This is the real stuff -- copper. It's 16 gauge, as it will be used only in under 8 foot lengths. (Otherwise, I would have bought 14 gauge.) Even my old eyes can appreciate the all-copper cross section of this wire. But the label just says "speaker wire" which is what most sellers call the much cheaper (and less conductive) copper-clad aluminum (CCA) wire they sell. Wish it had been better labeled and that it came on a reel, not just a coil of wire wrapped in thin plastic, like saran wrap. ... show more

What to look for in speaker wire? Pure copper, flexibility, insulation marked for polarity. This wire has all these properties, and now that it's installed, I'm happy with it. The reason for only 4 stars is that it is impossible to separate the two wires by hand; it takes a diagonal cutter. Even after the first cut, it's impossible to pull the wires apart, so that, in my case, meant 2-3 cuts with the dikes between the two wires. My main motivation for getting this cable was the speaker manufacturer for my new front LCRs recommended 16 AWG for all short runs. I only had 18 AWG, and this wasn't expensive, so why not? Despite a handful of reviews mentioning the plastic getting stripped off when pulling apart the two cables, I didn't encounter that at all. I was able to separate the cables without any issue of the plastic insulation ripping. The first thing I noticed about the wire was that it didn't actually appear wider than my 18 AWG cable. That aside, one thing that was noticeably better was that each individual strand was significantly larger than in my previous cable, and in spite of that, the cable is still plenty flexible. I found this to be important in a good way because I've had issues with many individual strands breaking off, particularly when stripping the wire or attaching banana plugs. Did not encounter that issue at all with this cable and its meaty strands. After setting up one of my speakers with the new wire, I was curious to see if it would sound any different. After playing some music in Mono mode, I found that the low end mid range came across a bit deeper and richer than the speakers connected with my older 18 AWG cable. The highs were basically the same, but an obvious improvement at the lower end. I even asked my wife to do a blind test (she didn't know which speaker I connected), and she also picked the one with this wire as the best sounding one. All and all, this is a great copper speaker wire to get, particularly at its price. If you need new speaker wire and don't need CCA, just get this and be done with it. You'll be happy. ... show more

As others have said, it is difficult to split the wires without exposing the wires on at least one side. For short connections where you can be assured no other wires will make contact with the exposed wire - it should work out. But if you split the ends more than a couple inches I would not recommend this cable. I used precision cutters to carefully split the wires, but even then there were spots where the wire was exposed. And just physically trying to pull-separate the wires is disastrous. Once connected, the wire appears sonically great and the copper wire true to gauge. For a few pennies of insulation, this cable could of been great. ... show more

I see reviews where people have issues stripping or peeling the insulation. Coming from a harness builder, this wire is very good. Thick, tough, but easily strippable insulation. Conductors are consistently round lending to minimal broken strands during stripping. It peels apart with intention, and doesn't keep peeling accidentally like a pack of twizzlers. This stuff is worlds better than anything else in this price range including that garbage copper-coated aluminum wire. The strands are fine enough to clamp into terminal blocks well, but thick enough to prevent stray whiskers. Strength is excellent and you can pull it through tight locations without stretch or damage. The only con is that this insulation type tends to be stiff when cold. Make sure you bring it in the house to warm to ambient before stripping and installing. ... show more

    • Super high Quality Copper~ Not Cheap CCA Wire

100% copper wire. This is the real deal. CCA stands for Copper Coated Aluminum. That is junk wire to use for speaker connections. Other brands try to pawn the CCA wire off as the real deal....NOPE!!!! CCA does not carry current like 100% copper. CCA is way LESS conductive too. You don't want that crap. This stuff is a little more difficult to prep. Use a razor knife to split the conductors and a real wire stripper tool to remove the insulation. The right tools make the job easy. Ignore folks who whine the wire it hard to split/trim. I'm happy with this product. ... show more
