A Magical Adventure That Captivates and Delights
Format: Paperback
When I picked up "Hooky (Hooky, 1)" by Míriam Bonastre Tur, I was immediately drawn in by its vibrant cover and the promise of a whimsical adventure. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a journey filled with magic, humor, and heartwarming moments that would leave me eagerly anticipating the next installment. "Hooky" follows the story of Dani and Dorian, twin siblings who miss the bus to magic school and find themselves in a series of unexpected and often hilarious situations. The plot is wonderfully paced, balancing moments of action and comedy with deeper, more emotional beats. Each chapter leaves you wanting more, as the twins navigate their way through a world that is both enchanting and perilous. The characters in "Hooky" are truly its shining stars. Dani and Dorian are relatable and endearing protagonists. Their sibling bond is portrayed with genuine warmth and authenticity, making their adventures all the more engaging. The supporting cast is equally memorable, each character bringing their own unique charm and quirks to the story. From the mischievous antics of their new friends to the mysterious motives of those they encounter, every interaction is filled with personality and depth. Míriam Bonastre Tur’s art is simply stunning. The illustrations are colorful and expressive, perfectly capturing the whimsical tone of the story. The visual storytelling is dynamic and immersive, with each panel drawing you deeper into the magical world the twins inhabit. The attention to detail in the backgrounds and character designs adds a richness to the narrative, making each page a visual delight. One of the standout aspects of "Hooky" is its ability to blend humor with more serious themes. While the story is light-hearted and often laugh-out-loud funny, it also touches on themes of identity, belonging, and the challenges of growing up. These moments of introspection add depth to the narrative, making it not just an entertaining read, but also a meaningful one. "Hooky (Hooky, 1)" is a fantastic start to what promises to be an enchanting series. It’s a perfect read for all ages, offering a delightful mix of magic, adventure, and heartfelt moments. Whether you’re a fan of graphic novels or new to the genre, this book is sure to captivate and leave you eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Dani and Dorian’s magical journey. Magical adventure with many twists and turns!
Review from my daughters, Paige (13) and Laly (10): Twelve-year-old twin witch brother and sister, Dani & Dorian Wytte, missed the bus to school. They knew their parents would get angry if the twins missed school, so they went to their Aunt Hilde's for education, but an incident happened at the Floating Rock (the Witches' prison). So, they became wanted criminals and had to find a place to stay. Paige’s thoughts: That's just the beginning of this magical adventure (from the digital comic platform WEBTOON) with many twists and turns! This series is getting better every time you turn the page. I snickered at all those jokes throughout the series. I loved Dani the best because she was often so funny at the most severe times. Sometimes, we need her sense of humor to overcome those profound moments. Dorian was a Mr. Know-it-all and showed off occasionally. And guess what? On September 5th this year, Hooky's third and last book was published. The third is my undisputed favorite of all the Hooky books I have read. The cover and plot are beautiful, and the ending (I can't spoil what happens) was bittersweet. The gorgeous artwork is a long graphic novel you will fly through. This series dives into friendship, family, good vs. evil, and love. It's a series I would reread more than once. Give this graphic novel series to fantasy lovers who love a rich, magical world and beautiful artwork. Laly’s thoughts: Each book was terrific. I loved the story; it was creative, and I adored the art; it was so good! My favorite character was Princess Monica because she was a vivid character with passion and love for her fiancé. She also had a perfect fashion sense! Nico was a funny character and a little tragic because of his backstory. Dani and Dorian were charming. They both were creative characters with their diverse personality. I also loved their matching outfits. The books are thick; you can feel the weight of words. The pages contain many words, so this graphic novel takes work. But the book is worth the words. It's a fantastic witch fantasy tale. Happy Reading, Paige & Laly 📚 ❤️ ... show more

PHENOMENAL!!
Format: Paperback
So happy I finally read this! It was incredible! Had such a great time with this. It's a chunky looking graphic novel, but it didn't feel that way, because I flew through it. When Dani & Dorian missed the bus to magic school, they never thought they’d wind up declared traitors to their own kind! Now, thanks to a series of mishaps, they are being chased by powerful magic families seeking the prophesied king of Witches & royals searching for missing princes. But they aren't alone. With a local troublemaker, a princess, & a teacher who can see the future on their side, they might just be able to clear their names... but can they heal their torn kingdom? This was such a witchy, magical, & at times a little dark, amazing story. The art by the author is STUNNING, & brings everything to life beautifully. It's very cutesy to start, then goes darker like I mentioned. Loved it. Great themes of family, friendship, & hating/fearing what we don't understand or anything different. Glad I had book 2 ready to go after that ending, because I dived right into it. Highly recommend!💜 ... show more

Great series. Stoked to have it. Amazon damaged book a lil on transport.
Format: Paperback
So.. i love the Hooky series. It's great. It's cute. I thought-- like a fool, that this was the whole series in one book. It does not say volume one on it anywhere, or that its part of a volumed series.. so i was sad when I realized that I have to now wait for a possible second book. ;-; the corners of the book on the spine is damaged due to amazon not taking care i guess, so im also bummed for that. Book is great. Series great. I just dont know why amazon gotta damage my book ): ... show more

My 9 year old who struggles to find books she enjoys, doesn't want to put this one down!
Format: Paperback
My 9 year old often dreads reading time. We have always made her read before bed, and usually she is begging to not have to read. I'm not sure if it's reading she actually hates, or mostly that reading time means almost bed time haha. Either way, she has never looked forward to reading. She got this series for Christmas, and it was a GREAT choice. She looks forward to reading, and now when we well her it's time to put the book down for bed, she begs us to let her stay up a bit longer to continue to read! She is on the second one in the series now, and absolutely loves it! ... show more
