The tines are very sharp however do not cut thru the weeds as I expected them too. Plus purchasing a handle was an additional $20 at Home Depot. It works well in loose dry soil but the tines do have a tendency to get snagged and bent on thicker root weeds

Weeds had taken over my flower beds. This tool ( grands call it the murder axe) really helped. We were able to clean out all the beds in record time. And husband also used to level out some dirt in the backyard.

I briefly used it after attaching it to a long handle and discovered that I needed to rake all the sticks and other debris before attacking the weeds. I was ending up with all this stuff before the rake could get to the weeds. Once the area was cleared, the rake did a super job digging into the ground a few inches and bringing up the weeds and roots. It also digs up the topsoil a few inches. It is not suggested to be used in a mulched bed unless you choose to use it by hand without a long handle. I did not make a small handle but screwed the rake to a long handle. Maybe screwed to a short handle. Your experiment.
