What else can i say? F Kemper, F fractal, F line6. For a fraction of what other dsps cost this thing offers exactly what everyone else does. Sound is exactly the same weather recording, or live. And with an expandable library, who needs anything else? Ui is so simple a monkey could do it, light a portable and powerful. • Poor Man's Helix
Size: Ampero II Stomp
The interface may not be as polished as the Helix, but it's pretty easy once you get used to it. I own a Helix LT and a Powercab 212. I had another rig that used to be analog, but I kept coming back to multi effects units, and then I landed on this one. Like the Helix, the stock sounds aren't my personal preference. I like very simple presets where the amp is the main course, and then a little reverb/boost/compression to season it up a bit. I think this unit may beat the Helix in this aspect. It will at least go toe-to-toe with it. It does lack the processing power of the Helix, and don't even try the pitch shifting. If you want crazy wild sounds and want to fill up every effect bank high DSP effects, you'll be disappointed. It can get overloaded, and it's not always clear that you're running into a limit. I like that there are some unconventional amps and effects that were modeled, like the JCM900, a clean Plexi, a couple Dumbles, the old Marshall stomp boxes. You also get different voices, like a Mesa Dual Rectifier or Bogner with vintage or modern voicing. It's like you get the best from the Atomic Amplifire, Boss modeling, Helix modeling, and Positive Grid. And if you'd like to break out your old rack preamp, this has power amp modeling. The amp organization, It has them categorized, and they sound very convincing. I don't know if it's standard, or if it was just my particular version, but it came with Celestion IRs loaded. This is where Line6 has been lacking, and man do those IRs sound good. So if you're looking for something like the HX stomp, your needs aren't super complex, and you want to save some money, this unit is a good value. It deviates from some of the more standard models, but everything is very useful. They haven't tailored their product to any specific genre, but it's also not overwhelming. I have both the Helix and this unit, and since getting this one, I've found myself gravitating more towards this unit. I'd totally recommend this if you want high quality sounds at a more affordable price than the big names. ... show more

  • A nice all in one solution for jamming at home quietly
Size: Ampero One MP-80
The Hotone Ampero One is great for what it does and while it has limitations, for the price it does what I want. I wanted something to jam with through my headphones for both my guitar and bass. I wanted a variety of drum loops with customizable tempos. I wanted the ability to stream music from my tablet into it to play along with and the ability to record any of that with my computer or DAW. I also wanted a looper to play around with. I wanted an item that is fairly cheap and effective and this got me there. Seperate pedals will sound better but will be way more expensive if you want all these features. Helix type units are at least double the price and I didnt care enough about sound quality overall to go that route. That said after dialing in some tones I was happy with a nice lead, a bluesy sound and a rich metal tone for my Strat guitar and I found some decent tone and effects sound for my bass guitars but it did take some fiddling about. The unit is solid and sturdy, plug is long and the I/O works smoothly. I rarely ever use the pedal but it feels solid and stiff but it is quite small (about the size of one of my boss stompboxes) It's default is for volume control for the instrument and I use it as a quick mute to my guitar instead of adjusting sound levels on an axe. I feel like the unit will hold up for a long time in these regards but I have no idea if the touchscreen will hang in there. It seems fine now but thats a review for 12 months of ownership. Preset sounds were definitely on the harsh side of things and I dont think I actually used any without modification. That's where the beauty of the cabs/ amp modeler and effects come in but expect to put in a little tweaking and effort into getting sounds you want. It is much easier to do so if you plug it into a computer and use the software but I actually did most of my fiddling by picking a preset and editing it myself by usually turning some effects down or off. Volume is a tricky thing with this as adding effects like eq/cab etc add their own additional volume tweaking. You will end up having four different effects volumes, your guitar volume and the overall sound volume knob of the machine to fiddle with. There is also a setting in the general that adjusts the line in volume( i use -6 DB for most things) This is fine once you dial in your favorites, but until then BE CAREFUL. DO NOT damage your eardrums with those fancy headphones while you tweak knobs and hop between presets. I dont imagine people will hop between the extremes I do(bass with active EQ and very loud nordstrand big singles and guitars with quiet singles but I can see a person easily blasting their ears with this thing without caution. The drum machine is decent enough and I play bass along to it quite a bit. There are tons of preset rhythms, metronomes and I like being able to run a wide gamut of beats for practice. The tempo is fully adjustable as is the sound level of it. I will usually run a drum loop or song from my tablet(requires a separate headphone cable) for guitar to play along with and this of course sounds better but I find the built in drum machine good enough for me to practice bass along with and just jam. Best way to tighten chops is to stay forced into rhythm and this makes it easy. Hard Rock and electronic funk are some of my favorites but this will have you messing around with playing to trip hop, samba and some bluegrass and be challenged while entertained. The looper is kind of meh. While its fine and does what it is supposed to do it is hard to time the click exactly and the drum track seems to keep rolling even with "sync" selected for it. Could be user error as I havent messed with it much and really have no experience with them previously but I did a few jams with guitar where I would lay down a slow chord progression and then noodled over that for a bit and had a good time. If this is a big concern to you with this device I'd recommend doing more research to see if anyone else can use it well enough. The DAW interface works fine and the USB cable is included. I havent recorded much as it's not really my thing but that fact it works makes it a useful device imo as those units seperate arent all that cheap. Throwing audacity on your PC for free and saving some tasty licks seems pretty easy and sounds good. The effects defintely have hits and misses. I found more usable guitar sounds than bass ones that I enjoyed but that is also sort of the nature of the instruments. Some of the Amp modellers sound great and some of them sound pretty bad. The same with the cabinets, the reverb, the distortion etc. This is gonna be amplied or corrected depending on your instrument, whether you add other pedals first, your headphones/speakers you run to and you preferences so it's hard to say good or bad for "your" style. There are a lot of free presets out there on the internet and test videos for you to get a listen to but I will say I made a particularly edgy bass sound for slap, a great rich bass tone for backing music tracks and a nasty rich guitar distortion for metal chunking(one of the compressors or the NR gates should be turned on a little to rid yourself of the constant hum at high drive levels) that had me feeling like i didn't need my other stompboxes to just play at home. I wouldnt gig with this, but one certainly could with enough tweaking and a suitable amp for additional tuning. The delay and reverb is kind crappy imo but I dont use those often at all. I prefer pedal overdrive/distortion for tone but I could find some decent ones here. Be prepared to spend some time setting and dialing in the effects. Think less is more. Overall I think the Hotone Ampero One is a great buy for someone who wants a cheaper all in one solution for playing at home that still has good sounds if you put in the work and a huge array of features. This is the perfect solution for a new guitar/bass player that just wants to plug in their instrument and headphones and try a lot of things out. Getting drums, loops and a DAW interface make it a great practice tool for even experienced musicians in a very small and affordable footprint. ... show more

  • Excellent Tone Quality
Size: Ampero II Stomp
Very easy to use and get outstanding guitar tones in a very short amount of time. I’m not super tech savvy, but it took me less than 10 minutes to create patches that I’ve been very happy with. Bass patches are good too, but required me a lot more time to get sounding the way I wanted. Two things people should know: if you plan on using this for live settings, there is a bit of latency when switching from one patch to another; it’s also *very* easy to accidentally switch out of the patch you want, or unintentionally turn on the looper. These can be mitigated with practice, but should be known. ... show more

  • Will hang with the big boys
Size: Ampero II Stomp
This modeler has been one of my better gear purchases, ever. Its very easy to use, its well built, and it sounds incredible. The tones will easily hang with a Quad Cortex or FM3. Obviously the device isnt as powerful as those when it comes to crazy FX chains or multiple amp presets, but in terms of raw sound it absolutely hangs. The effects are quite good, but I think HX series are better. My only gripe is that it can be difficult to get the PC editor working with the unit, and there are some weird little glitches in the editor they still haven't fixed, but overall I've used this live a few times and it worked fantastically. ... show more
