Now that I have these lights installed as Christmas decoration spotlights in front of my house, they are bright but not TOO bright and illuminate our decorated unlighted front doorway very well. Took me a hot minute to figure out how to attach the ground stakes before I realized that the attaching screw was screwed into the top of the stake and not in a separate package (no instructions). My only caveat is that the metal housing that holds the lights is very soft and bendable, which I found out the hard way when trying to push them into the ground after installing the stakes. I was able to bend them back into some semblance of their original shape, but they're a little crooked--fortunately light travels in a straight line so you never notice this after dark when the lights are on. They've already survived one heavy snowfall and a rainstorm shortly after. I have them on an inexpensive outdoor timer that regulates on/off times, which provides set-up-and-forget-it operation. I recommend installing them by pushing on the top of the ground stake instead of on the light itself, which is what I finally did to prevent the bending. I got these to provide lighting in a small area in our yard where we are growing a few strawberries and vegetables. Earwigs have been destroying our plants (we had to remove and replace three plants in the first week) so I went looking for solutions. One was small plastic bowls buried up to their lids w/holes in the lids, filled them w/soy sauce and vegetable oil. Earwigs are attracted to the smell of the soy sauce and drown in the oil. The other is light - they are noturnal feeders and avoid light. So, I set up two of these lights over my mini-garden, and put them on a SmartThings plug set to turn on at night, turn off in the morning. Works perfectly, the soy sauce/oil pots significantly reduced earwig damage, and since the lights we are essentially earwig-free (and bug-free in general) on the plants. The lights are smaller than expected, the official pics make them look bigger than they are, but they do a good job and provide plenty of light, and I'm actually happy they are small as that makes them less obtrusive. Mounting them to the short section of an outdoor shower was a simple matter of removing the nut that holds the light to the stake, then removing the piece that holds the light, screwing that to the board, and re-attaching the light. So these are OK for targeted placement where you have power, but would not work (at least for most people) to provide lighting along a walkway, or across a garden, unless you've run a lot of power points. And I really don't want a bunch of 120v connections all over the place outside, risk of damage to them, kids mucking with them, etc. For that I'd use low-power lighting fixtures. I'd prefer a pure white glow instead. Regardless, they're much brighter than the 400 lumens stated. The stake is metallic which is a nice added touch. You actually don't need the tool included to adjust the base as it will go up and down freely on its own. However, a 360 degree adjustable base would have been preferred. Many of you will have to purchase separate light dampening sheets to soften the glow. Granted you can be creative and use wax paper or various forms of light penetrating cloths cutting holes appropriately. The light angles out way too far on both sides like a flood light to use it effectively for lighting up discreet Halloween or Christmas decorations. It's not even good to light up a simple sign in your yard. It's overkill in the lighting dept. I would never refer to them as accent lights. They're just not that practical for various other uses other then security lights in the back yard. ... show more

This purchase was to add a fourth light, so clearly I have had success with these. One I had to replace because I had positioned it with the light pointing straight up. It stopped working apparently because it got wet. My solution for the replacement was to place a piece of glass a few inches above the light to keep the rain off it. So far, so good. I have not had a problem with the others, which are pointed diagonally. The light color is warm; perfect for illuminating garden features.
