Description

These exotic ironwood blanks, derived from the Ironwood tree or ‘palo fierro’ in Spanish, boast stunning grain and dense composition, ranking among the heaviest woods native to the U.S. and Mexico. Thriving in desert and coastal regions, particularly Arizona, California, Baja California, and Sonora Mexico, Ironwood trees flourish at altitudes of 2,500 feet above sea level. The specific species employed, 'Olneya tesota,' stands as the sole species of its genus in the Pacific Southwest. Rather than harvesting live trees, fallen ironwood is meticulously gathered and dried for several years before being harnessed by artisans. Originating from the Seri Indians in 1961, the craft of carving ironwood perseveres among skilled artisans in northern Sonora, Mexico. Each hardwood blank undergoes hand-carving by talented artisans, resulting in distinct variations in shape, color, and grain, rendering each piece truly unique. Embracing natural imperfections, these hardwood pieces add character, making them ideal for woodworking and cutting board projects alike.

As other reviews have said, don't expect burl. Still for the price this is a beautiful (and hefty) piece of wood. Started working it tonight, at only 150 grit this block is very smooth and has a waxy feel to it. It's almost like satin, can't wait to get to higher grits.

Blank received was as beautiful as sample advertised. Ironwood or Desert Ironwood as it is sometimes called is somewhat rare and hard to come by. Good price. Wish it was available in so other sizes. 1 1/2” X1 1/2” X 6” for instance.

Says it’s one solid piece but was sent as two, cut down the middle. Needed the solid piece I was led to believe was being sold to me. Woods pretty and hefty. But still wasn’t what I paid for. The scales had a good thickness which made for lots of different styles of knife scales. First time that I’ve worked with Ironwood, it’s a little bit different than most woods that I’ve used before. It cuts and sands beautifully and shines up like stone or metal. The knife in the picture is finished with just paste wax. It has such a high oil content that it doesn’t need coats of polyurethane or tung or linseed oil. I’m really happy with the way it turned out ... show more

    • Not a block, these are scales. Grain is absolute garbage
I ordered this in expecting a block as the description says. Instead I got scales, and one with horrible grain. It’s not burl wood, so inaccurate description. I returned the first order thinking it was a mistake. Ordered a second one and still the same. Straight grain, not burl, and not a block. Won’t be buying from this vendor again. Was excited as I make a lot of knives and this seemed like a good deal, but from the two orders I placed, they seem like they are being deceptive in their advertising ... show more

    • Gotta remember to read the fine print
I received the ironwood, very nice grain, however. I did not check the dimensions closely enough and turns out to be much smaller than I thought. My fault. For the price I do believe it should have been a bigger piece of ironwood. Just my opinion.

This is a very pretty stabilized ironwood burl, I loved it so much that I bought several more blocks to use on my knives that I make, they turned out really nice and everyone that sees the knives made of this stuff loves them….
