Description

Nebula and Hugo Award nominees Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck—writing as James S. A. Corey—make their Star Wars debut in this brand-new epic adventure featuring Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia Organa. The action begins after the destruction of the Death Star in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. When the Empire threatens the galaxy’s new hope, will Han, Luke, and Leia become its last chance? When the mission is to extract a high-level rebel spy from the very heart of the Empire, Leia Organa knows the best man for the job is Han Solo—something the princess and the smuggler can finally agree on. After all, for a guy who broke into an Imperial cell block and helped destroy the Death Star, the assignment sounds simple enough. But when Han locates the brash rebel agent, Scarlet Hark, she’s determined to stay behind enemy lines. A pirate plans to sell a cache of stolen secrets that the Empire would destroy entire worlds to protect—including the planet where Leia is currently meeting with rebel sympathizers. Scarlet wants to track down the thief and steal the bounty herself, and Han has no choice but to go along if he’s to keep everyone involved from getting themselves killed. From teeming city streets to a lethal jungle to a trap-filled alien temple, Han, Chewbacca, Leia, and their daring new comrade confront one ambush, double cross, and firestorm after another as they try to keep crucial intel out of Imperial hands. But even with the crack support of Luke Skywalker’s x-wing squadron, the Alliance heroes may be hopelessly outgunned in their final battle for the highest of stakes: the power to liberate the galaxy from tyranny or ensure the Empire’s reign of darkness forever. Includes a bonus short story, Silver and Scarlet, read by Ilyana Kadushin. Read more

This always made me a little sad because the early books were so fantastic
Format: Kindle
Originally posted at www.csdaley.com Every year I try to read something set in the Star Wars Universe around May 4th. The last few years have been exclusively comics. This year I decided to give a book a chance. I was a little nervous about this because the Star Wars books have been very hit and miss for me. Mostly miss over the last 5 years. I had all but given up on them. This always made me a little sad because the early books were so fantastic, especially the Timothy Zahn books. I was also hesitant to read any books once I heard that they were essentially relaunching the novel line and saying the old books would no longer be part of the Star Wars Universe. Luckily, there were a couple of books I really have been itching to read because they were authors I respect and love so much. Since I had just read and reviewed a Tim Lebbon book I decided to go with Honor Among Thieves by James S.A. Corey (Corey is the pen name for writing partners Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). Anyone who has been reading my reviews for any length of time knows that Corey's Expanse series is my absolute favorite science fiction being written right now. The book is essentially a Han and Chewbacca adventure. When the Empire sets out to control an ancient technology that could change the whole outcome of the war with the rebellion Princess Leia decides that there is only one man to send in to rescue the spy who may be able to thwart the Empire's plan. Unfortunately, that man is not around so she sends Han. What follows is a fast paced ride through one close call after another. Han Solo's best plan is always the one he makes up at the last minute (much to the annoyance of Chewbacca). Han finds the spy Scarlet Hark and together they go planet hopping in a dangerous game of who can find the weapon first. I loved the character of Scarlet Hark. She was more than a match for Han Solo's ego and the book left me wanting to see her again. Han Solo is not an easy character to write. He is a sarcastic, self aware ego maniac and yet we need to love him. Corey pulls it off magnificently. I loved this book. It was my favorite Star Wars book in years and years. It was laugh out loud funny and an incredible story. It gave me everything I love about the Star Wars Universe and more. I hope somewhere down the line Corey gets another shot at a Star Wars book because I would be all in. ... show more

Good team effort for the original Star Wars Characters
Format: Kindle
Some additional cahracter development and insight into formerly unknown talents and capabilities of some of the characters. The new characters introduced were interesting but not well developed. The 'good guys' win as usuual with the usual amount of doubt along the way. There were some surprises and twists, enough to keep you interested enough to come back and finish the book. NOT a real 'page turner' but, a good read to relax and let the day go while you explore a universe far far away. ... show more

Yay for more classic Star Wars!
Format: Hardcover
Honor Among Thieves is the second entry in the new Empire and Rebellion series. The first being Razor's Edge, which I reviewed and gave 5 stars to. I would like to say, before we get started, that I am still super-excited that the Star Wars Extended Universe (EU) is doing classic Star Wars again. The storytelling in the EU has been far too dark and depressing for the last few years now. Now that they are telling tales in the classic era, I have high hopes that we can return to the days of high flying space adventure without the blood-dripping drama, and crushing depression of the last few years. I am also hopeful that Disney's announced reorganization of the EU will include some removal of the more regrettable story lines and plot devices from recent history, including the "dark nest" series, the killing off of fan-favorite characters, and the abomination of driving Karen Traviss out of the EU, and retconning her created aspects of the Clone Soldiers and Mandalorian culture. I don't think more than a small minority of fans liked the pacifist version of Mandalore shown in the Clone Wars TV show. Anyway, as for this entry to the Empire and Rebellion series, we are off on another adventure. We join our heroes in the Rebel Alliance as they gather the fleet looking for where to establish their next base after the battle of Yavin, where the Death Star was destroyed. Luke and Wedge are being sent off on a scouting mission, and Han (who hasn't fully joined the Alliance yet, and is still charging for his time) has been asked to go retrieve a high value deep-cover Rebel Spy from her cover on an Imperial planet, deep in the territory of the Empire. What follows is an adventure told at breakneck speed, and with classic Star Wars excitement and humor. Han is as funny and courageous as ever, while still being practical and street-smart. They even manage to sneak in a bit about him saying he will always shoot first, if someone is waving a blaster in his face. I don't want to give the story away, but suffice it to say, that it ranges from sneaky spy stuff, to betrayal and smuggler-to-smuggler conflict, to space-combat, to counter-intelligence, to daring escapes and impossible missions that must succeed. Razor's Edge was really Leia's story, and it was told mostly from her point of view. Honor Among Thieves is told from Han's point of view, and pretty much stays with him throughout the entire story. Luke plays a minor role in the story, just like he did in Razor's Edge. I assume that the third entry in the Empire and Rebellion series will feature Luke, but for all I know it could feature Lando or the droids, who knows? Get this book for some classic Star Wars good times. It is fun and exciting, just like the original movies. It has humor, and adventure, and it stays true to the canon from the original films. I loved it. 5 stars! --------------------------------- Book Content Guide For Parents: --------------------------------- Sex & Nudity: [0/5] There is one scene where Han has to get undressed with a lady in the room, but she turns her back to him while he is doing it, and he keeps his underclothes on. Violence & Gore: [2/5] Standard PG-13 brawling and action movie deaths of unnamed background characters and minor characters happen. Profanity: [1/5] Standard Star Wars rules apply, the occasional "hell" or "damn" slip through, but any other swearing is done in made-up words that on only have meaning in the Star Wars universe. Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: [1/5] I don't remember any scenes with drugs or smoking, there are a couple of scenes (ballroom & meeting type settings) where drinks and hors d'oeuvres are being served, but no attention to drawn to the fact that alcohol is being served. Frightening/Intense Scenes: [1/5] There are a few tense scenes, but since this book is a prequel to established movies where we know certain characters are alive and well, only new characters and minor characters risk the fate of death, and even with them, that kind of danger isn't super common in this book. There are a couple of battle scenes where people die, but it is all PG and PG-13 kinds of stuff. ... show more

Light read that is best for those new to Star Wars
Format: Hardcover
I had high hopes going into this book. The previous entry in the "Empire and Rebellion" series was pretty good and my favorite Star Wars characters are the main stars. The book starts off well enough with an exciting rescue mission. The action is nice and the banter between Han and the new female character Scarlet is fun. Where it ran off the rails for me was a small thing but it showed that the authors were not that familiar with the universe they were playing in. In one scene, Han is walking through a marketplace when a Noghri female tries to sell him something. While it would be extremely unlikely that any Noghri would be found off of their home planet at this point in the Star Wars timeline (much less a female), it is impossible that Han would recognize her as such. The Timothy Zahn books that introduced the species made it clear they were under the yoke of the empire and were only taken off-planet as bodyguards. And nobody outside of a few in the Empire had ever seen one or heard the name "Noghri" until years after "Return of the Jedi." Later in the book, Luke and a partial squadron of x-wings report that they blew up a Star Destroyer. There are no special tactics or new weapon described that would explain how they were able to do this. In the universe as we know it to this point, this would be near impossible without special circumstances and with Luke still figuring out his connection to the force. On a lesser note, it was odd to have Han portrayed as protector of wildlife toward the end of the book considering his response to the Mynocks in the Asteroid cave of the "Empire Strikes Back". It's nice to see the character further explored but it just didn't feel like the Han we've come to know so far. All in all it was a fun romp, it just didn't feel like it fit in with the Galaxy Far Far Away. In contrast, I would recommend the book "Kenobi" without reservation. ... show more

Solid Star Wars Novel
Format: Hardcover
I have read a good many Star Wars novels. Some of them good; some of them not so good. Honor Among Thieves is one of the good ones. The story takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. While it includes many of the main characters, it is mainly a Han Solo tale. Leia sends Han on a find and rescue mission and he gets caught up in so much more. One of the strengths of the novel is the characterization. All too often, the characters don't "feel" like those we've come to love from the movies. Not the case with Honor Among Thieves. The characterization is spot on, as is the dialogue. Highly recommended. ... show more

The "Empire And Rebellion" Series Keeps Getting Better
Format: Hardcover
The events in "Honor Among Thieves" take place shortly after the destruction of the Death Star. Luke, Leia, Han, and the rest of the Rebel Alliance are looking for a new home base. Fresh off of the destruction of the Death Star, the Alliance is looking to keep the pressure on the Empire. However, Princess Leia has an immediate problem. She must dispatch Han and Chewbacca to locate rebel spy Scarlet Hark. Upon finding her, Han soon realizes that she has no immediate plans to come along. Rather, she wishes to stay behind on a planet where Leia will be attending a conference. Her reason for staying is that it has come to her knowledge that there is someone attending the conference that has certain information for sale that the Empire would destroy worlds to protect. Rather than trying to buy the information, Scarlet has settled on trying to steal it, and Han has no choice but to go along. But, it doesn't take the group long to realize that they may be in way over their heads, for the information is so valuable to the Empire that an entire fleet of Imperial ships has been dispatched to make sure the information doesn't fall into rebel hands. "Honor Among Thieves" is a very good book. The authors have done a fine job of adding new characters into the Star Wars story. Scarlet Hark is the perfect female foil to Han Solo, and old smuggler/bounty hunter Baasen Ray is a fine addition as well. Of course, Han Solo has maintained his wise-cracking ways. The story is well-conceived, and the action flows from beginning to end. I am really enjoying the "Empire and Rebellion" books, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment. ... show more

Loved it
Format: Kindle
So fun from start to finish! If anything I wish it would've slowed down a bit to take in the scenery a little bit more but if you're looking for a quick read that creates really cinematic mental images and almost feels like a comic book adventure this would be a good book for you.

hmmm
Format: Kindle
I am an enormous Star Wars fan. I felt this was written well and that the author got the relationship between Chewie and Han just right. My only problem was that this was the first viable Star Wars novel in a long time that featured Han Luke and Liea. Then why was the entire story about Han? Luke and Liea make nothing more than supporting cameo appearances. A real dissapointment. ... show more
