Great Axe for the price

Great "Forest or Camp Axe" for the price. Fit & finish were better than I expected. Some folks look for pure, light sapwood hickory for handles, I love the look of a hickory handle laced with a darker heartwood and I have never had an issue with strength or brakeage. (The US Forrest Service did a study and found the same results.) This axe came with a beautiful multicolored handle with grain that was almost perfectly vertical. I could not have picked out a better handle myself. I re-sanded and applied 3 coats of boiled linseed oil and a coat of wax, (this what I do to all my axes.) The axe head itself was also very good. The bit itself had some grinding marks, but very acceptable for the price. Out of the box, the bit was sharp...not razor sharp, It only took twenty minutes to hone it to where I wanted it. When finished, my 23 year old son said "Wow that things is one beautiful axe.) Cutting performance has been great for a smaller "Camp axe" showing no rolled edge after some hard use. Overall, a well balanced, well made axe and for 1/3 the price of a Granfors Bruks, it is an absolute fantastic value. Husqvarna has changed their Swedish axe manufactures in the past, so you may need to consider buying one sooner than later before they change again. I wish Husqvarna would add a larger American felling axe to their line up.

I literally just opened the box and I must say, impressed! I purchased this axe from amazon after doing extensive research and reading nearly all the reviews. The husqvarna multipurpose axe is everything you'd imagine! Right out of the box it screams quality and ranks right up there with the $150-$250 brands. The hickory handle is near perfect in placement, smooth satin finish. It very well may be unfinished wood with a coat of linseed, not quite sure. The axe handle has the company logo and "Husqvarna" printed about 3 inches below the head and pictorials (indicating not to used the axe as a hammer or use a hammer on the axe) and "Hickory" on the reverse as well as a tapered hole for hanging or lanyard use at the far opposite end of the head. The head has a black, rough, blacksmith look to it and sharply stamped with the Husqvarna logo. "HAND FORGED" & "MADE IN SWEDEN" stamped under the logo. The blade has a nice sharp edge, sharper than an axe you'll pick up at Ace, Lowes, Home Depot or any other hardware store. Although I am pleased with the sharpness of the edge and it's "ready to use" manufactured edge, I will be doing some fine tuning to make it cut paper finer than it does. There are 3 distinct sharpening zones indicating the manufacturer (which I believe to be S. A. Wetterlings) does this the old fashion and in my opinion, the right way. The blade is protected by a distressed brown leather sheath that fits snuggly with a button snap, positioned on the bottom back of the sheath and wrapping around the underside of the axe head about 3/4"-1" from the cutting edge. The sheath is held together with four large rivets in the cutting edge position. The sheath's rivets and button snap hardware are bronze in color. I'll personally be treating the sheath with saddle soap for moisture protection. This axe has been widely named on multiple resellers websites and even on husqvarna.com as a traditional multi-purpose axe. Upon removing it from the shipping box the husqvarna label had it named "forest axe" which fits the size, weight (+\- 3lbs) and category of axes this particular offering most resembles. Specs: Total length; 26 1/8 inches. Handle thickness; 1 inch. Head length (cutting edge to heel); 6 5/8 inches. Head thickness (thickest); 1 1/8 inches. Cutting edge length; 3 1/4 inches. This axe is a must have for any outdoorsman for any number of tasks. It's smaller than your typical felling axe but large enough to get the job done. S A Wetterlings Scandinavian Forest axe is basically a splitting (no pun intended) image of this Husqvarna axe in size, weight and everything else! Wetterlings axe comes in at $130! I snagged this one here on Amazon for $54.99! Do the math and after reading this detailed review, you'll see why my review title is VALUE VALUE VALUE! I may just pick up another one, or two just because these types of value for the money don't fall out of trees that often, unless your using a Husqvarna Forest Axe!

If you love good tools you'll love this axe
Style: 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe
26" multi-purpose axe. Lost my old axe when I moved, read good things about this one. I received it in the early afternoon. I put it right to work. BLADE: Edge is very sharp right out of the box. Took some hairs off my arm no problem. The edge is a bit rough especially at toe and heel. I'll take the stone to it later it certainly won't need to touch the file. No gaps between eye and haft. HANDLE: Hickory, the grain is aligned as close to perfect as anyone could ask. Dimensions are comfortable, beautifully shaped. I have small hands if I was making a custom handle I'd make the swell of the shoulder smaller. And I may later. I thought this was going to have a shellac finish I was glad to see that's not so. No need for me to remove a finish before I linseed it. BLADE GAURD: Leather, fits well. As long as it's snapped it's not coming off. Even unsnnapped it held on through shaking. I get that the rivets might cause blade damage if I swing this thing without remembering to remove it. But a better sheath will cost me $20 - $40 and this one came free on a $60 axe. I'm happy. PERFORMANCE: Using right out of the box I took down a 6" tree, split some pieces, trimmed branches. Even used it one handed taking some branches and then shaved some curls. I tried it on pine and maple. The axe handled everything beautifully. It's got a really sweet swing. The edge bites deep and easy. Better for felling and trimming than splitting but really versatile. Multi-purpose axe is a perfect name this tool will accomplish every axe task with grace and strength. Too big for me for backpacking, I imagine a bit small for felling large trees full time, perfect all-round home axe. Easily the best I've ever used. If the other Swedes are better than this they're probably better than I'll ever need.

BUY THIS AXE QUICK.
Style: 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe
This little axe has exceeded my expectations exponentially. This is one of those unexpected "low price - high value" tools for a bushcrafter/woodsman that needs to be taken advantage of before it either is no longer available, or no longer available for a reasonable price. The blade of the axe that i received is straight with ZERO visible defects and would seem to have a very high quality steel that holds a literal shaving sharp edge long after what i consider moderate to hard use. The profile/angle of the blade is as such that it penetrates and chips the wood as though it was a larger, heavier felling axe. The handle in my opinion is just fine if not great. grain orientation is pretty darn good, and thankfully came with no clear coat type wood stains, lacquers or varnishes (that any genuine axe user would and should sand off!) Be advised!! - this axe WILL need a proper sharpening (as any craftsman/tool user should do anyways) - this axe/axe handle WILL need to be oiled or waxed (again, as any true craftsman/tool user should do anyways) Over all, this axe is one of the best choppers i own, and is so reasonably priced that in my opinion it disqualifies the big name brands like wetterling and gransfors-bruks because the quality is essentially the same, with the only caveat being that you are going to have to iron out any crudeness to the tool your self, which is appropriate at its price point. I wager that many of these buyers are the types who would enjoy the process of dressing the tool anyways.

26" Multi-Purpose Axe
Style: 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe
This is a quality axe overall, and I would probably give it 5 stars for value if the head were finished just a little better or if it were about $20 cheaper. Mine was unevenly ground, and had a very sloppy sharpening job which wouldn't be a big deal for me as I expect some touch up on any new axes save Gransfors. My concern is that the edge - which should be completely bright, was not in some places, indicating that the heat treat may have been affected by the excessive heat of the sloppy sharpening job. I fixed the edge with just a little effort, but I'm concerned that those particular spots on the blade have been ruined. We'll see. If it holds up, then this is a very good value axe. I would also note that the head on the axe I received is not finished quite as well as the axe pictured. Again, not a big deal as the pictured axe is finished as one would expect directly from Hulks Bruk and this one is in a slightly more raw state, i.e. only ground bright right at the cutting edge. Expected since it's a bit cheaper than the Hulks branded one. I would give it 5 stars for the handle and the hang. It's a great hickory handle and the head is hung expertly. As far as functional usage for this 26" axe, it's in the same general category as the Gransfors Scandinavian Forest axe on the expensive end and the 24 or 25" Council Tool Hudson Bay 2-pounder with the sport utility finish. It's probably a better value than the Gransfors (granted, not as well finished) and not as good of a value as the Council, but you would probably be happy with any 3 of those listed and for slightly different reasons. This axe is just a tad beefier than the Gransfors in the handle and the cheeks, but this is still a slim-cheeked axe. It's "multipurpose" but really is a "forest axe" in that it's a great size for packing in the woods. It's a fantastic limbing axe but as a splitter, shouldn't be expected to take on big rounds, only as a camp splitter. It's great at felling smaller trees, particularly softwoods or softer hardwoods like poplar. Overall, a great bushcrafting, camp, or limbing axe, provided the heat treat on my blade holds up.

Style: 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe
Let me preface my review with my "credentials": I am not a professional lumberJack, I am not an 'expert' on steel or blade design nor do I play one on the interwebs, I do not heat my home exclusively with firewood I process myself. What I am, however, is a serious and avid hiker, backpacker and rock climber. I spend most of my free time in the woods and enjoy camping and bushcraft passionately. So it is through that lens that I shall be reviewing this axe. That said, this axe is perfect (for me). The balance is absolutely phenomenal. Of course keep in mind that the only other axe I have to compare this to balance-wise is my Fiskars X15, which I also find to be a great axe, but weighted very bit-heavy (more like a traditional splitting axe than a forest axe). I love the thin bit geometry and was able to bring the edge to where I could shave bald spots in my leg with no effort in under ten minutes. The grain on the haft is very tight, and though not quite perfect is very straight at the head (where it counts). Speaking of the haft, it seemed to be completely unfinished. This was not an issue for me (I would have sanded the finish off to rid it of the ugly warning pictures on one side and the Husqvarna logo on the other anywho), but something worth noting. After cleaning it up at the head with a chisel and a thorough sanding I finished it with a few coats of boiled linseed oil at it is a thing of beauty. Likewise I immediately treated the bit guard with a few coats of mink oil as it too arrived rather dry it seemed. The actual size of this axe is perfect for me and the way I intend to use it. Nearly a half pound lighter than my Fiskars it thus packs quite easy on the back. Though too long to be carried inside my pack, this is not a problem for me, as: A, I prefer my axe strapped to the outside of my pack anywho, and B, the additional inches in the handle allow for a faster head velocity and thus a more powerful swing without the added ounces of a heavier head. In the end I simply can't think of any area in which this axe is lacking. Having never owned nor used a Gransfors Bruks I will not even venture a guess on how they compare. However, I will say this, I truly cannot think of any area of practical importance in which this axe can be substantively improved, so I cannot imagine what real advantage GB could bring to the table (other than possibly fit and finish) over this axe. So in conclusion I'll simply say, if you're looking for a fantastic axe for the campsite, bushcrafting or to take with you when you go hiking/backpacking this axe is perfect for you (or at least it is for me). Though you could easily spend more money, I'm not sure you could actually get a better axe for your purpose. Five star all the way!

Buy this AXE! I have done a lot of research and this is a quality tool for the money. Made by Hults Bruks, the oldest axe manufacture in the world. You can really see the quality of the hand forged Swedish steel. The sheath leaves room for improvement, The rivets might / will damage the edge. Nothing a file and a stone won't fix. I wanted the Council Tool Woodcraft axe but, it is 3x as much. Found this axe for 51 bucks! The cheapest on the internet. Was delivered in less than a week for free. If you looking for a quality axe for not a little money, I would suggest this axe. I have see the other postings with broken heads, I question how the "operator" was using the axe. Maybe it was a fault in the forging process but, somehow I doubt it. Whatever you do, don't hammer the poll or used the side of the side as a hammer. I have seen on Youtube Bushcraft Heros, someone tried this with his axe and broke the haft / handle near the head. Use the tool as it was intended. I have also read that people wanted a heavier axe. Well they are just uneducated. The tool is the perfect weight and length for the job it was intended to do. If you want a felling axe or a mauling axe, get a felling axe of a maul. This head is designed for felling small trees, clearing branches and lite chopping and splitting fire wood . A perfect CAMP AXE. Thus the name MULTI PURPOSE AXE! I think these people who make ignorant comments should just go to Lowe's and buy a Kobalt Made in China Axe and shut the hell up! Buy the AXE you will be very happy with it and it is not a waste of money.

Nice axe
Style: 26" Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe
This is a surprisingly nice quality axe. This size axe used to be called the Hudson Bay axe. It is appropriate for canoe camping and medium work like limbing branches, clearing scrub trees, chopping wood up to about 8" diameter, and splitting logs up to about 8" diameter It is much better than any hatchet, but not as effective as a full sized 3.5 lb axe. The head has the taper of an expensive Swedish made axe (and this is a Swedish made axe). The forging and balance is good. The "hang" is good. The price is about half the price of an expensive well known Swedish axe, but there are some compromises. The sharpening if the axe upon arrival is very rough as if it were hurried or an afterthought. The blade work is completely unfinished as if they expect the buyer to sharpen and clean it up. This makes this axe truly a "diamond in the rough". However, the reality is that every woodsman is going to sharpen and finish his axe head to his own perfection anyway no matter how perfect it arrives out of the box. So this is not of great concern, but it is surprising seeing that the axe is otherwise of very nice quality The grain of the axe handle so OK, but not perfect. Rather than being parallel/perpendicular with the axe head, the grain of the wood is at a slight angle. Not too bad, but not perfect either. If you want perfect, then spend twice as much for the famous brand(s). Still, this axe will outlive most of its owners. I already sharpened and cleaned up my axe head blade and have it perfect. I have used it to clear ski paths, and make kindling of some large logs. It is excellent for my camping needs and I am thrilled with this beautiful axe
