  • Excellent, low price option for hot weather
Size: XX-Large Color: Black
If you're looking at this jacket, you're probably in the same boat as me. You want the protection of a (lightly) armored jacket but you also don't want to roast to death while you ride in warm weather. This jacket is a good compromise. I've worn it every time I've gone riding this year and so far it's worked quite well. The open mesh is very breathable even in mid-80s temperatures (I haven't ridden in hotter weather). At 35 MPH you get enough of a breeze to feel pretty comfortable. Leave the front open and you get even more airflow, though I tend to close it up in all but the hottest weather. It fits me well. I'm 200+ pounds and a weightlifter, and while I'm no Mr. Universe candidate, my proportions are wider and bulkier than average. I ordered a 2XL based on the sizing chart and it fits fine. Very roomy but not cavernous, and I have good shoulder and arm mobility. Nothing feels restrictive but the jacket fits well enough that it should protect me if I have a mishap. I don't know how resilient the armor is. For the $60 that this jacket costs, I'm not expecting it to stop bullets. I consider it better than nothing at all, and it will (hopefully) save me from a couple of bumps and bruises if I end up making friends with Mr. Pavement. I always wear a helmet and I have some armor along my spine and arms. I feel this is a good compromise between comfort and safety, and I hope I never have to prove it. I CAN tell you that the back armor doesn't interfere with my backpack. I've ridden with a pack several times including a couple of moderately long trips. My pack has a sternum strap so it cinches tight to my body. I thought the armor would poke the daylights out of me with a pack on my back but so far it's been fine. I have yet to try with fully loaded pack but if it's a problem, I'll just remove the back armor temporarily. It probably wouldn't do much good if I low-sided with a pack on my back anyway. I'm looking forward to trying this jacket in cooler weather. I may try wearing an insulating liner from an M65 field jacket under it as the weather cools off. If it gets really cold I'll either have to layer, or switch to a thicker jacket. I most likely won't be wearing this in late fall unless I have a REALLY thick layer on underneath, and at that point it makes sense to switch back to my leather jacket. I'm really glad that I bought this jacket. It's kept me moderately cool at speed even on a hot day and on an air-cooled naked bike (IE an oven with wheels on it). It also kept me pretty dry when I got caught in a pretty big downpour at speed on back country roads. My upper body was dry except for where the jacket was open and I felt comfortable despite slicing through a wall of rain at speed. I may explore other options from this manufacturer but for now I'm just enjoying riding in this jacket. ... show more

  • Fantastic for the price!!!!
Size: Small Color: Black
Wow! What a pleasant surprise this was. I was not expecting much for fifty bucks but this jacket is really great for hot weather Summer riding. The ventilation is SUPERB. You get a TON of airflow. Also the quality of the stiching is very good. And the armor (not the thickest but it should provide a reasonable level of protection) is comfortable and feels good. You can upgrade the armor if you wish but I would not bother. Its fine. I already own a $150 textile jacket from AGVSport and this one measures up VERY WELL, and compared to the textile jacket this HWK branded mesh jacket is SIGNIFICANTLY better at ventilation and air flow. I see so many reviews saying that it runs too small and to order a size larger than normal but I do not agree with that. Keep in mind the jacket needs to fit snug, if you order a size too large than it will be baggy and the armor will shift around in the event of an accident and it would cause you to get injured. So choose a form-fitting jacket like this in your actual size. I wear a size small polo shirt and I selected a size small in the jacket and it fits great. Very comfortable. If you are a smaller person that wears small or medium in a polo shirt than I recommend just order that same size in the jacket as you do for a polo shirt. If you normally wear large or XL or above than I dont know what to say about that. I got lucky and got the jacket for an additional 10 dollars off because it was a used customer return but it looked brand new to me. The only problem is that the zipper is of lower quality so keep it lubricated to make sure it lasts a long time. But if the zipper breaks its not too bog of a deal, just search on YouTube they teach you how to change just the head of the zipper it is an easy 5 minute job. So dont let the zipper dissuade you. This is a fantastic Hot Summer jacket. There was no "bonus interior liner" however. So forget about using it in the Winter or when it drops under 70 degrees. You will need a textile jacket for the cold weather. Something with a wind-proof liner ... show more

  • great jacket
Size: XX-Large Color: Red
I was a little skeptical about the quality of the jacket from the price, but i figured it wouldnt have been a major loss, if it turned out to be a case of "you get what you paid for"... So i was pleased to find out when this jacket arrived, that the quality was superior, far surpassing my expectations of what might arrive. The jacket material (where its supposed to be protected), is very thick, heavy duty material, with very good stitching. And it doesnt bunch up, or 'bind you', when you raise or lift outward your arms, like some cheaper jackets would. I.e- that feeling like a jackets had the inner bicept, stitched to the ribs, right along with the expected circle around the armpit, (completely eliminating any real abilty to move naturally, or attempt even basic movements with it on, by any definition of reasonable). The mesh type areas are layered, so theyre breathable, but still provide quite a bit of protection from direct wind, (havent had a chance to experience wet conditions, but im expecting it will pass that testing as well based on the visible quality). Ive even worn this as a light "windbreaker" when not out riding but the weathers just been a bit chilly, and it was perfect for the occasion. Not too heavy i was overheating/removing it, but not so overly mesh that it defeated the purpose. Provided a decent wind shield, and just enough warmth to handle the slight temperature drop. Ive also even worn it on a couple early morning rides, with a hoodie underneath (a good reason to order size or 2 up), for a little extra warmth, without a cost to safety. Its zippers are all heavy duty, with a nice heavy 'clicking' zipper sound as they move, so they should definitely hold up for as long as the jacket does. The velcro also has very deep hooks and loops, so theres no issue with them getting a good strong hold to each other. The crash pads inside it, seem perfectly sized and very well placed, to give you a bit of a piece of mind, that if you go down, the slide wont shave down the parts of you that will make the most asphalt contact. Though i doubt these foam pads would prevent any broken bones, and hopefully i never have to test that, but they should definitely provide an adaquit buffer so you dont get serious road rash! Especially while coupled with the heavy material on the outside of the jacket helping the pads do their job. Now for the less desirable bits- Although i absolutely love the way this jacket fits, it is quite comfortable to wear (especially once you start "breaking it in, and it loses that 'stiffness' of factory new gear). However, you should definitely order up, as it does run small. I also wish the bottom was a bit longer, because if i dont strap the hip straps down tight enough, the jacket 'creeps' upwards during rides, (though its possible that the backpack i usually wear, might have a contributing part in that). There is also a velcro strap that hooks across the neck (a sensation i dont really like much), so i simply leave the velcro unhooked, and tuck both sides inside the jacket after i zip up. It might serve some kind of purpose, but i dont like things across my neck, (and im pretty sure that area of my body wont get much road time, due to the helmet, chin, shoulders, chest and even the spine side behind it, all having a full physical surrounding of it, in the event of an impact or slide.) So i opt out of that particular strap, and a simple tuck inside once the zipper is up, is all it needs. I also seem to remember the ad saying something about the inner parts being removable, but theres definitely no removing things from the jacket, unless you intend to do it with sissors in a destructive kind of way. And theres a random flap with zipper inside the back, which i think was there to help it form to your lumbar better. But in mine, it appears as tho the second side was missed when stitching the bottom, leaving this random flap, with a zipper in the middle, and no identifiable use. But i dont notice it while wearing the jacket, and its on the inside where it cant be seen, so it doesn't really bother me that its there. All in all, i would say whether its to protect your meat from the asphalt grinder, or simply because its a good quality, light jacket, with a sharp look to it, this jacket was definitely a worthwhile purchase. And hwk was a decent seller, the jacket came quick, quality and the price was friendlier then most. Im already looking at more gear from their store, cause some gloves that actually match the jacket, are probably going to replace my current ones... (for the, cough... *necessary* cough... cough..., matching asthetic value, obviously. Saving a few bucks on lower priced gear, doesnt mean you gotta look like an animal or run around dressed like a heathen lol). I gave this jacket a 4/5. The 1 star drop, mainly being because of the length of the jacket, being a bit short and contributing to the jacket 'creeping' during the ride. Still quite happy with this purchase. Hopefully ill never actually get to test it for its 'full' intended purpose, but if the unfortunate day ever comes that i do, ive got a fair bit of confidence that ill be very thankful this jacket will be along for the slide. ... show more

  • Good jacket at a good price
Size: X-Large Color: Blue
Bought XL for hubby as a backup jacket. 5'11"/200 lbs. He says it breaths well and is comfortable & likes the blue color. I can't speak to wearing it in 80/90 degree weather since he wears it with a shirt & leather vest underneath on 60/70 degree days. Now that the morning weather is getting chilly (40s) he started layering a shirt, light sweatshirt & hoodie underneath and it's says it's not restrictive at all and keeps him warm. If you wanted more layers underneath I'd probably size up since I'm not sure how much can be stuffed under the XL jacket. That said, I'm impressed with the fit and quality so far and he has been using this as an every day jacket lately. ... show more

  • Great Jacket. My second HWK purchase
Size: Large Color: Green
This is the second jacket I’ve bought from HWK and it’s great. The first one I bought was for adventure touring and I’ve had it for four years. I rode across the country and back and it’s been through everything you can imagine. And still not an issue, not a tear, rip, zipper issue or thread out of place. It has a removable liner for warmer weather but even with it removed it is too hot., even with the vents open. So I just bought this one for warm summer riding and it’s amazing. The mesh allows for really good airflow that keeps me cool. I was skeptical because there are no vents., but with the mesh, the entire jacket it like one big vent. Even with the air floor, I still feel a good level of protection with the material and armor. It’s the best compromise between cooler riding and protected riding. And it cost $69 dollars. The Klim and Alpine stars cost north of $300, and they are good too, but not any better then HWK and you can outfit a family of four for the same price as one of the other jackets. ... show more

  • For summertime and warm to hot weather riding, this jacket is great!
Size: Large Color: Green
Updated Review ~ still five stars: After riding in this summer’s crazy hot heat I can say that this jacket was a lifesaver. Saying that, I did manage to find a way to ruin it. I hung it off the back of my sissy bar and the muffler melted the zipper and part of the fabric rendering it unusable. I thought about having its zipper repIaced, but came to the conclusion, who does work like that nowadays? When I got home from my ride I pulled out the armor, threw the old jacket in the trash and promptly ordered a new jacket one size up so I can layer more easily for cooler rides. I am glad that I added this jacket to my warm weather riding arsenal after a recommendation from my cousin who owns a BMW branded version. I also own HWK riding pants and their three season jacket with ventilation zippers. In 90 degree plus weather, even with zippers, that jacket was warm! Well this mesh jacket is the solution. It’s mesh, lets the air flow thru, keeping you cool and is armored. My summertime rides are now very comfortable. I throw a hoodie in my kit in case the air chills. Get one, you’ll love it! BTW, this is way cheaper than the BMW branded version and has as many or more of the same features. ... show more

  • Packaged Carelessly
Size: XX-Large Color: Red
The jacket itself fit well and looks to be good quality. However, the way it was packed damaged the molded pads inserted into the arm and back pockets. The jacket was folded so it creased and pads and caused them to be damaged so they don't fit well into the pockets and aren't the correct shape to be worn effectively. ... show more
