Description

How to Make Melt & Pour Soap Base from Scratch will teach you the long held secret recipes for the popular soap base often called "Melt & Pour Soap," "Glycerin Soap," and "M&P Soap." It also reveals many unknown truths about this popular soap base including that it is not a natural soap.It is the first book published with recipes, methodology and tips on how to make Melt and Pour Soap from Scratch. It is written from the perspective of a Cosmetic Formulator. Whether you are a crafter, hobbyist or business owner this book has everything that you need. This book give you guidance on how, as a small home based business, you can follow the regulations, labeling laws and industry standards for selling soap and cosmetics. My entire journey into the cosmetic industry started with Melt and Pour Soap shortly after I discovered aromatherapy. The roots of our business, Essential Wholesale, all started in December of 1998. Over the years we moved from our home kitchenette to a 600 square foot space, to a 2500 square foot building, to a 10,000 square foot space in a bigger building, and from there we have expanded into 30,000 square feet of that same building. In 2011 our business will be moving to an even larger 58,000 square foot building. As our business expanded we began to focus on natural cosmetics and personal care products. However, I never lost my curiosity and fascination with Melt and Pour Soap. Our relationship with Melt and Pour Soap changed over the years. At first we sold retail customized Melt and Pour Soaps. We then bought and sold the company Critter Soaps. Later we sold thousands of pounds worth of wholesale Melt and Pour Soap base and eventually discontinued selling Melt and Pour Soap because the price kept rising. At the time Melt and Pour Soap was the only cosmetic base we sold that we didn't manufacture ourselves. It simply didn't make sense to wholesale someone else's base when our business model had changed to selling only the bases we manufactured ourselves. It was at this point in our business that I decided it was time to formulate our own Melt and Pour Soap ourselves. It didn't take long to have working formulas, but at that moment we were using up every inch of space in our 30,000 square foot building. We were bursting at the seams and couldn't accommodate the manufacturing and cooling of the Melt and Pour Soap Base in bulk. Our space was so tight we couldn't possibly cool an 8,000 lb batch of Melt and Pour Soap base into multiple 1 lb, 20 lb and 40 lb blocks to sell in bulk. But we got continued requests to manufacture and sell Melt and Pour Soap base.My solution is this book. I decided to share these basic recipes with you to give you the freedom to make your own Melt and Pour base in the quantities that work best for your business. These recipes will teach you the foundational information that you need and give you tips on how to customize your base. Read more

  • Good information
I like this author's books. I hope to use the recipes one day.

  • Don't bother if your looking for natural options for mp from scratch.
I already have recipes for natural at home melt and pour from scratch but someone suggested I check out this book so I bought it. Not a natural recipe to be found in this book. The back section of the book is weird as well. Why bother putting in half finished test recipes? Just an odd book. Glad I bought it used for cheap so I'm not out that much money for something that will never get used. Maybe I can use it to prop up the wobbly table leg. ... show more

  • At long last!!!
I have only been making soap for 4 months and had no problems with the recipes in this book. I was surprised at how easy it was to make my own melt and pour soap. I have made three of the recipes so far and each one turned out perfect. Of course I read the book cover to cover and I read the instructions several times before I started. No pictures needed. All you need is a brain that can follow the simple step by step directions directions, the ability to use a scale properly, and the ability to read the labels on your ingredients. I have made cold process, hot process, and liquid soap this was a breeze! I think it is wonderful to be able to add this to my repertoire. One of the best "how to make soap" books I have purchased. I have no idea which book Chris Redwood (the person who gave it one star) was reading but, it certainly was not this book. Worth every penny! ... show more

  • Finally a book describing this SECRET SOAPMAKING PROCESS!
I received this book yesterday & have already read it! I love it & I thank Kayla for educating us homebased soapmakers about taking our skills to the next level! This is not a book for the "Beginning Soapmaker" but a book for experienced Cold-Processed/Hot Processed Soapmakers who also create handcrafted soaps from Melt & Pour bases and would like to begin making the Melt & Pour soap base from scratch!!!! Please, readers don't critique a process you know nothing about as the first reviewer did and just show total ignorance about the fact that it DOES TAKE LYE TO MAKE SOAP!! I feel bad that this book received less than 4-5 stars! This is the 1st book I have ever had the opportunity to read thus learn about this much guarded-- secretive process! Thank you, Kayla--you have satisfied my desire to finally do this and I have already ordered my supplies needed to make my first batch! ... show more

  • It saved me money
I sell handcrafted soap, and business is good. I'm always looking for ways to save on costs, so I invested in this book. It gave me a greater appreciation for the work that goes into making my soap base and discouraged me from making my own. It is thorough and explains the process well, but I currently use too little base for my small handmade batches to make an additional investment in equipment and large quantities of ingredients. This may not seen a re positive review, but I am grateful. If you like to cook soap from scratch it would be a great guide. If, like me, you are uncertain, order a copy from the library. It explains it well. ... show more

  • Valuable find
There is a vast amount of information on business practice guidelines which I found to be quite helpful and inspiring. It is quite a bit to absorb at first guidance therefore it will be revisited a few times . Although it is not quite what I was expecting from this purchase, it is a valuable find. Thank you for sharing ... show more

  • Disappointing and unhelpful
This was a very disappointing book. I use organic and food-grade ingredients, and I was hoping to find additional information on making my own melt and pour bases. However, this book stresses (at length) that it's impossible to create melt and pour bases without using a boatload of artificial chemicals, surfactants, etc., and that any company that says they're making organic melt and pour bases is essentially lying (I'm paraphrasing). This is NOT true as I continued to dig for info and have since successfully created my own MP bases from organic ingredients. The end of the book is basically the author's notebook on trying additional recipes for melt and pours and seeing what does and doesn't work. Nice info, I guess, but not really helpful and seems to be out of place in the book. The only good info, in my opinion, is the section about the regulations surrounding labeling your product for sale. However, there are better books even for that subject. ... show more

  • Good read
Great book, although it does teach you how to make soap from a less natural perspective due to the additives it mentions.
