  • Unbelievable quality in build, sound, set up, appearance and add an alarming price point
I will admit that I had my reservations prior to ordering this instrument. In fact, I have determined even before arrival that I would probably be returning it because it’s hard to believe that I won $163 instrument could be anything but a beginners nightmare as are most expensive instruments. What caught my eye initially? Was it similarity to a Sire Marcus Miller Base that I have been admiring and considering as a back up instrument (my primary instrument is a fire, Marcus Miller, M5 that I love dearly). I decided to look online at reviews and forms to see what other bass players might have to say about this instrument and was surprised to see so many positive reviews so I pulled the trigger and ordered it (still with the idea that I would be returning it). Boy, I couldn’t be more wrong!!! Right out of the box, this thing is beautiful, the finish is amazing, it is visually very pretty and well done. The neck came perfectly straight, the intonation and set up were both perfect, And the set up was actually perfect for my playing style. The sound is actually more variable than any bass that I have ever owned or played in the pick up selector actually allows you to blend the pick ups better than any bass that I have ever owned or played. Seriously I’m not kidding. I am amazed with this instrument I’ve had it for three weeks now allowing it to become acclimated in to Florida’s overly humid and warm environment with no noticeable changes whatsoever in set up. I would strongly recommend this instrument to any beginner looking to learn how to play bass. You can spend your money on the big namebrand in the beginning category if you want, but this instrument plays and sounds much better than anything I’ve seen in storage for a long long time. Appearance wise, Play a Play ability, quality, and sound wise I would have to spend at least five times more to equal what this instrument provides right out of the box at $163. Although I purchase the instrument to be a back up to my primary base, I will be walking onto the stage with it at my next performance engagement. I’ve already performed a sound test with it in the environment that it will be used and it sounds amazing. ... show more

  • Good value for a frugal semi-professional. Good value for a frugal semi-professional.
First of all, I favor cheap basses. For me, cheap is a $360 Squier 70's classic vibe limited edition. When I play those side by side with MIM or American made Fenders, I can't justify justify paying 3 times the price, for the same design. 99% of the sound and feel comes from your fingers and brain. So when I needed a backup 5 string (my main fiver is a Brice Freakout I bought used for $399), and saw this for $190, I was intrigued. It's got that Fender aerodyne vibe with sharp edges and the arm bevel and belly cut. I read every review and they were mostly positive, so I thought I'd take the chance on a purchase and return it if it wasn't serviceable. It showed up with minimal packaging, just the triangular inner carton, but was miraculously unscathed in the shipping process. It had quite a bit of fret buzz, the neck was misaligned with a gap on the low side, it was not intonated, it had notable fret sprout - sharp edges on many frets on both sides of the board, and an inadequate string break angle above the nut on the E and A strings . I went to work on it, and about 2 hours later I had minimal buzz, a tighter neck joint, perfect intonation, and smooth fret ends. It sounds good. It feels pretty good. It's lighter than I anticipated based on the other reviews - feels about the same as a 4 string Squier P bass to me. I ordered a hipshot string retainer for the headstock to hold down all but the low B, and I'll ditch the factory disc version on the D and G string. Others mentioned that the pickups appear to be sized for a 4 string. I measured them against my Squiers and that does seem to be the case. However, I don't notice any inconsistency in volume across the strings like another reviewer mentioned. I also noticed that the pickups appear to be installed a bit crookedly in the cavities, and the J pickup at the bridge is not rising when I back off the screws, so it propbably needs more foam underneath it. I'll investigate these issues later, but they don't seem to affect the sound. I play about 50 shows a year in several bands - classic rock, modern rock/pop, country - mostly at wineries and parks concerts, so reliability is important to me. I'll try this instrument at a rehearsal this week, and if all is well after a few hours of playing with a band, I'll probably keep it. All in all, if you do your own setups and adjustments and you're a bargain hunter like me, this bass seems like a decent value. ... show more

  • This is an amazing bass for the price!
As someone that spends a tremeandous amount of time playing guitar and bass, I'm having a hard time finding much wrong with this bass at this price point. I've paid 2x and sometimes 3x for basses that were inferior to this one (looking at you "Dean"). Is it comparable to a Fender American Ultra Jazz bass V? No. Is it as good as a Squier 5 string? I think it's as good, if not better. And it's $300 cheaper. Are there imperfections? Sure, but very minor. I have a small amount of buzz between the nut and 5th fret. That's a pretty minor neck adjustment. The nut could probably be reduced down a bit to be more flush with the neck edge. The 3rd and 4th knob seem slightly "grainy" but it doesn't seem to affect their performance. As far as the build, It's all maple and it's hefty! It's significantly heavier than my Fender P-Bass. It has active pickups (9v battery not provided) and has a switch to run Passive, as one would expect. I ran it through a Mark Bass Amp and it sounded...... really good! I certainly didn't hate it. As far as how it looks..... It's strikingly beautiful with a honey burst finish. The fret inlays and binding are gorgeous. I suspect they're made out of some synthetic material but I can't tell the difference. The machine heads and other hardware seem to be very solid. If you want to make it into a Pro instrument, I would probably put EMG's in it and change out the pots. Overall, this is a fantastic 5 string Jazz bass at an almost unbelievable price. ... show more

  • Is this really a $200 bass?
Wow, this bass is an incredible value! It is built very well with very minor, and i mean minor, finish flaws that in no way affect the playability of the instrument. The sound is clean and mid driven with some good high end as well. Definitely not your bartolinis or aguilars, but playing through an amp or PA, no one is going to tell. The bass feels smooth in the hands. The neck is ROASTED maple and it looks amazing with the abalone inlays. Had a nice weight to it also. Do yourself a favor, if you are in the market for a backup or just starting out, get this instrument. You will not regret it! ... show more

  • Looks good, plays good and sounds good. Looks good, plays good and sounds good.
Very nice bass. For the price paid, this bass feels premium. Right out the box I was shocked that it was in tune. Not perfectly but in tune enough to play an octave disco pattern. Neck feels good, very playable. Body had the weight I wanted. Flawless finish. Electronics sounds decent. The bass on the pre-amp was deep enough for me. Passive/Active switch is a plus. Contrary to other reviews I find the string spacing to be 16-mm (really narrow) instead of the 18 or 19-mm mentioned. Be mindful of this when upgrading the bridge. Also the bass looks more like the Marcus Miller Sire V10, Not the P10. The only difference is the pickup configuration: IYV IPJB = Jazz + Precision, Sir V10 = Jazz + Jazz. The only mods that I’ll do are: 1 Replace the bridge (Silver) 2 Add an addition round string tree or a four position tree. 3 Replace the nut with bone or graphite. looks like high stress over the nut with the string trees. 4 The tuners (silver) Other wise, very satisfied with this bass. No buyers remorse hear. Will add photos after mods. ... show more

  • A cool functional bass for less than $200? No way!!!
When I saw this guitar on Amazon, I thought it must be too good to be true. A 5 string jazz with active pre amp and PJ pickups for less than $200. That's crazy. After watching a few reviews, I decided to give it a try. I ordered it and 2 days later it showed up on my doorstep. At first, I wasn't impressed at all by the packaging. There wasn't much protecting the guitar from the shipping demons. I opened the box and unwrapped the guitar, checking it for shipping damage. Luckily there was none. I took a long look at the guitar and thought it was rather sexy. The roasted maple neck and inlays looked good. The finish was nice and I was excited to see how it sounded. It didn't come with a 9volt battery, so after putting one in it I tuned it up and played it. It wasn't but a 1/2 out of tune. As I was playing it, I noticed a buzz at the first fret. Looking down the neck, I saw the neck needed a bit of adjustment. Using the Allen wrench provided, I turned the trussrod counterclockwise 1/4 turn. No more buzz. I retuned and started to play. I was impressed by the sound of the guitar. I determined it had volume, blend, bass, mid and treble knobs and a kill switch. I didn't hear much of a difference when blending the pickups. The eq preamp section worked well, but wasn't as responsive as other preamps. Still it played, sounded, looked very nice. I not a guitar player, I am a bass player. Comparing it to some of my other basses, (some 10 times the price), I really enjoyed it's playable neck and punchy sound. It held tune and was comfortable to play. No neck drive. If you are looking for a solid bass you can give with or to have in the studio, I'd recommend it. If you are a gear head like me, it is a perfect platform to start your modification project on. Definitely change the strings first, but after that enjoy your new bass. I've already started thinking about what pickups I want to drop in it, but that's just me. ... show more

  • A Pro-Level Active 5-string Bass for a price less than many cases… For real!
I’ve owned three 4-string basses for decades (Fender, Gibson, Alembic) but was curious about the advantages of a 5 string bass & didn’t want to lose a lot of money if it wasn’t for me. I already bought 3 different IYV guitars on Amazon, so I had no reservations about buying this bass. The fit and finish on this bass is the best among my 4 IYVs — much better than you’d expect from a sub-$200 bass (or even one costing more than twice as much) The setup out of the box was fine and Treble/Mid/Bass knobs in the active tone circuit work well and cover a lot of ground. While the stock (.045-.130) strings are fine, I swapped them out for pure nickel D’Addario Half-Rounds. The low B string would not fully seat into the bridge until I used a 3/16” bit in a hand drill to expand the string opening in the bridge (and used the old string as a file to smooth any burrs). That solved the issue. The tuners & bridge saddles moved smoothly, allowing me to accurately intonation the new strings. At 10.12 lbs, this is the heaviest instrument I own (so I’d recommend a 3.5” wide strap, if you don’t already have one). I guess it’s not unusual for 5-string basses to weigh more than their 4-string counterparts and it feels fine to play standing up. But the weight still surprises me when I first pick it up. I bought a GearLux hard shell bass case for it and was relieved to find that this bass fits it perfectly, having the same dimensions as a Fender Jazz Bass. While I haven’t gigged in many years, I would have no problem using this bass on a job. It’s also a good choice for anyone lacking a bass for multitrack home recording. The biggest surprise is that there’s no negative surprises with this bass. ... show more

  • Plays well but has some issues
Instrument was packaged in a single cardboard box, wrapped in a thin foam bag with a few pieces of foam around it. Some areas where knobs had pushed through the box. Arrived with some dings to the side of the fretboard but not the worst. Better packaging would easily prevent this. Finish of the instrument was alright, although a little rough around some edges. Most of the inlays looked alright, although one had a different tone to it than the others. The neck felt nice, almost like it needed a little more sanding. The bass played well and I didn't change the factory setup, just tuned and felt it played pretty well. Spacing was pretty comfortable and action was pretty low. Electronics are the definite low point of this bass. The neck P pickup is a 4 string pickup and has a bit of an unbalanced sound to it. The bridge J pickup sounds alright although I am suspicious of whether it is actually a 5 string pickup. The bass has a push pull volume for switching between the active and passive mode. Passive was very quiet and active decently louder. The bass has a blend knob for selecting pickups, as well as a treble, mid, and bass boost/cut. All pots have center points aside from the volume. They felt alright, a little scratchy. A little bit of noise with the electronics, although they were serviceable. While the bass played well and has mod potential, it is greatly reduced by its pickups. If it were to just have two 5 string j pickups it'd be great. I felt that attempting to install anything else would be too much of a headache and ended up returning it. Although I am returning the instrument and going with a different bass, I would still try other iyv instruments. It did play well and is a good value for the price. Mainly just some design flaws that fixing would be too difficult. If you're up to the challenge or able to live with the electronics, maybe this bass is for you ... show more
