  • Hard to beat this one for the price.
I bought this primarily for making leather sheaths, but I found this to be a very solidly made hatchet. I have a few examples from the other high-end Swedish forges, and there is no question that this Husqvarna doesn't quite have the same refinements as the options that are 2-3 times the price. That said, I think this is perhaps the best buy for the money without a doubt. I have done some research and it appears that this hatchet is made by the same forge that produces Wetterlings axes. It is unclear if the Swedish steel used in the Husqvarna is of the same quality, but my impression is that the steel is of very good quality. The hatchet does not arrive razor sharp like you might see on a higher priced brand, but it did come with a good working edge that can easily be cleaned up with minimal effort if you so desire. Without touching up the edge I easily split some oak firewood that had a knot in it. The hatchet made easy work of it and cut through the knot and curved grain with no problem. The edge also remained sharp. There is also enough weight to the head to make chopping easier, although some may find that the shape of the bit isn't the best for finer work. This hatchet is fitted with a nicely profiled hickory handle that is attached to the head using a wooden wedge and round metal wedge. The addition of the metal wedge is probably overkill, but I think it's a great detail, especially at this price point. The handle on my specimen came with a tight and straight grain and the orientation was only slightly on an angle to the head of the hatchet. The only gripe I have is that the handle is a bit thick where it meets the head, so holding the hatchet close to the blade for finer work is a little less comfortable than on some other hatchets I own. Based on the blade profile, the grind, the weight of the head, and the shape of the handle, you definitely get a hatchet that will handle chopping and splitting like a champ, which frankly is the primary function for a camp hatchet. The hatchet came with a simple leather blade cover that cannot be used as a belt sheath, but at least there is something to protect the edge from being damaged should it inadvertently strike your exposed flesh and bone. Summarizing all of this, I think it's easy for me to say that this Husqvarna may very well be the best buy out there for a hatchet at this price point. If you aren't keen to spend 2-3 times the price for one of the high end brands, I really think you will find this one to be an amazing value for a very well made hatchet. ... show more

  • Not perfect out of the box... but a great value nonetheless!
Perfection comes with a price tag. In my experience, there is a nice middle ground where you get the most bang for your investment. This hatchet hits that sweet spot perfectly. So what do you get for $42 and free shipping? My first impression mirrored most here: This is a rather well-built tool. The forging was left clean but with imperfections. No attempt was made to smooth out the rough spots left by the hand forging of the head. It has a very pleasing appearance, however, and was finished with an "acceptable" edge ground into the bit. I'm certain you could press this hatchet into service immediately out of the box, but you'll likely end up wishing you had put a better edge on it in the first place. After 20 or 30 minutes with a puck-type oil stone, the edge was more to my liking. Fortunately, it appears the steel used will hold an edge well, so a minor dressing now and again should keep you going. Next, the handle. This was the one area I didn't expect to need some TLC. While you certainly don't want a glass-smooth finish, this hatchet's handle had the approximate finish of a construction-grade 2x4 stud. I hit it with some medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out the snags and splinters, then cleaned up my dust and wiped it down with a blend of turpentine and boiled linseed oil. In my experience, this blend will soak into the wood better than boiled linseed oil alone, and leaves behind a nice protective coating. There were some positives with the handle, however. The grain of the hickory handle was straight and true, with no visible knots or imperfections. The handle was wedged nicely with a quality round metal wedge driven right in the center of the eye to lock everything together. Bottom line? For roughly twice the price of that cheap-o hatchet with a tubular steel handle on the shelf of the nearest big-box retailer, you get a hand-forged tool that should last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. You'll need to do some work right out of the box to get a good edge on the bit and address the handle finish. When you're finished, though, you'll have a tool that is on par with some of the high-end hatchets that are twice or three times the price. And that, my friends, is a great value. ... show more

  • The Perfect Camping Hatchet for the Discerning Buyer
This is a great hatchet for a great price. As far as I can tell, these are still made by Hults Bruk in Sweden, but sold by Husqvarna at 1/4 the price. Husky might be saving money by reducing quality control, but the issues I've seen are worth the steep discount since they don't affect the performance or longevity of the product. I think the weight is perfect but I don't plan on carrying it very far. It has enough length and heft to get some work done, but still fits in the camping gear like small hatchet. Smaller hatchets just aren't effective enough to make it worthwhile. It's too heavy for backpacking, but I stopped carrying hatchets in favor of a small folding saw, or nothing at all(except a good knife). This, like all hatchets of this design, shouldn't be used for heavy pounding, nor should one pound it through a log like a splitting maul. A solid steel hatchet, like an Estwing, might be more practical if you plan to use it that way. First, the good details: Mine came very sharp right out of the box, not quite shaving sharp, but close enough for a hatchet. A razor sharp edge doesn't last long when you're chopping anyway. It also had straight grain running the length of the handle (as much as possible with the curve of the handle). It's not an extremely tight grain, but better than you'd expect for the price. I should also point out that these issues aren't as important on a short handled hatchet as they are on a long handled axe. Most people won't be putting enough stress on a hatchet handle for grain patterns to make any difference, as long as the wood is good quality, which this seems to be. The bad: Not much. Mine came with a tiny burr at the very tip of the edge. I took it off with my fingernail, and a stone would remove any trace in about a second. I still haven't felt the need to do that. The grind on the edge isn't perfectly symmetrical, or uniform from bottom to top - it fades off toward the top corner, but that's just splitting hairs. It works perfectly as is and would only take a bit of careful sharpening to make it look perfect as well. The sheath is adequate for protecting the edge in a car. Mine won't fall off, but it could work its way off if you strapped the hatched to a backpack. I don't see a need to replace it. I considered paying ~$140+ for a Gransfors Bruk or Hults Bruk but I'm glad I didn't. I feel like I got a Hults at a great bargain. I'm sure there are details that make the other better, but at $35 I'm not afraid to let someone else use this, pound a tent stake, or just use it like the camping hatchet that it is. And it still gives me that great feeling of using a beautiful, quality product that most cheaper hatchets can't. ... show more

  • A good buy in a hand forged hatchet.
Do not buy this hatchet thinking since it looks like a Granfor Bruks or a Wetterlings that it is just as good. This is a good axe but not a GB or Wetterlings neither is it priced like one. First, that black stuff is not all forge scale, it is some kind of thick coating to fill in and hide the imperfections. Does this hurt performance? I doubt it. The bit is haphazardly ground; there are a variety of bevels. It is sharp but not shaving sharp. You are not going to shave with it anyway. The haft (handle) feels like a construction grade 2x4 so plan to do a little sanding with some 120 grit paper. You do not want a glass smooth finish. I stained mine to seal the wood and like a light walnut color better than the raw hickory color. The wood grain is pleasing and straight. I ground all that black coating off and sanded it smooth after grinding out all the little pockets of crud that the black coating hid, I also re-ground the bevel a bit so that it had only one cutting edge. For $40 you can buy a fully finished Estwing but I believe a wood handle will absorb and dampen the vibration from chopping better than the all steel handle. This is a well balanced axe but I think it is heavier than advertised. I have a GB small forest axe but bought it years ago and still use it. I tend to keep the GB hidden away because of the cost of replacement. This axe will be a user and probably every bit as functional as the GB at 1/3 the price. ... show more

  • I like this Hatchet
I like this Hatchet, a lot ! I like the Swedish steel. It was everything I Expected. I received this March 10, of this year 2017. Here's the upside. 1. Grain orientation was good. The grain ran straight end to end on the Handle at 1 o'clock. perfectly acceptable orientation for me. 2. Handle was totally unfinished, no shiny finish of any sort. to me this was important as a shiny finish can and will create Hot spots on the hand if used for a length of time. On my hands anyway 3, Handle was double wedged into the head with a round steel wedge as well as a wooden one and was a nice fit to the head on both sides 4. out of the box, had a decent working edge although it did need a bit of sharpening, also to my liking which I expected and could appreciate 5.I love the width of the handle and the curvature. I have a large/x-large hand and the way of the curve makes for an easy two handed hold for chopping n splitting which I often use. I also like the way it feels when I choke up on the handle for finer tasks The Down Side ,, none for me really,, for others possibly 1. If you have a small to med sized hand there could be some discomfort in the holding of this tool while using it which may possibly lead into improper handling and control issues while using this hatchet. As always, I feel that any tool especially a cutting tool should be comfortable to the user, if it isn't, chances of a accident/mishap are greatly increased. If possible. know what your getting into before you get into it, safely. 2. The leather mask which this comes with on mine was just a bit too loose for me but not by much on the one I received. Nice Quality Mask for sure, just a wee bit loose as in, could possibly wiggle off when packing it.I cured this by treating the Leather with 2 applications of Mink oil and somewhat hand forming the leather to a better fit, which tightened it up to where you couldn't wiggle the mask off. Easy Enough. I then sunk a small Brass grommet in the bottom welt of the mask equal to the size of the rivets and 1 degree less in between of the two forward rivets and ran a leather lace which i tied behind the head over the handle. (I knotted the lace either side of rivet so would not come out, if interested) Easy enough. Hope this helps someone trying too decide as to whether to pull the purchase trigger. I like mine ! I'll do everything with this that I'll do with a more expensive option, just as well. I'd recommend ,, if it fits ya ... show more

  • Excellent Hatchet for the Price
Style: 13" Wooden Hatchet
This is an excellent hatchet for the price with a Swedish forged head. From my understanding its actually made by Hults Bruk and from looking at the pictures of the two, I tend to agree. You get a great hatchet and at less than half the price of the Hults Bruk. The biggest difference is this one isn't quite as finished and the expensive one. By that I mean the edge is not near as sharp. It seems to be ok for general use and has a serviceable edge but you won't be shaving with is as you can with the Bruk. Also, as I ran my finger along the bottom of the head between the heel and handle there were a lot of burrs that could cut skin. They were small and hard to see by eye, but definitely very easy to feel. The good news was they were very easy to remove by a light filing. It was also easy to put a better edge on it since it was so close originally. A nice sheath also comes with it. The handle feels a little thick for me where it meets the head but this would be personal preference. Nothing that can't be addressed if I really wanted to. All in all, this is a great value from a quality manufacturer. It would be hard to do better for the price. ... show more

  • Excellent quality axe.
Update_______ Ok, so I've tried and tested this little axe and now own a GF Small Forest Axe too. The GF is better weighted and better finished no doubt but it's considerably more expensive. I love them both but the fact of the matter is that the Husqvarna is far better value, and for me great to use because I care less if it gets beaten up. Excellent little axe and excellent value. --------------------------------------- I just received this axe so it hasn't been tried and tested. However, based on some of the less than favorable reviews I have read on Amazon, I wanted to give my initial view. This axe is superb quality for the price. It has a true handmade, rustic and durable feel (if you want mechanically clean and precise tools then go elsewhere). The weight is excellent and the leather cover fits perfectly. It is exactly the image on the site. The edge also came razor sharp. It even arrived 3 days before the earliest estimated date. So given some of the conflicting reports I can only assume there is a potential problem with consistency or these guys have addressed the criticisms and have now delivered exactly what their customers want. Some of the older reviews seem to talk of issues so I can only assume it's the latter. I am not an expert and though I did some good online research before the purchase, I do not have direct experience of the GB product line for example. However, I can't imagine that the GBs warrant double to triple the price of this axe. Based on initial impressions I can thoroughly recommend. Excellent quality and value. ... show more

  • Great investment, nicest hatchet I've ever owned!
Solid hatchet, decently sharp multi-purpose edge out of the box. Single bevel as I expected. Hone with a stone, of course. Splitting and chopping are both possible with the design. It's halfway in between, not too narrow or wide a head. Very comfortable in my hand (4" palm, 4" middle finger) though perhaps nearly too thick right next to the head (detail work is still totally doable, however, and it's absolutely perfect when grasped properly 3/4 down the haft). Handle unfinished hickory with beautiful grain, no heartwood, straight / proper direction for lifetime use. I sanded it down, planning to apply Linseed oil asap. Head is unique, hand-forged and beautiful. Yeah, maybe it's been made to look extra beat-up for asthetics but you can easily see real hammer marks from the blacksmithing process. Makes all the difference, I can already tell this axe will be my favorite tool for many years to come. Good deal compared to Grandsfors Bruks and other Swedish makers, for all I know this was crafted by someone in those circles anyways! It's a heavy, sharp and well secured axe head and that's all I need. By the way, the sheath works just fine. Not sure why people have said it falls off, yeah you can buy or make a better one but it seems solid enough. I would prefer canvas/synthetic material to leather though. One note, personal preference, I HATED seeing Husqvarna branding and safety/usage warnings on the handle. They were printed into the wood deep enough that it took a few solid minutes of sanding to remove them. Sorry if that offends anyone, I still plan to recommend the axe to others - and remember - it's still got the Husqvarna logo pounded into the head forever. ... show more
