  • Great Tools!
Style: 7pcs 3/8'' 10mm Shanks+14pcs Inserts
I have a 1930's Atlas 9" and needed to cut a very long 25mm shaft down to 17mm. I was not sure my underpowered lathe would be able to handle carbide. I did get some chatter, actually a lot, due to the part length and expected the carbide to chip out or just not cut very well. To my surprise I was able to make .020 deep cuts per side, got a nice curly chip, and the insert stayed sharp throughout the entire job. I did try a hss bit just to compare results but these tools cut better. Great buy, nicely packaged, very durable, and accurate. The 3/8" size is also nice for smaller lathes. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great quality carbide tipped turning tool set with extra tips Great quality carbide tipped turning tool set with extra tips
Style: 7pcs 3/8'' 10mm Shanks+14pcs Inserts
I recently purchased a new metal lathe that included a set of high speed turning bits. The HSS bits are okay for turning soft metals, plastics, wood, etc, but just don't hold up well for the steel that I often need them for. I ordered this set of carbide bits to use for turning steel and so far I'm really happy with them. They are very solid and well made. Each bit came with its own storage box and wrench for changing the carbide tips. There is an extra set of carbide tips included. These bits fit my lathe and work as they should. The quality seems good to me. I'm not a lathe expert but I have and do work with metal a lot. I make handmade knives, and judging from my metal working experience, these bits are really heavy and solid. The carbide of course cuts well and holds up for a long time if taken care of. Just be sure not to crowd them too much; give them time to cut without forcing and all should be well. ... show more

  • Way better than I expected
Style: 7pcs 1/2" 12mm holder+14pcs inserts
I have an old, clapped-out lathe that gets used at random times, mostly when a project goes off the rails and I need to make, modify or repair something in a HURRY. Because of this, I never know what I'll be making or what material I'll be using. Last time I fired up the lathe, I was modifying a brass hose barb to replace a broken fitting on a plastic car radiator. This was on a Sunday afternoon and I needed that hose barb 5 minutes ago. I bought this kit because I'm not the best at grinding HSS tools for the lathe. I wanted something I could throw on the lathe and get to work, rather than take 3 or 4 attempts to get tool geometry right, hone the edge, etc. This set is inexpensive, uses commonly available inserts, and has several different tool formats. I figured I could buy an entry-level set of tools and then upgrade if/when I needed to. So far, I haven't needed to. I've used these tools on a couple of different projects and so far they've been fine. I've turned brass and mild steel, but also used them to reduce the outer diameter of a tool steel spark plug socket for use in a motorcycle engine. The tool left a pretty good surface finish even though my lathe is worn out and tends to fight me a bit, and it cut the relatively hard steel without a single complaint. If you need an entry level set of carbide lathe tools for next to nothing, you could do a lot worse than this set. The inserts have survived some interrupted cuts and other mild abuse that I for sure thought would have done some damage. So far, I haven't had to switch out a single insert. I'm impressed. This is a perfect kit for a home machinist on a shoestring budget (like me), or for someone who doesn't want to spend top dollar while dipping their toes into the machining world. I'll still keep HSS tools around for specific uses (form tools, cutting plastic or softer metals, etc.) but these will probably do the lion's share of the work in the future. ... show more

  • Seem to be solid tool holders and inserts work well.
Style: 7pcs 3/8'' 10mm Shanks+14pcs Inserts+Alu...
So I have been using these with my Vevor mini lathe and I have used the braised carbide that came with the lathe, some HSS tooling that I bought (mostly parting tools), some HSS that I bought and ground myself, and this carbide insert set. I have not had great results with any tooling. I think that the Vevor platform is simply not good enough for that. But I have had the best results from these carbide insert tools. I have turned brass and steel to size, done some threading. I have gotten good cuts and chips that break. I have used higher speeds but I think that is normal. I just had to make a part that had one end that needed to fit a 10mm die for 10mm x 1.5mm threads, while the other end was 9/16 UNF, and the entire part needed to be turned from 5/8" to 9/16". I made a lot of cuts, in steel on a cheap Vevor and I did it all on one insert. Lots of chips. I made as many with brass. I'm also going to say that the box was really nice. I am just starting on the hobby of machining. I have tried things that have worked and things that have not worked. These tools have worked. Unless I need different tools, I expect them to last a long time. I have not used the internal threading tool or the boring bar. I bought the 1/4" set because I was hoping for a really small boring bar. I should have opened my eyes. The video shows a boring bar but there is no bar in this set and the picture does not show such a set. ... show more

  • Good and Bad
Style: 7pcs 1/2" 12mm holder+14pcs inserts
The part that's good is the holders are accurately machined for a good fit and the inserts are very sharp. I can get a good surface finish even with .001" finishing cuts. But there are some flaws with this set that really diminish its usefulness. There are no left hand bits, so no way to turn the rim of a disc, or face toward the centerline. The external threading tool is biased so you can thread to a shoulder, but it is so much easier and safer to thread in reverse away from the chuck with the tool upside down, and for that you need a bit biased the other way. The boring bar has only .75" of relief so you can not bore any deeper without either grinding relief along the bar or angling it in the toolpost to provide the relief, which substantially increases the minimum bore size. The internal threading tool had the same issue, but of course you can't angle it because the insert is square to the axis of the bar. This insert is very small: the maximum thread pitch is about 14 TPI (1.75mm) and the minimum diameter the bar will fit inside is about 5/8" (16mm) so there is absolutely no standard nut you can thread with this tool. The external threading tool is a bit bigger and could go to 8 TPI (3mm), which is still not great. All in all, I'm disappointed in the set and expect I'll only use a couple of the tools to any extent, so what seemed like a low price is certainly not, at least for my use cases. ... show more
