I have a bad back from sports so I have been sleeping in a recliner, which honestly hasn't really been helping me sleep well. So I started looking into Japanese floor mattresses. I found that shikibuton's (what are usually referred to as futons) are very helpful for back pain. I wanted to makes sure I got a Japanese made futon with a good mix of cotton and foam and this one is great! At 4-inches thick, it's very plush and comfortable. It’s not quite cushy enough to be used on bare floor, so I highly recommend getting a tatami mat to add airflow and comfort. It’s like sleeping on a 4-inch thick marshmallow. I purchased a proper rush grass tatami mat for underneath the futon and I can say this is the best I've slept in years. Fair warning, there is a bit of care involved. You have to put it out in the sun every week or so or you'll get mildew growth in the cotton layer. It just needs 10-15 min of direct sunlight on the porch. All cotton-based futons require this, but I thought it important to mention. Overall, I'm thrilled with this futon!

I really like this futon mattress, especially because it’s 100% cotton—both the filling and the outer fabric. That’s actually pretty hard to find, and it was the main reason I chose this one. It feels natural, breathable, and well made compared to many futons that mix in foam or synthetic materials. The comfort level is great for what it’s designed for. I’ve used it for overnight guests and everyone has said it was comfortable to sleep on. The extra thickness helps a lot, and it feels like a legitimate Japanese-style futon rather than a thin pad. It folds and stores easily too, which makes it perfect for flexible sleeping setups. I’m planning to keep it as part of our tiny house setup for visiting guests, and it works really well for that purpose. The only downside is the sizing. Although it’s listed as Twin XL, it’s really more of a twin-ish size, which makes finding and fitting sheets a bit tricky. Standard sheets don’t fit quite the way you’d expect, so it may take a little experimenting to find bedding that works well. Overall though, if you want a real cotton Japanese-style futon that’s comfortable, breathable, and easy to store, this is a great option—especially for guest sleeping arrangements or small living spaces.

Description of item as 100% cotton is inaccurate- it is actually made out of a polyester-cotton blend. In addition, this item should be used with a mat or on carpet. It is not thick enough to be used on a hardwood floor.

I am impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of this futon. It is very comfortable, and I have been sleeping well on it. It is true to size (I bought a twin). I bought a cover from Fuli that fits it perfectly, which now completes my made in Japan bedding. For the price it is a good deal. I had tried another futon that was cheaper but it was made in China and the difference in comfort between the two is night and day. I am glad to pay more for this Japanese futon knowing the materials and durability are much better.

It could be awesome but the materials are lack luster. It’s NOT 100% Cotton. It’s NOT 3” thick. Just starting with that. Doesn’t work on hard floors or tatami mats. This is a waste of money. Get a real Shikibuton. This is a cash grab. I recommend by passing Amazon and looking at J Life International, or other small brands for the actual experience.

I’m not an expert on Japanese mattresses, but I have lived on this style of futon for over a year before, so I had a sense of what to expect. This one has some real strengths: it’s thinner, lighter, and more foldable than many others, which makes it easy to move and store. That said, I learned pretty quickly that four inches of loose batting just isn’t enough support for my very American body. I need a denser core—something with more structure, like a firm foam layer—to sleep comfortably through the night. A tatami mat underneath might help, but I suspect I simply need more padding overall. For what it is, though, this futon is still great. It’s perfect for guests, movie nights, gaming on the floor, or stretching out with a book. And if I ever decide to commit to a more minimalist, spine-focused lifestyle, I can see this fitting right in. Overall, it’s a well‑made product and probably worth the price—it just isn’t the right long‑term sleeping surface for me.
