  • Serious let down
I bought this to use with the Geissele reaction rod. The clamping force was not enough to hold on to the rod beyond 35 ft lbs. The jaws opened up and the rod slipped. The jaws on this vise are painted, non-textured, so they don't hold very securely. In desperation, I cranked down the jaws hard to keep the rod from slipping, but I ended up stripping the threads. I'm not giving this 1 star because I used it beyond its mechanical ability and it failed, I'm giving it 1 star because of the pot metal used in the screw and the rod used to turn the screw. Also, because not only are the jaws not textured, they're painted or powder coated, making them slippery to begin with. I expected better from Irwin, but just like they screwed up Vise Grips, they screwed this up too. ... show more

  • Get a Grip, Irwin will help
I bought two and use them with two sets of Nylon Multipurpose Vise Jaws to do amateur gun smithing, for example, putting on sights, and simply having an extra set of hands. They fit on my Seville Classics UltraGraphite Commercial Work Bench fine. I used some felt pads to protect the wood of the bench. They do hold tight to the "bench." They are inexpensive but would have value at twice the cost. I am likely to buy a more traditional Irwin vise in the future. ... show more

  • Great little vise
IRWIN Clamp-On Vise, 3", 226303 I bought it for my wooden ship modeling hobby. With 3" wide jaws, it's perfect for holding wood or metal for planing or cutting for my hobby. It also has a small casting in the jaws for holding small pipe or dowels horizontally. The screw turns easily, especially after adding 3-In-1 oil to the threads. I use a wooden solid-core door for my hobby table top, and it clamps on firmly and easily...no movement at all once you clamp it down. Appears to be well made. It's solid cast iron and feels hefty but is light enough to easily move around the table with one hand. Don't confuse this with the bigger and heavier machine vises, because it's not that. But it is absolutely perfect for what I use it for. This is one of my better purchases and would not hesitate at all to buy again. I also bought as an accessory the BENCH WIZARD 3 Inch Magnetic Aluminum Vice Jaws (Jaws Only): VISE-29330 . I highly recommend both. ... show more

  • Nice vise.
I puchased this vise at an incredible price. It wasn't even a Lightning Deal or anything like that; just one day the price was drastically reduced for no apparent reason and was, literally, too good to refuse. Unfortunately, once it arrived I had buyer's remorse. For some reason (i.e. my own stupidity), I was under the impression that this was a multi-angle vise similar to the Stanley MaxSteel multi-angle vise . It's not. Keep that in mind when making your purchase. That said, this vise seems to be of decent quality. It's definitely a light-duty vise, being only 3" wide and a clamp-on to boot, but it is heavy for its size and built quite sturdily. The jaws open/close smoothly, so no binding in the main screw. Heck, it even has an anvil and pipe jaws incorporated into the design... on a 3" clamp-on vise! I remember way back in the old days when I lived in an apartment, and there were times I could have used a simple vise like this. If you're married you probably won't get away with this, but for single guys in apartments you could easily clamp this onto your dining room table. Or if you have a WorkMate in the closet, that'll work too. Heck, you could take it to the local park and clamp it onto a picnic bench if you wanted. The point is, the vise is portable, so you're limited only by your imagination for where you could use it. I don't know how much use I'm going to get out of this, considering I already have a heavy-duty 6" vise mounted on my workbench, but for the price I paid it's just not worth the time/effort to return. I'll probably use it as a second support point for those ultra-rare occassions when I'm working on an overly long workpiece; i.e. use the heavy-duty vise for the main grip, but use the smaller clamp-on vise to stabilize the longer workpiece... so long as the workpiece doesn't have to remain level of course, given the size difference between the two vises. Regardless, if you need a light-duty portable vise, this Irwin vise is a great option. ... show more

  • Works fine, but
Its a $20 vise. I got what I paid for - it has a little wiggle in each screw, the edges are a little rounded (not sharp and flat like a nice vise), so it has trouble holding really shallow things. Its been useful for holding things while drilling or dremeling, but it couldn't hold a hub tool (for a bike) without slipping - but of course, there is a lot of force on that (the jaws move a few degrees out of parallel under force, which is enough for a larger nut to slip by). I had it screwed in to the work bench; the vise wasn't slipping, there is just slop on the vice itself. If you just need it for little stuff, this is fine. If you are going to be doing any sort of dissembly or assembly that is going to be torqued, get a better one. ... show more

The vise broke in two on first use. I was using it to try to remove the freewheel from my bicycle and I wasn't able to remove it by any method, so it is possible that the required torque is too much to have expected a vise this size to hold (this is why I gave 2 stars, rather than 1 star).

  • Tiny vice at a tiny price.
This is a tiny little vice which is very useful for holding things. Look at the measurements so you know exactly what you are getting. It’s a very small, built to a price, vice. That being said, for the price it is really useful. I first used it to solder some 3/4” pipes and it is perfect for that. It’s small and I just keep it in a drawer until I need it so it’s out of the way. I find it useful because it is so small, it’s great for those tasks where you need a third hand and Then get it out of your way. Note that the jaws are NOT hardened which is fine for me but you might care. I think I got my money’s worth. I find myself grabbing this one and installing it in my bench instead of using the permanent big one. Since the big one has to sorta be out of the way so I can use the bench, I find myself using this tiny thing all the time since all the work is right in front of me. Anyway, it really is small so don’t be surprised at that. ... show more
