    • Great for me, but what do I know?
I am a novice wood carver, exclusively small sculptures. I don't use this for traditional "wood working" like making decorations for cabinets or furniture or anything like that, so I can't say if this set is good for those purposes or not. But for sculpting, these are my impressions: This set is good! Each chisel is comfortable to hold, the variety of sizes and shapes is great for any kind of cut I'm looking to make. One thing: they do not come sharpened. I wasn't anticipating this, but it kind of makes sense to me now. If you're looking to use these, then sharpening is a regular part of the routine, and you should be sharpening then when you get them anyways. I use a very simple whetstone (Coleman - for sharpening pocket knives) and it works just fine for all the chisels, although I'm sure there are much better options out there. I don't have any experience with any other chisels to compare this to, but I have no complaints! ... show more

I've been power carving for a few years and thought I'd give the traditional method a shot. I definitely like this set a lot, they look very nice and feel good in my hand when using a mallet. They are sharp enough to get started but do feel like there are some very small burs on a few out of the box. Easily corrected though. I like the quality of the steel and do believe they'll hold up nice. The the box is nice too plus I really like the walnut handles. I'm going to use them on this maple sculpture I roughed out with the carving saw. I'll try to remember to update when finished. ... show more

My fiancé had me order these for him and he was wildly excited when he first opened the box, he has a lot of chisels! But these were probably the worst he ever had. He picked them up and was disappointed by how many chips, deformities, and broken edges they had. Some of which look jagged and melted on the ends almost with how poorly the edge was formed. I'm sure some people got what they paid for- but for 100 dollars..? They are basically useless for him in the condition ours came in. Most of the chisels he owns are around ten to twenty dollars and have lasted him years without a single issue, these he can't even use right out of the box.. Really upsetting. The only highlight I guess is that it came quickly, but other then that, there isn't anything positive to say about the chisels themselves. ... show more

These seem good. And the reviews from all the 5 stars sold me. But the 5 star review that said none of the edges were square was correct. I figured I'd have to at least sharpen before I used them. But two of the "accurate machine gound edges" were compleatly curled over (pic included in review: curled edge and not square). So I'm not going to be just sharpen and go. I'm going to have to grind to shape then sharpen. 3 stars not 4 because of that. But the handles and metal look good otherwise. The wood box is very nice quality though. Once I have time to fix, sharpen then use, I'll update this if my opinion goes up or down. ... show more

Received the product quickly. This is my first set of gouges and chisels so not sure what to compare them to. These items did not arrive very sharp so I had to sharpen them myself and look up videos on YouTube to figure out how to do that. Ideally they would have come with some sharpening jig specific to gouges but I was able to do it. Sharpening anything is quite relaxing for me. Seem to be a sturdy product and have done some wood carving with it. Would recommend but make sure to study up in sharpening. ... show more
