  • A Decent Electric Screwdriver and Tool Kit
This nice-looking tool set from Hoto contains a lot of the same tools as an iFixit set; same style of picks and spudgers, but in yellow plastic instead of blue. It even comes with a small magnetic mat to keep you from losing your screws. There are a couple tweezers and a suction cup in there. This is basically the standard sort of kit you'd use to dismantle a smartphone. The main piece here is the electric screwdriver and its bit set. I got this because I'm standardizing all my stuff to USB Type-C charging and phasing out Micro-USB devices. The torque on this unit is very similar to a Wowstick or other, similar pen-style electric screwdrivers out there. Even though there are two gearbox settings, don't expect miracles. You'll have a hard time driving even small screws into 3D printed plastic. For that, I recommend getting a 4-volt or 8-volt electric screwdriver with better torque. For dismantling small electronics with tiny screws, however, this is perfect. I'm not really a big fan of how the case charger works. It's spring-loaded and you have to insert the device in the case and then plug the case in to charge it. Unless you work the screwdriver into the case very carefully, there's a risk of the contact pins inside the case marring the driver's finish, and with these very aesthetically pleasing Hoto tools, that's the last thing you want. The bits appear sturdy, high-quality, and resistant to galling. All in all, I would recommend it, but only for light-duty stuff. It makes for a nice gift set, too. ... show more

  • Great for small electronics!
The kit: This is a portable repair kit, it has various bits and tools for getting into most things. An electric screwdriver is included and the case is integral to this kit, without it the screwdriver cannot charge. Also included is an ESD strap and a USB type-a to type-c cable, neither of which fit in the case. Build: Mostly everything is plastic with the exception of the screwdriver, bits, the tweezers, and the metal spudger. Being plastic is not a bad thing as sometimes it is preferred to use a softer material when prying things open to prevent damaging them. The bits are of great quality, they are magnetically held in place and work perfectly with the included screwdriver. The tools are all comfortable to hold and there are no imperfections or manufacturing defects. The magnetic pad is a great inclusion, it has printed rules and holds magnetic screws in place to keep them from rolling around. It also serves as a divider in the case to keep the bits from getting out of their respective spot. The screwdriver is a major selling point of this kit and it is comfortable to use. It has a metal shell and the ribbed pattern makes a good grip. The gear switch has a positive click and is made of metal whereas the direction control rockers are rubberized. The weight is shifted to the front and the screwdriver is easy to handle thanks to this. It does not appear to be user serviceable. Use: My biggest gripe is that the case doesn’t open flat, but rather stops at 110 degrees. I have no idea why that was done but it seems odd to me. The USB cable and ESD strap cannot fit so I will most likely not carry them with the rest of the kit. The magnetic mat is good for keeping screws orderly, but sometimes it pulls a bit or two up when I remove it. I suspect this might have something to do with the bits being magnetized or demagnetized but It only really picks up the same bit. The screwdriver works well, the gear selector directly impacts how much torque the screwdriver has, but not really the speed. I found the lights to be too dim, they do not make a difference under well-lit conditions. I like how the screwdriver docks into the case and charges through it, but without the case, the screwdriver cannot charge. For most electronics work the screwdriver has enough torque, but if you really need to tighten something down it will lock out and allow you to tighten manually. Using this screwdriver manually is not as comfortable as I find myself pushing the rocker inadvertently. Gear 1 has less torque than Gear 2 (The opposite of mechanical gears) Conclusion: For small electronics, this is a fantastic kit, and have already used it plenty of times to help disassemble controllers and the like. The tools are of good quality, and the kit looks very nice and presentable but with competitors like ifixit the only real advantage this has is the convenient case design and the electric screwdriver. ... show more

  • The best Precision Screwdriver Kit I have; there are ways it could be better
While the HOTO Electric Precision Screwdriver Kit is the best Precision Screwdriver Kit I have, there are ways it could be better. It has many bits in different sizes. The bits are magnetic, which makes them easy to hold onto and keep track of and it makes it harder to lose screws, presuming they are also ferrous and attracted to magnets. It’s really a lot more than a screwdriver set and has a lot more tools than just the screwdriver bits. It has all the tools you need to disassemble and reassemble small electronics, including four spudgers, a set of opening picks, a pry tool, several pairs of very nice tweezers, and a suction cup you can use to remove glass screens. You can recharge the screwdriver through the case using the USB-C port. The screwdriver itself is well-made and feels sturdy in the hand. It has a comfortable grip and it’s motorized. Opportunities for improvement: - The screwdriver motor isn’t very powerful, only 0.2Nm - you can apply as much as 3Nm (150X as much) by hand. - They give you an electrostatic discharge cable and a USB cable but there’s nowhere within the case to store them. - The ports in the case where each bit lies is magnetic (very nice) and shows the type of bit (e.g. Torx, security Torx, Phillips, etc. but doesn't show the relative size of each bit (e.g., H0.7, H0.9); you have to look at the bit itself for that and it’s really small and hard to read. They give you a separate guide with all the sizes but it doesn’t line up with the actual case. But, like I said, it’s the best Precision Screwdriver Kit I have and I have a bunch of them. ... show more
