  • Very nice flute, although I'm not sure how much of it is metal
After purchasing a Jiayouy Bb model and enjoying it, I wanted to also try a C model. I initially skipped this model because I didn't want a metal flute and instead I tried another plastic model from another seller. That one, however, turned out to be significantly inferior, so I returned it and decided to go for this model. After receiving it, I'm not sure how much of it is aluminum and how much is plastic looking like copper plated aluminum. There are definitely some metal parts, but the gourd doesn't seem to be made of metal and I feel like the side pipes are not metal either. Maybe the main pipe is metal, but it might not be. For me, this is not an issue, as I prefer plastic over metal, but YMMV. This flute, like the Bb model, came into a sealed bag, which I always appreciate. The case is the same model as it seems to be provided with other such flutes. Unfortunately, this case had the same hinge defect that I've seen in the other C flute that I returned: the interior material is too tight over the hinge, which makes it more difficult to open. The case is still functional, but I wish it was properly made. Unlike the Bb model, there were no instructions included and the decorative know was not attached already to the flute. None of these are issues, because you can find plenty of instructional information online and the knot is fairly easy to attach as long as you have a little hook to pull the loop through the hole - I just made one from a paper clip. The flute itself looks very nice. I like the markings on the gourd and the pipes look great too. The only criticism I have is that the back of the gourd had a small cluster of fine scratches. One significant difference from my Bb model are the holes on the side pipes. There are holes on both side pipes, allowing you to choose between two drone sounds and they each have a plug on a hinge, which can be used to keep the holes closed. This is both convenient and not so. If you don't plan to open/close a hole during a performance, this is more convenient, but if you do, you'd probably want to start with the respective hole opened and covered with a little finger - the issue here is that the holes are on the side of the pipes, so it's a bit more difficult to posiiion your finger there. As on the other C model that I tried, the distance between the 2nd and 3rd holes of the main pipe is quite close and I find it challenging to cover both holes - especially the 2nd. For this reason, I would not recommend this model to anyone with large fingers. To be fair, the distance is also close between these holes on the Bb model, but it's just a bit longer, which is enough to make a difference for me. I also noticed now that the holes on the Bb model are elongated and not perfectly circular as on this C model - that may also make it easier to cover them. Finally, for some reason, the end of the main pipe does not seem to be plugged as it is on the Bb model - that was also the case with the other C model I tried, so it seems to be the way that C models are constructed. The tone of this flute is nice, as nice as that of my Bb model. I am pleased to see that they are of similar quality and all holes work great. I checked both with a couple of tuners and I discovered that unlike European flutes where their denomination comes from the lower note, these seem to be marked based on what note they give when the top 3 holes (+ the thumb hole) are covered. That's where the C is generated on this flute and the Bb on my other model. After getting some practice with the Bb model, i no longer found this flute difficult to play. Everything worked fine from the start and both side pipes worked great as well. I feel that the side pipe sounds are a bit too loud on this model and I might not enable them as often as on the other flute, but it's nice to have two choices of pitch. As a quick comparison of the Bb and C models: The Bb model is perhaps easier to play and you will find it easier to control the drone due to the positioning of its hole on the shorter pipe. The C model arguably looks nicer, but it may be a bit less comfortable to play due to the 2 close holes that I mentioned earlier. Overall, this is a very nicely made Hulusi flute that plays quite well and looks very good. If you're specifically looking for a C model, this is worth a look. I am happy to have both a C and Bb model, to practice with. ... show more
