Description

For filmmakers everywhere, one of the biggest obstacles to success is understanding how films and TV shows are selected, financed, and produced. But behind every investor’s decision, there is a thought process that goes way beyond whether or not they like a script... If you’re just beginning your filmmaking journey and don't know how content gets funded, or even if you’re an experienced filmmaker who isn’t sure how investors and financiers decide which projects to greenlight, this book is the perfect place to start! We will introduce you to the basic concepts of how projects get selected and financed in simple and easy-to-understand terms that anyone can grasp. By the end of this book, you will:Know what industry professionals look for in a project, and the structures they use every day to get content financed and producedLearn some of the ways that you can incorporate this knowledge into your own projects to give yourself the best possible shot at success!Feel much more confident about talking to financiers and raising moneyUnderstand what investors are looking for and how to appeal to them Filmmaking is an art form… but it’s an expensive art form. At some point, every filmmaker – whether a screenwriter, director, producer, or executive – will need to go out and raise some funding for their project. However, many talented filmmakers never make it because they find the financing process scary, intimidating, and complicated, something that they couldn’t possibly understand or do for themselves. THIS IS NOT TRUE! Film and TV financing is NOT that complicated! It’s something that every filmmaker can learn. And what’s more, it’s something that everyone in the industry should learn – you will become a better filmmaker for it. Stop shooting in the dark! Instead of creating a project and then spending years wondering why you can’t get it funded, why not learn how financing works and then use that knowledge to construct your project in the right way from the start? This book covers:The fundamentals of how films and TV shows get financed and producedThe four key elements that make up the vast majority of production financing, and how you can use them on YOUR next projectHow films and TV shows make money, keeping you and your investors happyHow you can find investors and financiers, and appeal to them so that your next project grabs their attentionAnd much more... This is the stuff they don’t teach you in film school! Film and TV financing isn’t that complicated or scary… Let this book guide you through the process. Please Note: This book incorporates certain parts of the first three books in this series covering Tax Incentives, Sales & Distribution, and Equity Financing. For this reason, if you have already read those titles, you may find parts of this introductory book repeated. However, in this book, we also examine how these concepts can work together, and what filmmakers should be looking for when first embarking on their production journey. This should be extremely useful for all readers, even if you are already familiar with these processes. ABOUT THE SERIES "HOW THE HELL... • Very informative and refreshingly positive
This book was concise and helpful. Ricky Margolis just lays out all the facts for you, in a way that has been so hard to find elsewhere. Financing is not that complicated after all, someone just needed to explain it. Appreciate the positive/uplifting lens to it - that’s been hard to find. Film financing is tough, but it’s not hell. ... show more

I like it because it is clear. I need the information.

  • Amazing Industry Insight!
This book taught me what I never learned in school, and from my experience, the most important part of a successful project! I like that the book is easy to follow and breaks down what seems to be a daunting process into easy-to-understand and manageable steps. This book stays on my desk as a reference for when I have questions about film financing. ... show more

  • Demystifies what film school (and experience in the world) doesn’t teach you
By far the best breakdown of film financing I’ve seen. Might be a bit lite on some of the finer legal points (I’m hoping to find that info in his other books) but generally reflects all of the info I have found, and DEFINES EVERYTHING REALLY WELL. Looking forward to the rest. Don’t let the self-published look of this book fool you, it’s worth it! ... show more

  • Concise and straight to the point
I've thought I had some knowledge on film finance and on how to get my material produced-- this book showed me the ins and outs and proved to me I didn't know much. It's a fast read detailing equity, tax abatements/incentives, investor relations (and how to get it). The author also explains sales agents, distributors, etc. Most filmmakers like myself see FILMMAKER - AUDIENCE. When in reality there's a whole lot more (Chapter 19 The Distribution Journey). A very informative and useful book, as I said, straight to the point. He also mentions TV projects, it seems the same or similar principles apply to television as well. Highly recommended. Look forward to more books along the same line as this. ... show more

  • Direct and succinct
This book reads quickly and is written to be an introduction to many of the steps to financing a project. The author is brief with most of the topics but does not waste pages with unnecessary fluff. I believe if you intend on reading further books in the series, as I do, it is a great way to get started. However, if read on its own you will be left with a cursory understanding of the process, but not enough knowledge to execute a funding campaign. ... show more

  • Excellent Introduction to Film Financing!
Totally lives up to its title! A fast, enjoyable read - and I now know about three to four times as much as I did a few hours ago about film financing - after working as a writer in the entertainment industry for decades. Getting ready to read Ricky's "Business Plan" volume (number 4, I think) - this one was a terrific knowledge boost - looking forward to the next one! Many thanks! ... show more
