  • Good, but far from perfect. Horrible strings.
So here is the DL on this. I had to buy two of these to get a good one. The first one arrived with the G string completely slack, which that's not unusual, but the problem was it could not be tuned up. The strings twisted around inside the ferrule. I pulled the saddle off of the body and looked at it. Well, there is supposed to be a little post or perhaps a screw that keeps that whole thing from turning. Well it wasn't there! Additionally the strings on it were completely crap, which I fully expected but not to this level which I'll get to. I have requested a return because this thing is unplayable garbage. This really surprised me because I have a seven string IYV that I bought a few months ago that is just phenomenal! I was really disappointed! Honestly I think this was returned, and no one took the time to inspect it. It had signs of use on it. So Amazon sent me a second one out, and it arrived in two days which was great! This one seemed to have all of the parts on the tuners necessary. Here's the first thing you need to know about both of these. The strings on this are completely unacceptable. Don't get me wrong I usually replace strings anyway because they're usually Chinese garbage. Both of these basses the strings for the most part couldn't be tuned. What I mean is that three strings on the first one, and three strings on the second one when you tried to tune them up, they just kept dropping in pitch. That seems very strange, but what was happening is the strings were unwinding at the nut, so you could literally grab it, pull on it and it would just uncoil. Garbage. Lucky for me I had a brand new set of Rotosounds for it. I didn't have any problem after that. Well one small problem but it was user error. I have never owned a headless like this, so the one thing I figured out is that you have to roll the threaded tuner ferrule back enough to make sure adjustment and don't run out of thread.. Basically what I mean is that before you string it, roll it back to where you have about a half an inch of thread showing. Then you can tune it all the way up. Initial impressions are pretty decent. Action is a little high at the high end, but there's a visible bow in the neck which means the truss rod needs to be adjusted. That's no big deal. Normal. The saddle themselves are little threaded brass pieces that thread down into the individual bridge parts. You spin them up or down to get the height correct. A little weird to me, but it does work, and it's pretty easy to do. One thing I was pretty happy about is the preamp and this is pretty decent. And it has plenty of output and good adjustability although I do not like how the controls are set up. They are contrary to everything that I own. If there's enough slack in the wires I will probably take it apart and move them around to my liking, or extend them if I have to. Being a headless, ZERO neck dive. I like that. Is it worth buying? Well I got it on special and I paid $200 for it. It's definitely worth $200. But don't think you're just gonna pull this thing out of the box and tune it up and it's gonna be great.. it will take some initial struggles to get it going. Don't even try to use the strings that are on it. Take the included Allen wrench, back the screws off, pull the strings out out of the ferrules and throw them in the garbage. ... show more

  • Fancy 5 string without the fancy price
I play 4 string but wanted a 5 to mess around with some prog metal songs on, have always wanted a super cool headless, so for well under 3 Benjamins I decided it was worth taking a chance on. No regrets. Mine is Vietnam-made and the fundamentals are all there. The active pickup system is fine and less touchy about battery voltage than the old Fishman in my Parker, works fine with the USB rechargeable NiMh "9V" that run closer to 8.4V. I'm no golden ear purist but the tone is fine enough for me and the pots aren't rough or noisy. Finish is "ok". It's even and consistent but you can tell they don't mask off and touch up as well as the more expensive brand names, there's overspray in the truss rod cutout and it looks a bit rough. Leftover buffing compound in nooks and crannies as I expect for an inexpensive guitar finish. At this price point it's totally acceptable and not much work to do the final finishing. Tuners are alright, and just a thrust/roller bearing away from being good. They use standard ball bearings which don't really function as anything more than spacers when used for an axial load like this, which makes them pretty crunchy and rough even with a bit of wax to lube em up. They do hold tune pretty well despite feeling unpleasant, and the system design seems fine to me. Fretwork is good, no loose/lifting or sharp edged frets. Fretboard was dry as a bone but a little oil resolved that easily and it looks great. Overall a great guitar and I wouldn't be disappointed even at a more midrange price point. Better fit and finish than my Ibanez Gio 7 string. ... show more

  • Beautiful but problematic
The media could not be loaded. Absolutely beautiful bass guitar and super aesthetically great. But..... The action is very high and there's really no way to adjust it. If you adjust the truss rod too tight the strings buzz if you go too loose the action is crazy high. Very sad because it is a beautiful great feeling bass. ... show more
