I had previously tried the 5 tier shelf from sams club -very bad idea- returned immediately to sams because they were so flimsy and wouldn't stay together. So I ordered 2 of the "HOMEDANT Z-BEAM Heavy Duty Wide Size Garage Storage, 5-Tier Adjustable Metal Shelving" units. They were much more expensive then the sams ones I had but I saw good reviews and I figured I would try them out. Unfortunately amazon shipped and the 1 shelf was damaged. Big gash on the back and all the corners of the shelves were damaged. However, 1 of the shelves was perfect. So I started putting that together. Let me say, the ease of putting those shelves together was amazing. You need a rubber mallet but when you have one leg hooked into another you don't need to worry about it coming apart. I easily put it together myself in less than an hour. Those notches Homedant has are not little welded on bolts like sams club, but are actually punch outs of the metal itself and they tighen into the bars perfectly! The shelves are MDF but they are thicker than what you would get elsewhere. And with those Z rails I have no doubt that they will easily hold up as long as they don't get wet. Oh also, I had contacted the seller right after purchase to see where I could get some more Z rails and they sent them right over! No issues. Great company and superb product.

I ordered the 18" deep shelf for the pantry and was impressed by the quality so much that I ordered three 24" deep shelves for the garage. These are extremely versatile and easy to assemble. My garage has never been so well organized. I wholeheartedly recommend these over the cheaply manufactured Cosco and Sam's versions. A rubber mallet was very useful as the ONLY tool you'll need. One person can assemble these but it's much quicker with an extra set of hands.

As indicated in the title: once assembled, it is quite sturdy. You have the option to adjust the shelves to a lot of different spacings, which I did make use of. Instructions are not as clear as one might desire but if you have some reasonable grasp of mechanical things, just a little careful examination of things should enable proper assembly. One hint you may find you want to hit things a bit harder than the directions seem to indicate. I found a short 2x4 block of wood and a metal hammer to be more effective than the mallet they illustrated in the instructions. I guess the bottom line here is that, once assembled they are quite sturdy and will hold a pretty substantial amount of weight.

This was more expensive and not the quality shelving unit as those I'd previously ordered from Amazon that are no longer available. That being said, the shelves look 'prettier' and have greater aesthetic options for either white surface and white edge versus faux wood grain and faux wood grain edges. The biggest issue I have with them is the need for the 'Z' bar support cross piece under the middle of each shelf. Certainly it is to improve the strength of the shelf, but it also makes for a slight 'bump' beneath the base of the entire unit, as well as s bump beneath each shelf. Not a fan...

I have purchased 3 of these shelves in various sizes but love the 48" width x 24" depth x 71" height version for use in my garage. This product is designed/made in Korea and the flexibility of the shelf configurations is a bonus. This unit also comes with extra plastic feet supports for the different configurations to protect your floor, as well as plastic j hooks to hang stuff on and metal joints to combine units. It is recommended to use a rubber mallet and not a hammer to secure the metal sides to the metal posts. I have at least 100 pounds on each shelf and the unit is stable. It is more expensive that other units but the quality is there compared to other brands I have purchased.
