  • Wonderful Book!
Format: Paperback
Great How-to book with drawings and great info! The bygone eras have returned to the interest of many in simple structures for off grid life.

  • Build A Cabin The Old Way
Format: Paperback
Exactly what i was looking for. Making a cabin the old way and it even includes furniture and the tools needed. Build a cabin the way Dick would have done for the most part. RIP.

  • Great old school book on cabin construction
Format: Paperback
If you're thinking of building a rustic cabin, this book more or less gives you all the working knowledge to do it. Since it was written before chainsaws and power drills, much of the work could be done quicker. If you find yourself post-apocalyptically needing to use only amish hand tools, well, you're set. This book also lacks actual blueprints so if you're just putting together a cabin and okay with eyeballing it, you're set. The furniture ideas in the last chapter are all fun projects that anyone could do over a weekend and compliment a home or cabin quite nicely. ... show more

  • Greatly appreciated contents
Format: Paperback
Down to earth drawings and descriptions. Helpful hints on building. Having done this chore earlier in my life, I was reminded of it while reading the book. I am giving this to a friend who will be building this coming summer and he can benefit from it greatly.

  • Yes, definitely get this book!
Format: Paperback
This is a great book. Usually how-to books are painful to read but it's more of a nonfiction book than a bulleted step-by-step. I've not read it in its entirety but it doesn't seem anything is left to guess. Leaving anything to the imagination is probably not the best when building a permanent home yourself. We are planning on creating a homestead and building a home the way we want vs the last two homes I bought being someone else's design. Can't move out of this town fast enough and this is a great book to get started. Not a big fan of some of the fencing and furniture (wooden chandeliers and lamps) but there are almost countless instructions on how to build fruit stands, bird and bat homes to protect your home and more. Plenty of authentic pictures of people and their cabins from the late 19th and early 20th century. Big bonus for me. ... show more

  • A good book for sure; more req'd than what's in the woods around you though....
Format: Paperback
I loved the book. It will help you gain a better understanding of many of the details that must be considered when building a log cabin, from tools, to site selection, to the joints used in joining log corners, to the installation of windows and doors. I will say though, that the part of the title "using only hand tools and the woods around you" is total bull. He calls for all kinds of things that cannot be foraged from the woods, like portland cement and 20 penny nails to name a couple. I wish I could find a book that took that title to heart and actually used only natural materials; if such a book does exsist this is surely not the one. ... show more

  • Thorough
Format: Paperback
This book is focused on making a log cabin the old way. As long as you understand that, this is the best book for learning how to build a log cabin. The great bonus of this is that it goes into detail about every aspect of building and living in a cabin. Some of the information is dated, but 90% of it is still amazing. I have another book on building a log cabin from scratch or kit, but I find myself reaching for this book more. ... show more

  • Awesome book.
Format: Paperback
The way it was done 100 years ago. Great for a hunting camp or to live on the cheap in the woods. This book is NOT going to tell you how to build to code with conduit, etc., but it will teach you how to put up your walls and get the roof overhead....then it's gonna teach you how to make FURNITURE for your new cabin out of the same materials you built the cabin out of... I have read over a dozen books on cabin construction; this is one of the two best books I have read on the subject. I plan on rereading it before building my cabin next spring (land paid off, time to build).... ... show more
