  • Great NES replacement console!
Color: Black
This is a great affordable option to play old NES games. My original NES stopped working years ago and was unable to play the games I played in highschool until I discovered this console. The controller it came with was decent, but I was happy to find out the original NES controller works with this. The gun also works but only with a CRT tv. The games do go in kind of hard at first, but seems to get easier after it is used a few times. I am happy with this console and would recommend it ... show more

  • Works with Nintendo cartridges
Color: Black
I was looking for a device to play my old Nintendo cartridges, so I decided to try this one. You need to press the cartridge down firmly to make sure it's inserted properly, but once I did, it worked perfectly. Every game I've tried so far has worked flawlessly.

  • If you're a stickler for details this one may not be for you
Color: Black
Whether or not this system works for you is entirely a question of what you want out of your retro gaming. If you found a few of your old NES games in the attic or basement or grabbed something at a garage sale, this device will get you up and running on modern televisions without a tremendous outlay of cash. If you're that person, this is hard to argue with. It will play your Tetris or Super Mario Bros. cartridges and you'll probably be pretty happy. However... if you see yourself as a "serious collector" either now or in the future, you will likely find yourself dissatisfied with some of its limitations. For many games the colors and sounds are just a bit left of normal, and flash carts won't work either. I'm personally in the first camp. I have a few carts around and I wanted something to play them on my modern television. I'm not actively collecting for the NES, and for that reason this is okay for now. There will probably eventually be an upgrade to an AVS, but for now this is a pretty solid first step. ... show more

  • Hyperkin has a good thing going, but needs more work!
Color: Black
This is a pretty decent little console. I feel the bad reviews *might* be from those who clearly set very high expectations from this manufacturer. Which I can understand. Things I've noticed during some heavy testing: -Some audio comes out slightly altered (IE: Konami pause sound effect is softer than it normally sounds), but...so far...all of the music in the games I've played match the original sound w/o issue, which was my biggest worry. -For others that have pointed out the "pink" colors in some skin tones, yes I've seen that too. It seems any character asset that was originally an off-white/beige color now looks more pink. It's not terrible for me, but it is noticeable and will bother those who do not have the tolerance for such a trade-off. Which, again, I understand. -Build quality for the console & controller are very good, though I did notice a very minor bit of lag when pressing the "A" button. Again, not horrible, but still noticeable. I tested the original NES controller to see if it the lag input occurred there, which it did. So, it's something in the console registering the lag...it really could just be the fact that the console's technical priority is making the sure games run in 720p HD. Thus, now 720p HD selling point becomes both a blessing & a curse. The NES games looked really nice, but damn that very slight "A" button lag. SIDE NOTE: For anybody who owns that 150-1 Gaming Cartridge, it'll work just fine! -If you're playing this on a huge HD TV (mine is 55"), definitely play this on 4:3 as 16:9 allows more real estate, but stretches things out too poorly for my eyes. -For those who complained about the difficulty on removing the cartridge, I didn't initially have that issue. But, after trying about 6 games and inserting them a little more forcefully, that was when removing the cartridge was more challenging. So, please make sure you do not insert the cartridge too hard into the slot. The quality of those pins in the console are no joke. The harder you press the cartridge in, the more difficult it'll be to remove it. The cartridge does not need to be pressed so forcefully for the console to recognize the game. I do hope that helps! This console is good, but it can be a lot better. Hyperkin really should work on fine-tuning the color palette transitions & audio more, plus the slight controller lag as I feel this console was a little rushed during development due to the NES Classic madness. Hyperkin was onto something really good here, especially for those who just cannot pay $200+ for other higher-end console builds. If Hyperkin creates an SNES version of this, they have their work cutout for them... ... show more

  • Nostalgic NES seekers - this is the system for you!
Color: Black
Just received my Hyperkin today and I have to report that it is worth every penny. Having missed the whole Nintendo Classic Mini fiasco, I bought this system as a reasonably priced replacement for it. I'm happy to report that it arrived in perfect condition, was very easy to hook up, and works like a charm. Only have four games for it - Popeye, Donkey Kong Classics, Burger Time, and Super Mario Bros. 3 - and found that all four so far work perfectly. One note though, I did clean the connections before I played them just to be on the safe side so I would recommend doing this. As a casual gamer who hasn't played a NES game since probably the early 90's and was looking to "relive the nostalgia", this does the job. I didn't notice any lag to the game play, and I know that some people have mentioned the color differences but I'd have to compare the two side by side to even notice them and they really don't make much of a difference to me for what I want the system for. To all of you that missed the Nintendo Classic and are, like me, just looking to play the original NES games again, I can recommend this system. I can't wait to get more games and play them again! ... show more

  • ** Buyers Beware- Poorly made, Comapny makes you pay shipping to return under warranty for defective product. **
Color: Black
Games don't fit well in top slot. Also, after about one year of owning it and very little use, the part of the casing that connects the power cord, broke on the inside, so you can no longer attach the power cord. This is poor workmanship. Update: Pros: I contacted Hyperkin directly concerning the one-year warranty and even though it is slightly past the one-year mark, they are going to go ahead and replace my unit with a new one. Con: Even though the reason for replacing the unit is that it is defective/poor workmanship, Hyperkin is still requiring me to ship back my original unit to them, at my cost, rather than sending me a pre-paid shipping label, like just about any other company would do, especially when resolving their own defective product. It does not seem right to charge the customer to ship back a defective product under the warranty, however it is apparantly their company's policy to do so and it is listed as such in their warranty details. So, future potential buyers beware: This product is made very poorly and though they have a one-year warranty, they will make you pay shipping cost to return their defective unit to them, to process the warranty claim. When I addressed how this did not seem right to their warranty representative, he basically said he understood my point of view, but that this is what they require of all of their customers. I am going to return the product under warranty and then they may lose me as a future customer. I told them this potential and that I was writing this review and they did not seem to care, valueing the cost of a shipping label above the loss of their customers. Buyers Beware!! ... show more

  • 95% amazing! 95% amazing!
Color: Black
This thing is most likely a better option than a NES original console, it seems to work better, yes the games fit a little tight but its not horrible. Theres a very slight color difference, on most games you will hardly be able to notice, and sounds aren’t quite as crisp as the original. Overall though its hardly noticeable. For the price, build, output quality its a good deal that I’d recommend. The controller is great too, I actually think its more comfortable than the original NES controllers, the angled corners are a better design than the originals. I recommend this Retron HD for everyone, except those oldschool purists that have a trained ear from playing these games as a kid, to me though the very small differences aren’t worth discouraging people from buying this option. ... show more
