  • Ultra portable kayak, solid and quick set up. Ultra portable kayak, solid and quick set up.
As an avid kayaker with many solid and other inflatable kayaks I saw this as a possible kayak to use for short local paddles without the need to load a kayak on top of my vehicle, especially if weather may be an issue during my desired paddling day. I was initially leery of trying this because in the past the INTEX brand has been known as the cheaply made "pool toy", disposable, inflatable brand. I did hear that INTEX did get bought out by a more reputable higher quality inflatable manufacturer so I decided to try this. Where I live the water is still dangerously cold to be out on, but I did want to set this up and give my initial land based review. Upon unpacking, I could already tell this was not the old school INTEX made "pool toy". Having had other higher quality inflatables, I could immediately tell this was made of higher quality materials with high quality workmanship. The deflated kayak itself is made from a heavy weight drop stitched material and the seams seem thick and solid. The Kayak comes in two parts; the outer body and a floor insert which are pumped up separately using the included two way pump. The included double action pump (with inflate and deflate modes) is easy to use since I've had experience with similar pumps. I followed the instructions of pumping up the body first to approx. 12lbs PSI. The pump gets hard to pump in the double action position after reaching about 5 to 6lbs. Switching the pump to single action by removing a small plug on the side of the pump allows you to reach the 12lb PSI mark much easier. You then insert the floor and center it as best as you can and then pump the floor up to about 50%, which allows you to easily insert the hard plastic footrest. Then recenter the floor again making sure it almost tucks into the sides of the kayak body, and pump up to the full 12lbs, using the single action on the pump. The kayak body took approx. 100 or more pumps, and the floor took maybe 30. The double to single action versatility of the included pump really helps limit your exertion. I do have an electric cordless pump I use for my larger inflatables, but I feel this pump is adequate for this kayak without tiring you out. For those who may not be familiar with the drop stitch material technology, drop stitch uses not just hollow air pockets inside for inflation, but a fibrous material inside the air pockets giving the completely inflated items a solid almost rock hard feel. This results in the inflated kayak and floor the feel of a hard kayak which does not flex while in the water like traditional hollow air pocketed "pool toys". These are much more stable and give a more secure feeling once on the water, and actually helps in speed and tracking. You can actually stand up on these (many paddleboards are made with drop stitch) with virtually no flexing. The included folding seat threads into solid metal "D" rings and allows for adjustment of placement. I was initially skeptical of this hard plastic, but padded seat at first, but once installed and trying it, I was pleasantly surprised how comfortable and supportive the seat is. The kayak also includes attachments for fishing rods, camera mount, and a cup holder, these are easily mounted and removed by sliding each mount in and out of the mount areas. Also included is a slide in skeg on the bottom. The skeg allows for straighter tracking on the water, yet it is easy to remove in shallower water if needed. Fully completed this kayak seems solid and equal to other high quality inflatables I have or have had. The true test will be on the water, hopefully in a few weeks, but my expectations are that this will be a solidly reliable fun day use kayak. Taking down the kayak for storage was so simple (again, I'm somewhat experienced with this process as having other similar inflatables). Releasing the air and then using the pump in its "deflate" mode completely removes the air in both the body and the floor of the kayak allowing for compact folding/storage. It may take some practice initially to get familiar in how to fold properly for storage/transport in the bag, but I used the suggestion in the manual. The included 5 piece paddle and the included carry case are the two week points in this kit IMO. As a long time avid kayaker, I would not use this paddle. Once I put it together it feels rather flimsy cheap. I will be using my higher quality 2 piece paddles that produce more power due to their rigidity, and an overall more secure solid feel. I will save this paddle as an emergency spare, but not use as a main paddle. The included carry bag is of moderate weight material and its zipper doesn't feel like it will take much strain if the pack is improperly loaded. The kayak body, floor, attachments and pump fit in the bag easily due to the bag being able to open fully like a clamshell. The hard folding seat is what's hard to fit inside the bag. I was able to configure everything allowing the seat to fit in the bag, but it may actually be better to leave the seat out, making the bag easier to load, and most likely extend the longevity of the bag due to its weak zipper. Over all I'm super excited to get this on the water, the kayak itself seems like a quality well made, ultra portable inflatable, ready for spontaneous and easy outings. I will be keeping this in my SUV so I will always be ready for a paddle. ... show more

  • For those who want to get up and go! For those who want to get up and go!
The Intex Dakota Quest is a surprisingly lightweight, stable, sit-on-top inflatable that gets you on the water in under 20 minutes, including the time it takes to pack on your gear. It’s designed for those who want to get up and go! Using the included high-output pump, inflation and installation of the included accessories takes roughly 10–15 minutes. The twist valves are standard and easy to use. The included backpack-type carry bag is a huge plus. It fits in a standard trunk, making it perfect for small-car owners. Partially deflated, the kayak goes in the bed of a pick up truck as well, just be sure to tie it down before you take off. This kayak really shines in build quality & design. It’s made of heavy-duty PVC that is resistant to punctures from stray branches, broken pier supports, or rocks, and I am heartily impressed with how much abuse it has so far withstood! Most of the local fishing lakes around me are littered with trash (not by me!), fishing hooks, broken bottles, and the shores are lined with jagged rocks to prevent erosion. This kayak's hull is proving tough even when it gets dragged up on the shoreline. Sure, I'm careful, but sometimes I slip on the rocks and this boat is taking it like a champ. Each time I inflate it, I'm amazed all over again at how it feels like a rock solid hard- body boat. I inflated it for the first time on my kitchen floor, then I sat my 100lb self on front edge of it, and there was NO give. How they can do that with plastic and air is a mystery, but it's amazing and I love it! Unlike the sit-inside model kayaks, this sit-on-top design offers more freedom of movement and makes it much easier to climb back onto if you decide to take a swim. It's too cold still, we haven't done that, but I intuitively know that I can. This is NOT a flimsy pool raft! It has built-in rod holders and accessory mounts which are useful, and placed within reach, while not being in the way. There's also a bungee array permanently attached so you can secure your things and still be able to reach them. Everything stays neatly where you place it, even your phone and drink. On the water, The wide base and hard-body (once-inflated) make it feel very secure, even in choppy water or when leaning over the side. It comes with a removable skeg (fin) that helps it travel in a straight line, which is often a struggle for inflatables, especially in windy weather. The skeg is also useful in helping keep your kayak in one place, if you dig it into a sandbar on purpose, however, it does cause wear and tear, so you won't want to do it habitually. This is truly a complete "ready to paddle" kit, and has an adjustable, rigid, sturdy seat with a back so you can spend hours on the water without getting too fatigued from being hunched over. Depending on your height, the foot rest may get in your way. My 6 foot tall son pulled it out when he took out the kayak, because after an hour of having his knees bent, he got really uncomfortable. I'm 5'1", it was much better for me! FYI- You need to dry it thoroughly before folding it back up to prevent mold, or just let it air out naturally if you have a place to do that, and don't forget to flip it so both sides get dry. The aluminum paddle with plastic fins works well, but it's a bit heavy for me; if you intend to use this kayak for extensive paddling sessions, you might want to upgrade to a lighter weight wooden paddle, at some point. in my opinion, the Intex Dakota Quest kayak is an excellent choice, especially because it’s stable enough for beginners but has enough utility for fishing or longer paddling trips. Neither me or my son had ever been in an inflatable kayak before, and we still haven't flipped it or gotten wet on the lake, not even once! I don't think you'll find a better quality inflatable at this price, which comes with so many accessories. I'd give it 6 stars if I could, my son gave it 5. Since it's a one person boat, and we only have this one, my son and I don't go out together and there are no photos of us actually using it, but trust me, it's fun, and after a very few minutes, it's all intuitive. You'll be asking yourself why you didn't get one sooner, and I can almost guarantee you'll have a new hobby in kayaking! ... show more

  • Portable Fun and Adventure Portable Fun and Adventure
Intex does it again, another homerun product! Intex has always stood for long lasting, trouble free and just outright well made products, this Kayak is no exception! To start with it's really easy to assemble with a well written and illustrated owners manual, the basics of it are that you lay out the Kayak for inflation and using the included pump you shoot for about 12 psi. The pump has a cap/plug on it so that as you're inflating you can have it fill on both up and down pressure on it. I found that as I reached about 9 psi, I plugged it to only inflate on the down stroke and that allowed me to reach the magic 12. It only took me about 10 minutes to inflate each part. Once inflation is complete then you just assemble the rest of the kayak, the Seat is really well designed with padding on it and a nice angle for using it. The foot rest is adjustable for different heights of people and you can swap around the Cup Holder and Camera Mount to whichever position is best for you. I really really like how portable and easy to carry to the launch area it was, the handles at the front and rear of the Kayak make it easy to transport through the park. The inflated Kayak feels incredibly solid, like Hard Solid, you'd be hard pressed to find a crease or a wrinkle anywhere on this, it's that solid! Which is where we have to discuss Value for the money... to me it always is a question of how durable is the product and how easy it is to use. Let's look at Durability: this Kayak is built like a tank, good clean seams, solid attachment points and super easy to inflate setup and get right out on the water. In my opinion this Kayak represents a great Value For the Money, it's got a three year warranty and I can see it easily lasting that and much longer. I'm happy to Highly Recommend this to you and your family adventures! ... show more

  • Great inflatable kayak kit!
Great inflatable kayak set. We've always rented kayaks but this one comes with everything you need in a convenient backpack style bag. The kayak comes in two inflatable pieces that are made of thick durable PVC material that is pliable enough for easy folding and packing, but firm when inflated. Size wise, this is an average size kayak for one person with reasonable width to give some stability. It fairly roomy and has good balance in the seated position. The paddle snaps together easily and and there are convenient clips on the side of the kayak for stowing the paddle when not in use. The seat has a low back, but gives enough support to lean back into. We have only used this in the pool so far, so the longterm comfort is TBD. The board comes with one removable fin, two rod holders, a cup holder and phone/go-pro stand, which are all well placed and easy to install and access. This kit comes with a dual action hand pump that works really well for inflating the kayak, but it does take some time. As you start getting pressure in the chambers additional effort is needed, but its similar to most handpumps in this case. The pump includes a pressure gauge that works well for inflating to the recommended pressure. By hand it takes about 10-15 minutes to inflate. This kit also comes with a set of patches for emergency repairs. I'm 5' 7" (170lbs) and the kayak is just about right in size and comfort. Larger persons might feel a bit cramped in leg room but there is some room for adjustment with the seat and foot board. The kayak was easy to deflate and fold up into the bag. Surprisingly the bag is oversized so its no problem to get the kayak, pump and paddles to easily fit into the bag. The straps on the bag are nicely padded, and if you use both straps to balance out the weight, its not too bad lugging this thing around. All in all, this is a really good inflatable kayak kit, that comes with everything you need and is easy to pack up and store when done! ... show more

  • Easy to Carry Kayak That is Fun on the Water
I wanted a kayak I could take out by myself without much hassle. This Intex 10.5 foot Dakota Quest sits on top and is perfect for that. I have used it four times on calm lakes so far. Each time I paddled for over an hour. The best thing is how it packs away. It folds small and goes into the included backpack. I carry it on my back to the lake. No heavy lifting or trailer needed. Blowing it up with the hand pump takes about ten minutes. It gets firm and ready fast. On the water the wide body makes it very stable. I felt safe the whole time even when I leaned over. The seat gives nice back support. I like the fishing rod holders too. They keep my poles in place while I paddle. There is also a spot to mount my phone or camera. That helped me get some good photos. It goes straight thanks to the skeg. The paddle works fine. This kayak holds 352 pounds so I can bring extra items with me. After my trips I let the air out and it packs up quick. It seems well built and tough. I would tell my friends to get this one if they want an easy kayak for fishing or just relaxing on the lake. ... show more

  • Really great portable, inflatable kayak by a reputable brand.
This is such a cool concept, and well executed. Intex has been making pools and inflatables as long as I can remember and I've owned several of their products in the past and have a lot of trust in their brand. This kayak demonstrated their extensive knowledge and history with inflatables. It pumps up solid, like crazy solid. I own a few rigid plastic kayaks and they are great, but a pain to transport and store. This kayak is great for small outings, perfect for camping by a lake, storing in an RV etc. Inflation and assembly wasn't too bad, I used the included pump and it does put out some decent air, and I switched it to single to top it off. The attachments, like the pole holders, cup holders and phone/action camera mount are a huge plus. The seat is adequate, but I'm a big fella and it flexes more than I would have preferred, I had to be careful not to put too much pressure on it. The paddle is sufficient for this style of kayak, it's portable and does a decent job, but I prefer my two piece fiberglass paddles. It tracks well with the included little plastic keel. The materials are high quality and seem very durable. It floats well with me and like I said, I'm a big guy, 5'11 and 250lb. It's easy to paddle and didn't leak any air when I used it. It is a bit of a challenge to fold it back to a size it can fit in the bag when I was done, but I made it happen, just make sure all the air is fully deflated out of it. All in all this is a great all in one, portable, inflatable kayak for travel or quick outings at a price point that makes sense for what you get with this set. ... show more

  • Stable, Comfortable Days on the Water — Gear That Lets You Paddle Longer
Hello Amazonians! Sean "The Tester" Chao here, back with another review for you! Today I am reviewing the INTEX Dakota Quest Sit‑On‑Top Inflatable Kayak (68245EP), which I took on lake outings and a coastal bay paddle across three weekend trips to evaluate stability, comfort, and kit completeness. Functionality: The Dakota Quest arrives as a ready‑to‑go package — pump, adjustable 86" paddle, ergonomic seat, skeg, and travel backpack are all included and work together seamlessly. Inflation is straightforward with the high‑pressure pump; once at pressure the kayak felt rigid and responsive rather than floppy. The wide 10'6" deck and generous 352 lb capacity translate into reassuring primary stability, ideal for fishing setups or carrying extra gear. The detachable skeg noticeably improved tracking on longer strokes, and the dual rod holders plus camera/phone mount made it easy to set up for photos or a simple fishing rig. Durability: Construction held up well against typical shoreline use — brief scrapes on sand and mild contact with rocky edges left no punctures or seam issues. The material and valves sealed reliably over repeated inflations, and the included backpack protected the deflated kayak during transport. Load‑bearing performed as advertised when I tested two‑person packing scenarios up to the capacity guideline; just be mindful not to exceed the weight limit for safety and handling. Aesthetics: The kayak’s profile is utilitarian but attractive — a clean deck layout with practical bungee tie‑downs and attachment points that keep gear secure and accessible. The elevated collapsible seat and footrest look modest on paper but provided tangible comfort gains on multi‑hour paddles, reducing lower‑back fatigue and helping maintain a solid paddling posture. Final Verdict: For paddlers seeking a versatile, stable inflatable that doubles for casual touring and light fishing, the Dakota Quest is a solid, well‑equipped choice. It’s easy to inflate, comfortable for long sessions, and rugged enough for regular lake and bay use. If you want a dependable inflatable with useful accessories included, this one delivers. This Product Earns the Sean Seal of Approval! ... show more

  • A well made kayak that is made to travel easily.
This is a well made kayak that is made to travel easily. It is easy to set up and takes about 15 minutes to inflate and get it ready. It breaks down easily too. The pump works well for both inflation and deflation, but just takes some time. Follow the instructions and it is not too bad for a beginner. The paddle is just OK and you might want a better one if you are doing a lot of paddling. It is easy to maneuver in the water. It is also easy to get into the trunk with the case. The material is high quality with strong stitching. The backpack is easy to handle and carry around. The price is in line with what you could get in a sporting store. You can sore some gear in the back netting. The seat is decently comfortable. It can hold well over 300 lbs. ... show more
