  • This is the only review you will need to read!
Size: 16 in Color: Buckthorn
Please. Save yourself a return to Amazon and a cold dog! I read many rAmazon eviews and I unfortunately heeded their advice. It was incorrect and I sized too small. Read the Hurtta measurement guideline, measure and then order that size. I ordered a Hurtta Expedition jacket for the 4 dogs in my life - a size 12 Maltese 6.5 lbs, 2 size 14 Cavipooshons, and a size 16 Cavipoo. What were their measurements? a 12", a 14" a 14" and a 16". I did size down initially on my 2 dogs - the Maltese and one of the Cavipooshons. Yes these one size smaller coats did "fit" them. But I realized the coat was not providing the warmth that it could and made a return Since I had a Size 12 in my possession, I tried it on my 12" measured Maltese. Put on correctly, it is perfect! Tightening the neckline is critical. This keeps the coat from migrating back towards the tail, and, keeps their neck warm. The tummy strap is very hard to adjust (Are you listening Hurtta?) but it must be done. It should be tightened enough so you can pull the coat sides underneath nicely and then be kept in place for core warmth. You will notice that the tail cutout is perfectly at the dogs tail. The hip areas, go nicely around their hips. They will not be tight, but they cover the hip areas and sure do block the wind coming from the side. I'm +/- about the leg elastics. I've used them without problems but my Maltese is so tiny they don's seem to add anything. If my dog was running around, they certainly would keep the back of the jacket in place. All of my past dog outerwear is Teckleklub brand - jackets and fleeces. They aren't enough for Rhode Island cold. Under their Hurtta Expedition coat, they both wear a Teckelklub hoodie fleece. The fleece they will wear all day in the house. The Hurtta jackets are put on every time they go out currently with windchills in the teens. I can easily tell my Maltese is warmer with this jacket. She is not rushing right back in and is even willing to walk a little down the street. I am very happy with the jackets. Will try to attach a photo when I get all the dogs together. I bought the yellow version for all 4 dogs. Remember: Measure - and then order that corresponding size. ... show more

  • Arguably the best mass produced dog product I've purchased to date
Size: 20 in Color: Buckthorn
I am an avid hiker. I also love outdoors gear. I adopted a wild rescue dog 16 months ago. The most annoying thing about the dog industry is the lack of options for good fitting and quality harnesses, jackets, and backpacks. Ruffwear dominates this space in the U.S. for a reason. They're the only brand that mass produces all of these products with good materials and thoughtful designs. However, even their most popular harnesses and jackets only have 5-6 sizes to choose from. If your dog falls between sizes like mine, then you're stuck with getting a jacket that's too small or too floppy. Also, they confusingly maintain their chest sizing for their jackets as they do with harnesses, even though jackets should be about coverage. I have known about Hurtta, but unfortunately it's difficult to find their products in stores. The Ruffwear Sun Shower is the only rain or winter jacket I've purchased, and it is my least favorite Ruffwear product. My dog is at the low end of a Medium, so it is floppy and the hind leg straps are so loose it seems like they were meant for a Saint Bernard. Given their winter jackets use the same sizing and designs, I figured they would all have the same issues. So I took the plunge and tried my first Hurtta product, and it surpassed all my expectations. My dog specifications: Pit bull/boxer/German shepherd mix 60-65 pounds, short hair with a light undercoat that sheds 21.5 inch back length, 18.5 inch neck, 28 inch chest Wears a Medium for Ruffwear products Ordered the 20 inch size for the Hurtta Expedition Parka Pros: 1) Slips over the neck the exact same way as a Ruffwear jacket, but eliminates the recessed dual chest straps and uses a wraparound strap that produces a more snug fit and reduces adjustments. 2) Two elastic cord lock adjustment points around the neck. Ruffwear jackets do not have any. 3) Hind leg loops are tighter and stronger elastic than the Ruffwear Sun Shower 4) Leash portal is wider than a Ruffwear leash portal 5) The materials seem premium. My dog has continued rubbing against shrubbery while wearing the jacket resulting in a couple of grass stains and no visible fabric wear and tear. He's sprinted through bushes and palms and crawled under a shed at my parent's house. I think the outer shell is tough stuff. 6) The polyester knit fleece is soft but has a tight weave. My dog sheds a lot. The polyester knit on the Ruffwear Front Range catches everything. So far the Hurtta does not. 7) The insulation is not voluminous. It definitely warms him up, but is not too warm. I'd compare this to an activewear insulating jacket for winter hiking. 8) The legs flaps are not restrictive, he could still sprint at full speed 9) Lastly and most importantly, the fit is phenomenal. After reading a lot of reviews, I sized down ordering the 20 inch instead the 22 inch. I did not want a floppy jacket that could hinder his ability to run or hike for hours. The issue with Ruffwear jackets in Medium (27-32 inch chest) are they feel baggy and droop over his tail and hind legs. This jacket fits very well, isn't too snug, isn't restrictive on the legs, and ends less than 1 inch from the base of his tail. A custom cottage company would struggle to match this fit. I know all dogs are different, but here's a major advantage Hurtta has in this space. Ruffwear offers 5-6 sizes, Hurtta offers 16 sizes!!! There is just no comparison. It is much easier to dial in a good fit with a Hurtta jacket compared to a Ruffwear jacket. It's why I'm likely going to replace the Sun Shower with a Monsoon Coat in the near future. Cons: 1) There are no attachment points on the jacket for tags or a light. The upside of Ruffwear jackets is they include a webbing loop for their Beacon, a fantastic safety light. 2) The unique elastic cord locks built into the jacket are less intuitive and more likely to fail. They should've used standard cord locks 3) Buckthorn is a much softer orange than the product pics suggest. They should have made it high visibility safety orange because the other colors are even less visible. 4) Speaking of visibility, the harness could use more reflective strips. This jacket and many dog jackets add a few narrow strips and leave a lot of blank space. 5) I doubt he will stay dry in heavy rain. 10,000 mm waterproofing is primarily for snow and light rain. Given the material texture I would not trust this to keep water out for too long. 6) The leash portal snap buttons are not useful. A waterproof zipper would've been a better choice, or no closure at all. ... show more

  • Zero stars for the seller, 5 stars for the coat
Size: 18XS Color: Buckthorn
The coat itself is wonderful. I would avoid this seller at all costs… I ordered & paid for a brand new coat. I received a returned & obviously used item. How do I know? The coat arrived in a plastic bag with no tags or any other original product packaging. Straight out of the bag, I noticed not only someone else's dog’s hair on the inside of the coat, but mud spatters on the belly portion as well. I used a lint roller to clean up the foreign dog hair, & then tried it on my dog to see if the size was at least correct. If it fit, my plan was to return this used coat, and order a new one from somewhere else…. To my surprise, this coat fit my EXTREMELY difficult to fit dog like it was custom made for him! I then went online to search for the size I needed, in the color I wanted for him… to no avail. The particular combination I’m looking for is sold out everywhere… and my boy needs a coat now… so I begrudgingly sprayed the muddy part down with Spray n Wash, and threw it in the washing machine. (Which I would’ve done anyway with a brand new one before using it.) It washed perfectly. This Hurtta dog coat is amazing and deserves more than 5 stars…The seller on the other hand, if I could give zero stars, I would…. So get the coat if you have a difficult to fit pooch, it’s very much worth the price with the many ways it’s adjustable, & seems very well made….just buy it somewhere else… ... show more
