  • A surprisingly fine Saxophone for a very affordable price.
Color: Silver Style: Saxophone
Hello, saxophone shopper. I have played he tenor, alto and soprano saxophones since I was in high school from 1968-1971. In those years I have owned Martin, Cannonball, and Selmer saxophones. I actually collect all sorts of musical instruments, many of which I play, some I just enjoy owning as functional art objects. I sold my Selmer MK 7 tenor in 1971 to buy my first cello, which has been my main musical instrument the last 52 years. I gave my last alto saxophone to one of my grandchildren, and I sold my Cannonball Big Stone Raven tenor this year because it was tying up $3500.00 and I didn't have enough time to play it and warrant keeping it. I sold it last year but didn't want to be without any tenor saxophone. I also only wanted a silver finish tenor because I like silver horns more than the more common gold lacquer models. After much careful research, I decided to purchase a Jean Paul Intermediate model tenor from Amazon in their limited edition silver finish. I believe Jean Paul instruments is an American musical instrument company based in Florida, and I believe their band instruments are manufactured in Taiwan. You might want to check that out for accuracy if you care about such things. I have been delightfully surprised by this $1200.00 tenor saxophone. The key work is very smooth and quiet not unlike my beloved 1970 era Selmer Mk 7. Selmer/Paris (the top line Selmers actually hand made in Paris, France) saxophones are probably the most beautiful and coveted saxophones in the world, and my Jean Paul tenor feels much like it in my hands. The sound is excellent, and the horn is very attractive. The bell is lightly engraved, not at the magnificent level of a Paris made Selmer, but those horns cost $10,000 as of this year, out of this amateur musician's ability to own. It is still a very attractive horn, visually, which is important to me. I would certainly recommend the Jean Paul intermediate tenor saxophone for any elementary, junior high or high school band student. Perhaps as an marching band second instrument for a college marching band saxophonist, because many players don't want to expose a $5000.00 - $10,000.00 horn to the rigors and weather of marching band use, even if they are fortunate enough to own one. And for adults who played when in school and are coming back to playing after a multi-decade break but cannot justify spending or afford to spend thousands of dollars on a premium brand like Yamaha, Selmer, Cannonball, et al, he Jean Paul intermediate tenor, and I imagine their alto as well, will serve you well in any application. I have done occasional gigs and played in a Community Symphony band for one year with mine. The price includes a quality mouthpiece, strap, cork grease, and an extremely nice black vinyl, leather like case. I can highly recommend this very affordable, great sounding, great playing and good looking tenor saxophone. Well done, Jean Paul Musical Instruments. I am impressed! Score? 10 on a scale of 10. Highly recommended. Buy with confidence! GCS ... show more

  • Great silver plated tenor sax appearance and sound - wonderful
Color: Silver Style: Saxophone
As an intermediate player getting back into music in my elderly years - I am very appreciative of a company that produces such fine instruments - and customer service. The case is great, the sax - beautiful - the keywork feels superb to me and the sound is great. The mouthpiece it came with and ligature worked great with the supplied reed. I have a lot of work to do to improve my skills but I feel very confident in this instrument and know it will serve me well. Thanks to Jean Paul. I highly recommend this instrument company for anyone seeking a well crafted instrument and a company that has excellent customer service. ... show more

  • Not perfect, but worth every penny
Color: Brass Style: Saxophone
EDITING AFTER 2.5 years of playing and moving up to a professional sax of a different brand. Dropping my review down to 4 stars. The horn has held up nicely and still looks and sounds generally great. This horn plays well, as in, produces a good, clean tone, does not fight you back, and is very responsive. However, the intonation issues on this horn have become more and more apparent. I didn't realize how bad the intonation varies throughout the range of the horn until doing some real testing, and then verifying my thoughts with my new horn. The upper palm key notes are the worst and you better have your listening ears on as you play to keep yourself in tune with the band. I think this horn fits a great use case for the BEGINNING student or learner, or someone wanting to re-test the waters of playing without spending money. But those have to be your primary, if not ONLY drivers. What bothers me most is that with the intonation issues it has, it is NOT an "intermediate" horn. That advertising term is very vague, but if someone is trying to become a BETTER player, I would strongly advise getting a more proper sax and unfortutely this sax proves that you get what you pay for. I now know that this sax held me back from achieving my best. That's not to say it fits the use case very well, just be careful about your expectations. Worth every penny for sure. At this price it is still an amazing product to learn on or test the waters. They just should call it a student/beginner sax. --------ORIGINAL----------- I bought this as a low cost way to get back into playing the saxophone after having sold my Yanigisawa years ago. I have a lot of experience from my younger days. I had expectations of a good sounding, fun playing horn, but NOT a pro quality horn. WHAT WAS NOT SO GOOD: - The G# adjuster needed a tiny adjustment to close perfect - The front F key had a bit of longitudinal play... slop... causing it to wobble off its axis and then bump one of the palm keys off its pad seat. I was able to swage that tighter. - Both of those nitpicks ... if bumped the wrong way... would cause the horn to almost completely stop responding. I was able to fix them both on my own and now the horn plays perfect, BUT a beginner might have troubles and fight the horn a bit if you run into difficulties like this. - The mouthpiece... well, it is a very low end piece and I went straight to a different one than what came with it. - The neckstrap... throw that away. I wouldn't trust it AT ALL to support the horn with the cheap plastic clasp. WHAT WAS REALLY GOOD: - The price. Seriously... $700 for a tenor sax?!?! - The looks. Top notch finish. Will it stand the test of time? Who knows, but out of the box it is perfect. - The case. Very nice, secure case. - The action. I played a Yanigisawa tenor for years and always loved its firm action. This horn feels just like I remember a sax should feel like. Everything is solid, firm, and responsive. Overall thoughts: - Be willing to have to take a little bit of time to perhaps tweak any final adjustments or even have someone help you if need be. - Plan to spend another hundred or so on a good mouthpiece. I tried a Vandoren V16 T-7 and it sounded great. I moved to my personal favorite, an Otto Link "New STM" 7 and it is wonderful. - Plan to spend a little bit more on a decent neck strap, maybe a better cleaning swab, and of course some good reeds. - Be willing to accept that this isn't a multi-thousand dollar horn and it MAY not last like one. It might though. - If you have the right expectations then this horn... again for the money... is an incredible deal. Even with the few little nitpicks I had about it, I have to rate it a solid 5 star purchase. I would recommend any beginner or developing student strongly consider this before either plunking down thousands of dollars more, or even worse, spending years struggling with a poor, busted up school loaner horn because you can't afford, or have reservations about spending more on such a large investment. ... show more

  • Jean Paul Tenor Saxophone TS-400.
Color: Brass Style: Saxophone
Beautiful Tenor Saxophone, from Jean-Paul. Great sound, great value. Very impressed. You won't be sorry! Unfortunately, I had to return mine only because it was too heavy. I am too old!
