  • Hooray! Designs are printed on one side of the perforated page – 37 Charming and Festive Christmas Designs
Format: Paperback
The media could not be loaded. Finally and Hooray! Johanna Basford and her publisher have listened to her fans and printed this beautiful coloring book on one side of the page. Not only that, they have perforated the pages so you can take pages out if you wish to do so. The back of the pages are not neglected either as there is the lightest of gray holiday design patterns. The designs are beautiful and evocative of the holiday season. With everything from Christmas trees to polar bears, ornaments to prancing deer, the designs are instantly recognizable as Ms. Basford's charming style. There are 37 designs which celebrate the Christmas season. Christmas is my favorite holiday and having such a beautiful book of designs to color will help brighten up any dreary, cold days. Not to mention they will be a wonderful way to sit and relax when the holiday season starts becoming more and more hectic. The designs are open and easy to color. This is something that Ms. Basford began in her most recent book (“Magical Jungle”) and I'm pleased to see it once again. It makes it so much easier to use all forms of coloring medium and with the printing on one side, this time it really should be a choice of any coloring book medium. While several designs are set up too appear as two page spreads, only one design actually has elements which spread across two pages (a small garland and a baseboard.) Those elements cross the perforations and spread over the binding. Not a problem as it is so small and each of the pages can easily stand along as a single design. A suggestion for future books might be a fold-out page for the design or two of this nature. That would keep the whole design together and make it that much easier to color. The cover of the book has fold-outs front and back with coloring opportunities on it. I'll be interested to see if the UK version still retains the dust cover as it did with “Magical Jungle”. The attached cover has black line drawings as well as very pretty red, green, and gold foil accents on the front. The cover can be colored, however, it is much smoother in texture than the paper inside the coloring book. The title and presentation pages can be colored as well. I have ordered the UK version of this coloring book. Once it arrives, I will do a comparison of the US versus UK versions. You can look for the comparison in the comments section below. This book is definitely going on my list of family and friend gifts. I can think of several individuals I would love to give it to along with a small set of markers – which we get to use finally with this book. This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring medium I used to test this book and which I generally use for my coloring. 37 – Wonderfully Festive Christmas/Winter Designs by Johanna Basford (this counts the potential two page spreads as separate designs) Printed on one side of the page (did I mention Hooray!!) Paper is heavyweight, ivory, slightly rough and perforated Glue Binding Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page Water-based markers and gel pens leave the slightest of shadows on the back of the page. Gel pens did not bleed through the page but did require a little more drying time. Colored pencils worked well. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with good results. I was able to layer the same color for deeper pigment, layer multiple colors and to blend easily with a pencil style blending stick. ... show more

  • "the paper quality is excellent for colored pencils, markers, and watercolors."
Format: Paperback
"Johanna's Christmas is widely praised for its high-quality, whimsical illustrations, featuring non-religious holiday imagery like gingerbread houses, ornaments, and winter scenes. A standout feature is its single-sided, perforated pages, which allow you to easily remove and frame your finished work. While some users note that the perforation can be delicate and requires care to avoid tearing, the paper quality is excellent for colored pencils, markers, and watercolors. It is a highly recommended, festive choice for adult colorists of all skill levels." ... show more

  • Beautiful Book, fewer illustrations, same great paper stock.
Format: Paperback
I actually purchased Johanna's Christmas after the fact as I am huge fan of her work. This particular book, like all others, is sure to please but a few things are different with the Christmas book. First off there's no "dust cover or jacket" so you do miss out on having one huge image to color, front and back. The next thing that is remarkably different is that the pages themselves are perforated and no images bleed into the binding, big plus score on that. With that in mind there is 1 image per page, making this book significantly "smaller" than all other books. There is a lightly printed graphic on the back of each page which you can most certainly color. These are simple repetitive graphics. The paper is a somewhat off white and of course great heavy stock (I would surmise 100lb stock) that we have all come to love with Johanna's books and artwork. I've been using both Prismacolors as well as Colore' colored pencils (both oil and wax based) and they all work great with this paper. I use various blending methods such as alcohol markers or odorless solvents and the paper stands up to them quite well. The images overall are not as intense or detailed as her other books but lovely none the less. I like the gingerbread house images, there are several, the most overall but there's some other very adorable images and not specific to Christmas but to winter in general. I've been enjoying doing some post Christmas coloring in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone enjoying Johanna's previous work and is a must have for your collection. ... show more

  • Change of Pace from Johanna's Other Books
Format: Paperback
From reading the reviews, I see that some folks aren't crazy about this book because it isn't like Johanna's other books. That's one of the main reasons I love it! I have all of her other coloring books, a journal, a planner and daily calendar. I don't want them all to be the same...that would get really boring very quickly. The paper in this one is great, nice and thick. The pictures are only on one side of the page. If you like to color with markers, that's great. I prefer my Prismacolor pencils for this one. The pages are perforated if you like to display your artwork. This book isn't as detailed as her previous books. I think that's a good idea for the busy Christmas season. I don't have time to color pictures with hundreds and hundreds of leaves! I'm halfway through my third picture since I received the book Tuesday. It's a fun book when you don't have days to complete just one picture. The pictures have enough detail to keep my interest; they in no way resemble kids' coloring book pictures. The picture in the front of the book that appears to be a mounted deer head doesn't bother me. That may be because I live in Southwest Georgia where hunting is the norm. (I don't, but I know many people who do.) Since the pages are perforated, it might be a fun idea to use some colored pages as wrapping paper for small gifts. ... show more
