Description

Don't be fooled into thinking the Ibanez GSR micro is a toy. It’s made to the same high standards of the other GIO series guitars. The Gsrm25 features, small scale SR body, full sound pickups, the same construction, same materials, and same set-up and inspection as its full size counterparts. Its shorter 28. 6” scale makes it perfect for tour buses, space-restricted home studios, folks with smaller hands, as well as young rockers or beginners.

  • Get what you pay for, I guess - playable, but check the setup out of the box, iffy neck.
Color: Black
Grew up on a Gibson EB-0 so I like short-scale, and I've wanted to play with a 5-string for a while. Came across the GSRM-25 a few months back, saw the how-can-I-lose price, read all the reviews and liked what I saw, then bought one as soon as they were back in stock. Had it for a few days now. [Update, one month later. Got it, got the setup right, played it some, liked it a lot, got distracted and put it down for a couple weeks. Picked it up again two days ago and, long story short, the neck is now warped. Not hugely so - but not a simple truss-rod bend either - sight down one side of the neck and it *almost* looks like a simple bow, sight down the other side and it's obviously up-and-down wavy. Had to raise the action WAY up to get it to (mostly) stop buzzing on the first couple frets, all strings - there's a distinct downbend now 1-2 frets below the nut. Neck wood insufficiently seasoned, warped as it dried out? On examination, grain on the neck wood is quite funky, not well aligned along the neck. And, the return window closed yesterday. Oops. It's still playable (for now at least.) I can still get my hands used to 5-string with this, but this ain't the cheap little fast-action fun-toy I thought I had. Oh well! Once again, ya get whatcha pay for. (Will update if warp gets unplayable. For now, dropping five stars to three.)] [Original, few-days-out-of-the-box 5* review] The build quality is ridiculously good for something manufactured to sell at this price point. (I paid $250 US.) Only manufacturing flaw I've spotted so far is one tiny body patch inside the 1/4" socket recess that didn't get properly painted. Rest of the body is flawless gloss black. Neck is straight and smooth, frets are good, tuners and controls a bit cheap but function fine. Pickups seem OK, no obvious problems, give a nice bright piano-like sound with the factory round-wounds. Haven't really played it enough to have a good handle on how much subtler tonal variation I can get out of it via the controls plus picking position & style, but early signs are good. The one serious flaw out of the box was the setup, and I already half-expected that from the reviews, knew I could deal with it, no biggie. (Some reviews say setup is great out of the box, some say it needs adjusting, a few say the intonation adjustment doesn't have enough range and needs some minor hardware modding.) Action on mine was a bit low and buzzy on the B and E strings, easily fixed - they even give you a set of allen wrenches, one for the bridge height screws. But the intonation on mine, even at the max string-length position of the individual-string bridge-piece adjustment screws, was sharp at the octave for all five strings. All five screws needed shortening by about an eighth to three-sixteenths of an inch to get enough adjustment. (The screw springs on the B and E strings also needed shortening by about a third.) I was too impatient to wait till the local hardware store was open to find matching screws in different lengths - I got out the dremel with a cutting wheel and, one string at a time, took out the screws and shortened them just enough to get enough adjustment range. Voila! Intonation set and it sounded and played great. Just be careful to clean up the screw ends after you cut them, and do NOT cross-thread the screw turning it back into the (cast, a bit soft) bridge-piece, and you're good to go. (And if you're not comfy taking a dremel to a brand-new guitar, well, pay the pro at your local shop - or just buy it from a shop that'll do the set-up.) My guess, some of the people doing setup at the factory have a good ear and pick the right screw lengths out of the bins to set the bridge up properly, some not so much. If you get lucky out of the box, great, and even if not it's easily dealt with. For the price, still five stars. This is a good basic instrument and I plan to have a lot of fun figuring out what I can squeeze out of it. [End original, few-days-out-of-the-box 5* review] ... show more

  • Needs major setup - intonation way off.
Color: Black
The bass plays and sounds pretty good. But if you are actually going to use this for anything other than practice you will have to move the bridge away from the neck 1/2 inch. The intonation is not adjustable enough. Anything you play over the 5th fret will be sharp and get worst the higher on the neck you go. There is not enough room in the bridge to properly intonate it, so you have to move it. Once I did that I could get it in tune all the way up and down the neck. I brought it to a gig and played a set with it and it sounded good enough for a change-up. I've even recorded with it since the bridge was moved. It's a great novelty bass once it's set up right. ... show more

  • Worth it, with some work
Color: Black
I really love this bass, but it needed work on receipt. I expected that based on reviews and am very happy but dinged it a star due to the required work. First, all 5 bridge saddle bolts needed to be cut to be able to correctly set intonation. It's really as if the bridge should have been mounted about .25-.5 inches further away from the neck. I started off on just the B, D, and G strings, and later had to do A and E. If you want to play all the way up and down the neck with proper intonation, this is required. The pickups are really not good. I happened to have some J Bass EMGs from the 80s, they fit well with just a bit of filing and really brought this thing to life. Was able to cram the battery into the volume/tone control cavity. Finally the metallic overtones are very significant (has to play with tone turned all the way down), the neck is fine though. So I went to flatwounds for E-G strings - left B on round wounds. This tamed that harshness, and it still can sound nice and aggressive if I want. After all that this thing is a real treat to play and great for gigging. Love the short scale and it now sounds fantastic. ... show more

  • Had to Return
Color: Black
Received a unit that was cracked on the head underneath the string adjuster so it had to go back. It likely would have gone back anyway as it did not live up to the Ibanez name. The finish on the neck is not smooth and the neck is too thick for the body giving it an unbalanced look. It also isn't a travel bass, it's made for kids with the spacing between the strings really too narrow for adults. Sam Nash was only mildly responsive to my request for return. I called them to request a return authorization and I had to call twice. The first time I sat on hold for about 5 minutes and was then disconnected when the customer service agent picked up my call. During the second call I was told I'd get a shipping label with my RMA# on it in email. All I got was an email asking for photos of the damage. I then went though Amazon to start the return process, and their customer service department responded by sending me a label with someone else's order information, name and address on it. When I responded to that email asking for the correct label, it bounced says address unknown. It's been packed up with copies of the correspondence and the Amazon return info too so that I have all the bases covered and shipped off. I am patiently waiting for my refund, which I hope I do not have to jump through a bunch more hoops to get. ... show more
