  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect but missing hard drive blanks
I like that they packaged it very well for shipping. Any bent parts were minor and obviously caused prior to shipping. It was missing hard drive covers/caddies. I plan to add more storage to it, so it's a minor inconvenience while I wait for the extra drives to arrive. It is not supported by modern operating systems, but for the specs, it's still cheaper than a NAS by Syn...Terr...West...Qna...The VMWare ESXi 6.5 U3 Pre-9 gen custom image from HP plays well with it as a hypervisor. The BIOS was already updated however the Redundant ROM wasn't. It is quite bulky so plan to make room for it. Still may look at a more manageable (smaller) NAS down the road, but it's perfect for running instances of Folding@Home while I wait for the additional storage to arrive. It also comes without a TPM chip which you can find online for around $15 and up. It appears to have room for a PCIe x16 and PCIe x8. I'm not sure the length or what I'll put in them, but it's nice to have the option. It takes SAS or SATA drives with SATA being the more affordable option. For those of you with fan noise...make sure your hard drive caddy has a IC chip on the back side rail and that you are using genuine HP drives or third-party tested drives. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to a site where a person has spent countless hours creating a list of working third-party drives that don't cause the fans to spin loudly. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding investment
Solid investment for a home lab or whatever your small business might need. My server came well packaged, with 2x300gb 10k hdd’s and 7 sticks of 12gb DDR3 RAM for a total of 96GB installed. Even got a free iLO Advanced license out of it. Upon initial boot up, the fan in bay6 failed. Simple troubleshooting steps (I.e. power down system, reseat the fan, boot back up) cleared the error. The only issue I had was severely bent pronged on the hdd caddy (see pictures). I had to actually use my brain and elbow grease to pull the HDD out of its bay because of that. All in all, not bad at all. I mean, I even managed to get ESXI 7.0.2 installed, without issue I might add! Supposedly it’s not supported but we’ll sprint across that bridge later. Picture list : 1) showing fan failure and iLO advanced license 2) showing installed RAM and cleared Fan error 3) HDD caddy issue ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Better Service!
Ordered this up as a server for my small business. I had a few old desktops and laptops that were set up running various software, (security, VMS, record keeping, etc), but I wanted to declutter and set up a central server on a budget. This server fit the bill perfectly, while allowing me to configure RAID for redundancy on my system. TL;DNR: Sent server of different specs, got response and replacement super fast, server runs great! I placed my order, but was originally shipped an incorrect spec server. Incorrect CPU's, RAM, and HDD's. The one I received was damaged on one of the mounting ears as well. I snapped a few pics and sent the seller a message. I was surprised to see that I had received a response within the hour! After going back and forth for a couple hours (due to my business load, NOT due to a lack of response on their end), in more of a chat environment than an email environment, we determined that the item I was shipped was a completely different SKU, and I had a return label in minutes. They shipped out my replacement very quickly. I asked about purchasing a couple extra sticks of RAM (can never have too much), and they included a couple extra sticks of RAM at no charge to make up for the hassle! I have the server up and running now. everything works great! I would have liked to have RAID5 as opposed to RAID 1+0, but I'm happy with redundancy either way. I installed a low cost graphics card to have HDMI support and 1080p resolution, which worked perfectly. I tried to install a PCIe WIFI 6 card, but for some reason I couldn't get that to be recognized at all by the motherboard, bios, or Windows 10 Pro. Not sure if the other PCIe slot in the server is dead, or I received a dud card, but I sent it back and ordered a USB 3.0 PCIe card to try. If this doesn't work, then I'll assume the PCIe slot on the motherboard or riser is dead, and contact the seller again, but I have no doubts that they will get it taken care of! ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Good deal if you know what you are getting
I got this server to use as a virtualization/container Linux server. It works well. There are a few things you should know, however. The device has 8 hotswap bays. If you intend to use all of them, do a custom order or otherwise somehow acquire the extra caddies. They are 2.5" bays, meaning laptop-drive (about 9mm high) size. Be careful, because Amazon sells some 2.5" drives that are taller than laptop drives (15mm high) and those won't work. Next, the bays can only take up to 2TB drives. The RAID controller on the device has no official option to do HBA/JBOD, only RAID. There is a way around that however, there is a Linux command-line tool HP Smart Storage Admin CLI (ssacli) that can be installed, then issue the commmand "ssacli controller slot=0 modify hbamode=on" as root and then your drives will show up individually on the machine (warning, if you do this, you cannot boot from any of those drives. You have to use the USB or SD.) As just mentioned, the machine also has an internal SD card slot and USB port, so you can put your OS on one of those and free up all the drive bays for your RAID. The USB is USB 2.0 so don't expect it to be fast, but it's good enough for a Linux server IMO. I deducted one star because, if you use non-HP components in the system (all my drives are non-HP), the fans are forced to 100% speed and it is LOUD! There is NO way to change this except by installing a hacked ilo firmware, which is terrifying on its own but can even brick your server if you mess it up. If you're putting this server somewhere where the sound won't bother you and don't mind the 2TB drive limit, it is a perfectly usable machine, despite its age. ... show more
