I bounced around between the DJI and this camera for a month or two and couldn’t decide. I actually ordered the DJI Osmo Action 4 and returned it because I didn’t like the interface and there were settings I couldn’t get to work. This camera out of the box is impressive. You’re basically getting a mini Leica Camera, but rugged and robust build of an action camera. I was worried about durability. I’m a firefighter full time and wanted something that I could use for body cam footage. You see people do it all the time with GoPro. Let me tell you, this camera is a tank. I was so gun shy about wearing it but I finally did and I don’t know even know why I was worried about it. Plus, my footage blows other guys’ GoPros out of the water. It’s not even a competition. Image quality is like nothing I’ve ever seen out of an action camera. The colors pop and images are sharp and videos are immersive. It can look a bit “over processed” if you dive into the settings or filters too much. Honestly 4k30 on the standard filter looks incredible as it is. I also wanted a dual purpose camera that I can then take off my gear and use at home for family moments and dive into street photography some. This camera does it all. I will say it is worth it to invest in the closeup lens that insta360 makes for this camera because action cameras in general struggle with focusing on super up close objects. Other than that?? Out of the box you’re good to go. I also bought the Xplorer Grip. Not the pro grip, but the original one. I found the xplorer grip pro to be a bit of a drag because you have to take the usb door cover off of the camera in order to use it and that takes away from the water proof rating of the camera. Is it the camera’s fault? No. It’s a characteristic of the xplorer grip pro. If you’re going to LEAVE the camera In the xplorer grip pro and not constantly swap it in and out like I would be then that would be a great option for you. Overall, this thing is an absolute GoPro KILLER. The low light performance is second to none and the image quality is insane. Just buy it. Don’t bounce around like I did, just buy this camera and be done. You won’t regret it. One extra thing to buy, buy the Llano battery charger. It comes with two Llano brand batteries and they’re great. Also give you the capability to charge batteries without taking the camera out of service.

This action camera feels very well made. The build quality is premium, and all the parts feel solid and high-end. Image quality is strong, and it’s very easy to use right out of the box. The stabilization also works really well, keeping footage smooth even when I’m moving around. Overall, it delivers great-looking video, and the camera itself feels reliable in hand. I did notice that colors can look a bit bright in some situations, but that’s easy to adjust in post to match my preferred style. One of the main highlights is the low-light performance, which has been quite good so far, with clear details and usable footage indoors or in the evening. I still haven’t explored all the features yet, and I feel like there’s more potential to unlock. I’m planning to pick up a couple of lenses and mounts to experiment with different perspectives, and I’m excited to keep testing it and discovering more creative possibilities.

Out of the box, the first thing you need to do is "activate" the device using the insta360 app. There's no way to avoid this, and the camera will not function in any way until it is complete. For the first two days I was unable to create an account. It sent a confirmation code that I had to enter, but that never arrived. After some back and forth with support (and almost giving up and returning it) I created a new email at gmail, and used that to register. That worked. Once I got the confirmation code, and the account was created, the camera linked to the app, and updated its firmware. Other than possibly for future firmware updates, I have no other use for the app. There's a bunch of stuff in there that I'm just not interested in at all. That the camera is a brick until you activate it is the only negative thing I have to say about this device. It's a shame they were so short-sighted to insist that you jump through these unnecessary hoops. This is the only thing holding me back from giving this device a 5 star review. Now the good: The quality of the video is outstanding, and is better than my DSLR video at twice the price. I'm not the intended audience for an "action" camera. While I tested out (and was impressed by) the stability tracking walking while filming, that wasn't why I bought it. I intend to use it in a 'static' environment, mounted on a tripod, as an additional angle, almost exclusively indoors, and in not well-lit enviroments. It absolutely excels at low-light filming. It's really amazing how little noise there is on the image. The flip-up screen is great for seeing yourself if you were doing vlog style videos. Being designed as an action camera, it's really small, and lightweight, allowing you to put them in places that would be hard to fit a regular camera. I do wish it had a 1/4" screw thread on the bottom, but luckily I had an adaptor. It's a little tricky to get the SD card out, but given that you can just hook up the camera in USB mode, and pull the files off that way, it's unlikely I'll need to take it out too often. In my first test, I recorded (in 8k) for around 40 minutes, and the battery was still going strong. It does split files in 30 minute chunks, but they joined together seemlessly when I put them side-by-side in Davinci Resolve. The audio is acceptable. Not as good as from a dedicated mic, but good enough for most needs. Would I buy another ? Most likely. It's hard to think what features a newer model would bring that I'd really need that this doesn't have, but if I were looking for additional angles in my multi-cam setup, this is what I'd go for.

Great camera, fantastic bundle. The grip breathes new life into this action camera and the items included in the flash print bundle make it fun to carry around and use as a makeshift Polaroid camera. I'm convinced the prints are better also, at least they definitely look better than fuji film instax prints. Leica lens doing heavy lifting in making it much more than just an action cam. Quality is great. Love this camera, thanks again insta360
