  • The Best of Both Worlds
I have played a 3/4 double bass for decades. As I aged, I switched to electric bass. But with an electric bass, I lost the optics of the double bass. People thought I was playing guitar. Then I found the Ibanez 804UB. I have the optics of the double bass, I have the shorter finger stretch of the electric bass, and I don’t have the weight and clumsiness of the upright. I can sling the 804 over my shoulder and carry my amp. Another problem the 804 solves is dealing with the bass during breaks etc. With the 804 stand, I’m able to work hands free and walk away from the bass if necessary. And best of all, it played perfectly out of the box. ... show more

  • Awesome instrument but mine has initial quality issues
Moments after unboxing and plugging it in, the first things I reached for were not the strings, but the volume and tone knobs. BOTH pots were loose in their sockets, to the point that you would have to twist the entire pot until the attached wires reached a point of tension and the knob itself would turn. This is a major annoyance, after paying over $1k for any product I do not expect to have to spend my time disassembling and tightening components that were not properly installed at the factory. Now, after that initial frustration, this bass is excellent and I find it a real game changer as an e-bassist trying to switch to upright. I have a rental student upright (Strobel MB-80) which I find really difficult to play and even more difficult to get a decent tone out of. The UB804 on the other hand just drips with fat tone and mwah. The bridge is not quite as curved as the Strobel, so bowing is a little trickier, but for fingerstyle playing this instrument excels. The scale is much shorter and closer to an electric. It really has that upright tone and sound. Played with my band last night and everyone in the room was wowed by the tone. If you're thinking of this as a first leap from electric to upright, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. ... show more

  • Great practice instrument or for tight venues
I have some limited experience with E basses over the years and wanted to learn upright techniques. I didnt have space for an acoustic double bass and i also wanted the convenience of portability when visiting friends. This meets all of those needs. It does not sound like an acoustic double bass, its scale length makes it sound more like a fretless E bass but not entirely. The tone is nice enough and it feels good to play. Most importantly, it fulfills the requirements for learning upright technique. The strings are an inch apart, on a radiused fingerboard that allows for bowing. And of course the upright alignment allows for proper arm and hand positioning. The quality is superb and it is a beautiful instrument. Strung with some nylon tapewound strings I get a more low end, mellow tone. I only wish I could buy a ~40” scale version. ... show more

  • Pandemic shopping impulse buy. Keeper
It is thick in its tone and dead carbon fiber life form mass. It has been well worth the cost. It is light weight NOT. lot of fun, I have played guitar 40 years plus. Owned both fretless and fretted bass guitars. Harder than hell to play. I will keep this one

  • Amazing instrument.
I’m a jazz guitarist that wanted to play around with bass. Love the growl and easy to play.

  • Great bass
This is an excellent bass, lightweight with a sturdy stand. I will ultimately use it for special songs with my church praise band.
