yr old. She loves it! Doesn’t feel as sturdy as I remember but love the carrying case & def worth the price!

My daughter had fashion plates when she was youn* and so when I saw them in Disney Princess’ I thought I would get it for my great niece for Christmas. When she saw what it was, she was so excited. The set is made just like the original. Good quality.

I remember this fondly from my childhood and was happy to see it re-released - not only re-released but more or less like the original! The fashions are a little different, and the crayon is a little different as well. It's an actual crayon now, like a Crayola - I feel like I remember it being a mysterious black plasticy substance when I was a kid. I have written a review for the Melissa and Doug version of this toy as well and the M&D crayon holder grips better, but the fashion plates toy crayon holder works reasonably well, and the toy is otherwise superior to the M&D. We got the set with the little carry bag and everything stores very nicely. I think if you get the set without the bad you get crayons instead of colored pencils, and I don't see this toy working well with crayons at all. The plastic frame might be a little flimsier than when I was a kid, but the plates are nice and solid and my girls are able to get a good rubbing. Some of the plates, the neck and shoulders don't connect, but you can fill in with colored pencil for the final product. The paper this comes with is a little thick - we have better luck with 1/2 sheets of normal printer paper, in terms of getting a clear rubbing. Really nothing bad to say about this - my girls have been having fun with it, and it's just as I remember. We picked up the expansion plates as well which are clearanced right now at our "red circle store." I don't think I can mention the name but you will know what I mean. Great, creative, battery-free fine-motor-skill fun here. ... show more
