Top Amazon Reviews

  • Don't let the price fool you
I ordered the Jazzmaster type semi-hollow recently, and wanted to share my experience. I didn't plan to get this, I was looking for something else and Amazon's lovely ad machine did me a favor, showing me some things I might be interested in. By did they. I've been in the market for a P90 guitar for little while, but I haven't been actively looking. At first, based on the body shape, I didn't give this one a second look, but after I saw a larger photo, the pickups caught my eye. They didn't look like Jazzmaster pickups, so I clicked and took a closer look. After going through the images and zooming in on some of the details, I noticed the pickups actually look like P90s. They have adjustable pole pieces throughout, which the Jazzmaster pickups don't have, and so I went down to the reviews. I read a few, all of which were good, and did a quick google search. I found other reviews, I have a few trusted sources for Guitar info that I wanted to check, and all I heard were surprises at the quality and playability of the IYV brand. The reviews for this specific model said that it's heavy for a semi-hollow, and that the pickups do sound more like P90s than Jazzmasters, so I decided to order myself one. It was $144 and some change on Cyber Monday, so I really couldn't lose. I figured if I didn't like certain things, I could replace as needed and end up with a great instrument either way. The order was placed, and arrived a couple days later. The umboxing was uneventful, it arrived in just the bare box from the factory. I've ordered an Epiphone LP and a Gretsch Bass for delivere, and both had come inside a bigger box, so this worried me at first. However, after opening the box, everything was well packed in Styrofoam and in tact. This guitar is indeed a little heavier than I'd expect for a semi-hollow, but after I felt around inside the F-hole, I realized why. The hole is routed out of a solid body. This is not an issue, but I wanted to point it out in case anyone is curious. At this price point, I would not expect to get an ES-355-type body, and I didn't buy this for the semi-hollow, so I moved on. The hardware was all in tact, there were no nicks or dings in the finish, and in general the guitar looks really good. The finish is consistent and clean, and I haven't found any missed spots. I grabbed a strap I had laying around and got ready to try it out. It took a few minutes to tune the strings, and as they're new they needed a little stretching, but once I got them in tune they seemed to stay that way. The first thing I thought I would want to replace on this guitar was the tuners, but so far, they seem solid. I couldn't tell you at this point what they're on par with, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to need to replace them right away either. The whammy bar is what I'd expect, just about the same shape as a Strat, but as you can see in the images, it's the kind of system that's half behind the plate the bar sticks into. I forget which Fender it started on, but it's what I'd expect on this shape body. It works well, sounds more like a Bigsby than a Floud Rose. I leave the bar off most of the time while I'm playing. That leads me into the next part, which is the cable jack. If you plug a cable in that's not L-shaped, the whammy bar will the cable when you rotate it downward OK if I'm using it, but as I don't use it much anyway I just leave it out. My main guitar is a hard tail, this one can be too. Now, on to the good stuff. The reason I grabbed this was the pickups. The output's solid, this is louder with the same settings on the same amp as the Les Paul or Dinky I play most of the time. I get a bit of noise from the hum, but that's to be expected, and it's almost gone when in the middle position. They sound great with high gain, and clean up well when I turn the volume down. The pots work well, the volume knob works as more than just an on-off switch, and the tone has geed range. I get good clarity, and I can hear all the strings whether I crank it or turn the volume down to where I can barely heard them at all. The electronics work properly, the rhythm circuit does have a darker sound and its independent controls function as expected. I haven't spent much time there, I generally stick to the back pickup. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Time will tell if I leave it as-is or replace parts, but for now it's staying stock. It didn't need a setup out of the box, the action is low, and there's no buzz anywhere. All frets appear to be in good shape, I see no reason I'd need to put any additional money into the guitar at this time. It's very playable and sounds great. I will be looking at other IYV models in the future, I'm very glad I gave this a chance. I will update this review if anything changes. ... show more

  • Great value and great guitar, but you need to put in some work to get it to play nice...
This guitar is quite nice, it looks and almost plays like a Jazzmaster... BUT... you need to be aware of the work that you need to put in to make it fully playable... While the price would suggest that you could get this for a beginner... "as is" it would deter a new player, here is why and what I had to do: Action - Came in quite high which nakes the guitar hard to play. I had to Shim the neck in order to lower it. Easy fix with some folder pieces of paper. Frets - Slight fret sprout on both the low and high sides of the neck feel rough on the hand, non-polished frets feel very gritty while trying to bend. I polished the frets while I had the neck off the body for the shim, and filed the sides of the neck to mostly smooth out the sprout... easy, but just takes time/patience. It also smoothed out the fingerboard edges. Dry Fingerboard - Looked like the fingerboard was never treated, so it looked "pale" and gritty while fretting. I rubbed some Boiled Linseed Oil on it and it came out looking way nicer and now feels smooth. Tun-o-matic style bridge was not properly secured (loose screws), tightened (using suplpied tools) and checked the intonation, all OK. There were some buffing compound left over, easy to clean up, the upper circuitry pots are not smooth the whole travel, which I have not addressed yet, need to take the pickguard off for that... but they are in working order, not scratchiness. The trem works, thought the bar is not as tight as it could be, so there is some wiggle in it, but not enough to impair usage. I threw in a fresh set of strings (it comes with 9's) and now it plays really nice... I give 4 stars, because without work, it is not really playable, once all those easy fixes are in is a much nicer and pleasant playing experience... the key is, having the time/patience/knowledge to make the necessary adjustments... which, BTW, you also have to do to some of the big brands... just to a lesser degree... After all that... I am quite happy with this guitar, it is my 2nd IYV... so I knew what I was getting into... If you buy it and even adding a pro setup at your local guitar shop, you may still come out with a nice guitar and a not high at all cost... my 2 cents... I was too excited to start working on it, I forgot to take before and after pics... ... show more
