  • Best overall hunting, hiking, work boot
Size: 10.5 Color: Brown (P)
My husband has been wearing these boots for 10 years as his primary foot wear! I was looking for comfortable hiking boots for some time when we decided to order the smallest men’s size for my size 9 women’s feet. The footbed, heel, toe box are uncommonly amazing. The insulation of the boots make them comfortable even at the minus zero Arctic temps here. My husband wears them when it is hot outside too but when it is gets above 80 degrees I opt out for lighter footwear. We use them for some long walks sometimes on cement and this is not the best use for longevity. If you use them for work and you have to have steel toes, these won’t be acceptable even though the toes are very stiff. They seem to run very true to size. No need to size up. Also, these are made in Vietnam and they do a great job so if you buy them elsewhere you might check that. ... show more

  • Got them to wear in a frozen food processing environment
Size: 9 Color: Brown (P)
I drive a forklift in a frozen food processing facility. My work environment ranges from 55 degrees to minus 25 degrees...80% of my day is spent in areas that range between 36 and minus 10. I love Red Wing boots and wore them for years before taking the forklift job. On a forklift, though, I don’t walk around or do as much physical labor as I had been doing and the Red Wing brand doesn’t offer a model with the amount of insulation I need. But Red Wing’s Irish Setter brand offers models with much more insulation. I went with the 860 Elk Tracker because it’s leather, can be re-soled, and it’s price point is similar to other brands of freezer specific boots which can not be re-soled when the soles wear out. They have lasted me almost four years now. My Red Wing size is 8.5D so, to account for the thickness of the insulation, I ordered the Elk Tracker 860 in size 9D. The fit was a tad snug for the first week or so but the insulation compacted somewhat (as expected) and the fit has been perfect since then. I have dropped pallets on them, scuffed them against pallets and metal storage racks while walking around, and the leather has held up well to the rigors of a work environment. Their weakness in my work environment is the soles. The Elk Tracker 860 is made for tromping around in the woods, not working on concrete. They wear out quicker when used “off label” the way I use them...but I expected that. After a year and a half, I had to have them re-soled. I took them to my local Red Wing dealer and he sent them to the Red Wing factory in Minnesota be re-soled. That was in October of 2018 and cost me $90. It gave my boots a second life. The other drawback for work use is that they don’t grip smooth, wet floors (i.e.: restroom floors) well. But again, they are made for the woods. I have slipped but have never fallen. These are good looking, durable boots that keep your feet warm, even when worn for a purpose they weren’t designed for and I can’t recommend them enough. ... show more

  • Silent, practical, and manly.
Size: 11 Color: Brown (P)
These boots look great, and fit perfectly upon arrival. They are a deep, dark red, and the shafts go up to a little higher than mid-shin on my legs. It is a rather snug fit, so there is little movement between the feet and legs, and the boots themselves, making the boots feel comfortable and like an extension of my own legs, rather than footwear. The first thing I noticed when I received these boots is that they are BIG. Each boot is massive. The soles go down about another one to two inches, so when you wear it, you are an inch or two taller than you would otherwise normally be, which helps your stature, and also makes you, in a subtle way, appear bigger to others. The second thing I noticed about these boots is that they are silent. By this I mean the boots, when walking on a solid hardwood floor, will make no sound as you tread across the surface. The soles have a unique padded design to them, and softens each step by dissipating the force of your step into the sole itself. Of course, these are hunter's boots, so a hunter has little use for a boot that is silent on hardwood floor - it has to be silent out in the woods. Well, on my own ventures out in the woods, I notice that as long as you watch where you are treading, and that you bend your knees and move with a softer step, you can become very silent, indeed. In fact, there have been multiple times where I could walk behind someone for five or ten minutes where they would not even notice my arrival, so be prepared to properly announce your arrival before passing them on the road (out of courtesy, if not out of a sense of safety). The bottom line here though is, that in the woods, you will have to sometimes make an effort to walk softly on uneven or leaf-littered paths if you want to maintain covert travel. I've walked many miles in these boots already, and I daresay they are rather comfortable to hike in. I noticed a little discomfort at first, but I think that has to do with being used to walk in such high boots in general, and I've since gotten used to the feel of the boots when going on long hikes. One more thing: these boots are fantastic at keeping the water out. I've stood on the shoreline where the ocean water would come in waves and submerge my feet well up above my ankles, and I noticed that no moisture made its way into the boot. The gore-tex seal is superb. People would warn me not to stand so close to the ocean waves, to which I would laugh heartily at their worries that my boots would somehow be ruined by the seawater as it came flooding around my feet. ... show more
