Features

  • Contains a plastic bag of 3.52 ounce Bonito flakes (jikabiyaki honkatsu)
  • Could be used as a base stock for soups and broths
  • Product of Japan

Description

3.3 ounces. (100 gram) bag. Although bonito is one of the most important fish in Japanese cuisine, it is rarely eaten as the entre of a meal. Instead, the dark, oily fish is carefully dried and shaved into very fine, intensely flavored flakes known as katsobushi. These salty flakes are combined with kombu seaweed to make dashi, the base stock for most Japanese soups and broths. Dashi is present in so many Japanese foods that the cuisine would hardly be the same without it. The strong, clean fish flavor of katsobushi makes it a wonderful seasoning for wakame seaweed salads, for seasoning chilled tofu, and for sprinkling over steamed or sauted vegetables.

  • HAPPY CATS..HAPPY PEOPLE..HAPPY SALES!!!
These Bonito Flakes are absolutely delicious and both my cat and I snack on them right out-of-the-bag every day! They arrived in perfect condition (large thin flakes that have a very fresh scent, proving the flesh was sliced when it was firm and just-caught). I have decades of experience with canning, smoking, freezing, and preparing dishes with West Coast albacore tuna, which is akin to bonito. I was privileged in the 1970's to cook for the 2-man crew of a unique schooner/troller that was set up to long-line these fast and spectacular fish 200mi. off the Pacific coast. That fish was gutted and cleaned right on deck and put in the hold to quickly chill it. The resulting product when fish are respected in this way tastes and smells nothing like "commercial" store-bought tuna. (The closest thing I've found is Costco's Kirkland brand.) These flakes are the "real deal" and make wonderful broth, soups and many other Asian and Polynesian dishes. Just melting a few yummy flakes on my tongue gives me an immediate protein rush when I come in out of the extreme cold weather we've had in the GA Mtns. (of all places) and my comical cat races up&down and all-around with each snack. I do have one caveat though: If you are spoiled w/ Amazon Prime like me, do order early and give it an extra week to arrive. This is a bargain @$8.29 w/Free Shipping if you are isolated away from the luxury of specialty stores, etc.. Also, just so you know, I trust Japanese food products and would not have bought this product from another foreign country. HAPPY CATS!..HAPPY PEOPLE!..HAPPY SALES! ... show more

  • Neko Atsume
I got these for my cat after playing Neko Atsume. Like, I am leaving fake bonito flakes out to lure fake cats into my yard in that game, but I haven’t given them to my real cat yet? I’m lucky she still loves me. She recently switched to a prescription diet, and some of the flavors are not as palatable as others. A sprinkle of Bonito flakes, and she eats every bite. 10 out of 10 recommend for fake and real cats alike. ... show more

  • Great for Kitties!
Sometimes my Kitty turns up his nose at some flavors of wet food. With costs increased as much as 30%, I really can't afford for him to be so wasteful. A pinch of flakes on top has been great at stimulating his appetite and getting him to finish his food. This is a great package size; large enough to last a few months, but not so large you need to figure out storage solutions. (I did transfer contents to an airtight container, as I live in a humid climate.) For multiple kitties the 1lb packages may make more sense. Mostly large flakes, but I do see a bit of powdery bits. Bits on wet food aren't so much an issue for the Kitty, but I think generally that's considered a concern for people who cook with bonito flakes. I have a piece here and there on occasion. It tastes like a fishy bacon. A little salty, smoky, very umami. Not something my palate is accustomed to, but I didn't buy it for myself! ... show more

  • Excellent Quality At A Good Price.
This bag of Japanese Bonito Flakes is enormous, although light as air. I ordered two bags, not expecting that the bags would be quite so large. However, this is a very good quality of Bonito Flakes, and they will all be used and enjoyed. This brand delivers a very finely-shaven quality of dried Bonito. Both of my packages were filled with large shavings, there was practically no breakage, and there was hardly any flake "dust" in either of the two sacks. The smell is exactly as it should be, highly pungent, highly fishy, very stinky. This is one of the two building blocks of much Japanese cuisine, the other being Kombu, a form of sea Kelp. When these Bonito Flakes and the Kombu are used together, they form a lovely and rich stock which is the base for Miso Soup, and so very many other Japanese dishes. This product is a lovely quality and I recommend it. ... show more

  • Cats love this as a food topper if they need encouragement to eat
This bulk bag is a great value compared to the smaller bags. I just divide it into smaller bags, toss them all in the freezer, and take out one smaller bag at a time as needed. Sometimes my cats need encouragement to finish their canned food, and a little of this tuna as a topper does the trick.

  • Mascara's Morning Treat!
My cat Mascara ADORES these! We give them to her every morning, She doesn't like them when we get to the very bottom and they are no longer fluffy (much like potato chips in the bottom of the bag). So, I put the crumbs in her dry food, and order her another bag. She's been eating these for about 4 years and has never turned them down (expect the crumbs from the bottom of the bag). I feel they are good nutrition for her. They are loved by the Japanese people and they use them for bases in soups and broth and as a topping on various dishes. This bag lasts a long time, I buy about 3-4 a year. A great, healthy, cat treat! Just fish and seaweed. ... show more

  • It is Benito flakes but posting misleading size
Bonito flakes, fresh and tasty but size on listing indicates 3.5 ounces; received 2.82 ounces, 80 gram bag instead. Would buy again, good brand, quality and taste.
