  • Excellent Sound Quality, Great for Tidal MQA
Color: Diablo
I use the Diablo with Sennheiser HD 660S unbalanced stock cable. I use the lowest Eco volume mode and I don't turn the volume up very high. The balanced connection, Normal and Turbo volume modes are all too loud for me, though I probably listen at lower volumes than most. I connect to LG V60, windows PC and nVidia Shield. The sound quality is excellent. MQA tracks via Tidal on the PC or Tidal through USB Audio Player Pro on the LG V60 sound noticeably more detailed compared to Tidal HIFI, depending on the track. Obviously I'm not taking advantage of the power the Diablo offers, but for me the easy connectivity to my devices, portability around the house, sound quality and MQA capabilities justify the price. ... show more

  • Awesome
Color: Diablo
Man, this thing is amazing. It drives the Susvara extremely well. I figured I was taking a gamble based on the earlier reviews but I'm guessing there was a bad earlier batch. The earlier reviews were correct about the female USB A cable being an awkward requirement but it's easy to get used to - especially if you swap it for a female USB-A to male USB C cable. ... show more

  • Design flaw or defective batch. Out of the box same prob as other reviews.
Color: Diablo
This unit, in turbo power mode especially, will immediately shut down when driving hard-to-drive headphones such as HEDD Audio HEDDphone with balanced cable (the primary purpose for this amplifier and its power output), and will even immediately shut down with much easier to drive headphones at loud levels (Ananda via balanced cable). It seems like the instant the amp clips or exceeds current limiting, it just shuts completely down if you are running on battery. If you are plugged in to USB power, it will just cut out for a split second and continue. But if you are running on battery, the ONLY way to reset the shutdown, un-brick the unit and get it to work again, is to connect the USB power cord. So if you are out and about using the item portably, and you push the amp slightly hard (even at only moderate levels on current-demanding headphones like the HEDD cans), you can't use your amp again AT ALL until you find yourself a USB power source to plug into momentarily to reset it. This is just absurd. I cannot believe this ever left the lab and was released as a product, given its niche purpose in the world. This unit does this on a FULL BATTERY CHARGE. There are many other reviews online, including the big famous headphone enthusiast site, complaining of this same problem. More inexplicably, I own the iFi iDSD Signature, a lower end unit with less power that cost 25% less than the Diablo, and the Signature does NOT have this problem. It seems to me that either there is a design flaw in the Diablo, or a bad batch of them. Sadly, I'm returning this, without bothering to try another. Too many other people have written about having the same problem with their replacement unit too. Too bad, because when it runs it does sound a bit more refined than the Signature. Fail. ... show more

  • Poorly designed for mobile use
Color: Diablo
I got mine for ~50% of the retail price as prior owner seems to have not been satisfied with the purchase and I’m happy with it for that reason. A number of design flaws here, IMO. 1.) audio connects via a female USB-A port in the back? This is very strange to me and carrying around a thick USB cord is really awkward. Why not use USB-C? This seems like a cost cutting measure to me, unless there’s some kooky audiophile reason to prefer USB-A? I think there’s not. 2.) separate charger that uses USB-C? If you’re going to have a separate charger and a separate port, why not just use a normal A/C port with a pin? The USB-C charging might give some extra charging options, I guess. Goofy, though. 3.) carrying case is not large enough to hold the device and use it in combination with any mobile listening device (phone, etc.) no room for cords. No shoulder strap. A detachable handle is provided. This is stupid and the case would really only be any good at making sure that the device comes into no direct contact with other items while stored in a larger bag or carrying case… 3.) volume knob is bulbous and very sensitive to touch, so moving around with the device (walking, etc.) probably means sudden and unintended changes in volume. The sense you get, using this thing, is that it was slapped together at the least cost and that they simply used whatever was close at hand… at least in so far as connectivity and design for mobile use are concerned. On the side, the thing sounds pretty fantastic. I’m willing to overlook or deal with the devices quirks because I got mine cheap. The reasonable thing to do if you’ve purchased it at full price would be to return it and get a full refund. Find something else that’s better designed for mobile if that’s what you’re looking for. ... show more

  • Fine unit with an issue to consider
Color: Diablo
This is a nice unit but with a caveat. It has substantially more power than the Idsd signature however it uses the same battery. What this means is that when you drive power hungry phones at a loud volume it drains the battery fast. One reviewer noted that it drives their Hifiman HE6-Se fine, well I own them too however I never bothered to test them because when using the Hifiman/Drop Edition XX, which require less power, at the level I like to listen at, it drains the battery in as little as a half an hour, or less in turbo mode. These phones can take nearly full power in turbo mode. This unit is a must for me however because I like to listen very loud. This pairs best with my Audeze LCD-XC which I use on normal mode. Now I don't mind the short battery life because I use an external battery pack strapped to the unit. If you charge the Diablo first, which you should, it will basically run off the battery pack. My battery pack is about the same size as the Diablo which I originally used with the Idsd Signature because it too had a shorter battery life driving the Edition XX,more than a half hour though, and it lasts forever. All in all the Diablo is much better than the Idsd Signature IMHO. It plays louder without breaking up and it is way more detailed. I don't mind using the external battery and don't care about the extra weight so for me the Diablo is a win. I do think they should have used a bigger battery though. To sum things up, this is a great unit but if you have very power hungry phones and you like to listen very loud then the battery life will be unacceptable without using an external battery. ... show more

  • Detailed soundstage. Not quite portable
Color: Diablo
Stunning depth and clarity. Tried it with a few different headphones and in ear monitors. Really great piece of gear. Perfect for a desktop but too heavy to really carry with you on the go.

  • Gorgeous sound
Color: Diablo
This one goes deeper and sounds more transparent than the signature , very subtle but there , however , if you love the Bass boost and 3 D switches , Signature is a better choice , I couldn’t decide , I bought both !

  • If you need iFi support, brace for horrible service
Color: Diablo
This Diablo product has some good reviews ... if it works! If you buy this Diablo and become dependent on iFi's support team to repair or replace a defective Diablo, you will be severely disappointed and frustrated. They offer no live person to speak with on the phone. You are forced to painfully go through a "customer ticket portal" on their website. Imagine troubleshooting a defective Diablo DAC by portal messages back and forth. Average time to receive a response, sometimes in broken English, 10-14 days. That's the level of service for your $1000 device. It took iFi several months to finally declare my Diablo had a bad component - something to do with an "MCU ... computer chip on the main board." When the portal stopped functioning, that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me - this was right after I iFi finally eked out a cryptic message sort of indicating I could return the useless Diablo to them. What a coincidence, the open ticket portal crashed (my only and excruciating means of "communicating" with them) just at the time they finally said I needed to return my Diablo. Some anonymous person left a cryptic message saying a third party which maintains their website was aware of the customer communication portal crash. Still, no person would call to try to rectify the problem with my defective Diablo. I gave my phone number several times begging that someone would call - to no avail. iFi - is all about sales and their short term top line but no corporate maturity to know poor service brings down the brand value and will impair profits in the long run. I own another iFi product. It is not defective but you are on your own in learning how to use their products (e.g., best smartphone settings to maximize benefit of iFi amp/DAC). No phone support in U.S. for any products. "Manuals" and other online content is far from informing customers all they might want to know about maximizing enjoyment of their products. Adding insult to injury, when you in queue waiting for a reply, if you think of something else and add a piece of information through the portal (if it is working), then your ticket goes to the bottom of the queue. An 8-th grader would know better! This company's products would do much better (and customers would be much happier) if a large company acquires iFi and deploys capital sufficient to support iFi products after point of sale. Current parent company, Abbingdon Global Group, had no publicly-available financials I could find, but obviously does not understand - or care - just how poor post-sale support services are for products of its subsidiary, iFi Audio. In sum, if you buy an iFi product and never need to depend on product support, you might be fine. Otherwise, perhaps this and other similar reviews might get their attention and contribute toward prevention of agony like I experienced. ... show more
