    • After switching to this dog food for a year, my maltese's live enzymes returned to normal!

My maltese is 9 years old, we've had him for 7 (rescued from a no kill shelter when he was 2). He has always been healthy except the last couple of years, his vet would always tell us his liver enzymes were starting to get elevated. Last year, the trend continued to where the enzymes were elevated enough to be seriously concerned and the vet started talking to us about corrective action (meds, Rx food which would have cost $70/bag, and possibly future surgery if it continued to get worse). I decided to try switching up his diet to see if it would help, and if in 6 month's time, things weren't getting better then we would do what the vet wanted. First change I made is that I cut back almost all treats...this was hard for my pup and I, b/c I loved giving him table scraps and he loved it as well. But I found that rewarding him with walks and a lot of play time was a way we both felt better about that change. Second thing I did was scour the internet for research on diets required for dogs with liver issues, and found that it needed to be lower in animal protein, and low in copper. I looked up so many reviews, and read so many labels, and finally decided to try this one. I love that the kibble bites are smaller so that for old and small dogs like my little guy, it helped a lot since he could eat easily without having to bite through large kibble. He LOVED this food. He ate it with gusto, and 6 months later his liver enzyme tests were coming down and showing positive change. We kept at it, and at a year's mark, his vet said that not only were his liver enzymes fully normal but that it didn't even look like he had any liver damage before. Had he not had the years of old tests in his system, he said he would have doubted that my dog ever had liver issues based on recent tests. I'm not a doctor or a vet, so it's possible that it wasn't the dog food that helped, but other than that and cutting out treats, there were no other changes we made. In the early months of our venture, I was giving him doggie liver enzyme support tablets that I bought from Vitamin Shoppe but I cut those out after only a few weeks because I noticed that the tablets were making him throw up more. I will say that he doesn't seem to like this food if it's been sitting in the plastic bag for a long time. He would avoid eating it, and would sometimes go over 24 hours without eating...until I bought a doggie food canister that was stainless steel and large enough to hold the small bag of this food. Since then, he never misses a meal and makes sure he eats everything in his bowl. I am guessing that after storing it in the bag for awhile, it might taste plasticky, but that's purely a guess. :) ... show more

I think it's hilarious that Amazon keeps hinting for me to write about the flavor of this dogfood. How should I know? Anyway, this is literally almost the only kibble on the market my Very Picky Lhasa will eat. He will eat Royal Canin and also sometimes Beneful Moist & Meaty which are an excellent substitute if you run out of your regular dogfood. What's really great about this Hill's Science Diet is that he has a very sensitive stomach plus serious allergies, and he can eat this dog food without any trouble. I used to only buy IAMS Eukanuba for my dogs, but I think my GSD literally got kidney failure right when they were recalled-so never again. Hill's is the Best. I know everyone is like No Grain! But Hill's Science Diet has kept my dog healthy for a really long time. Praise God! And I will only buy this for him-as in forever. The price is economical and it stays fresh and lasts a long time. His coat is healthy and soft. The little kibbles are great for him because he has tiny little teeth and I feel like the bigger kibbles are too much for him. He gets really excited to eat it, but to be fair, I do also add a bit of a topper as well. Like home cooked lean chicken and plain white rice. Something nice :) If my dog could write this review he might say something like, "when's Dinner?" or "Keep it comin!"-or if I am late getting his dinner ready he will come up to me and put his paw on me as in, "Do you realize I should be eating Hill's Science Diet Right now!" Anyway, We- I mean I-highly recommend Hill's Science Diet for all of your beloved furry family members-I feed my dog better than I feed myself some days- too much info? Just Buy it :) Dog's Love it! I picked this one because my little girl (Chihuahua) only has a few back teeth. She is 14+ years. We adopted her 18 month ago after we lost 😞 Lucy our 11yr old Baby to cancer. We heard about our Missy and how no one wanted her. Malnourished and withdrawn. The food they gave her in the shelter was a large kibble. That was all she got. She was starving. I started exploring different dry foods. This one is perfect! Very tiny, flat, crispy enough to break down easily. She could inhale 1/3 cup in a couple of min. Plus we feed her a wet food 1/3cup also. She is healthy & happy! ... show more

I have two yellow labs both around 11 years old, young now. They have always been active dogs, swimming, running, chasing the tennis ball, etc. and they have 5 acres of land to roam a pond and miles of wooded trails, a dog paradise. Last year I noticed a change in their behavior and looks not to mention they no longer had that young dog appearance. They didn't have much interest in the long walks or being outside much. I work from home so these two are with me all day in my shop and office, then with me and the family at night..I mention this as I would notice any change in these two immediately. They are basically my silent business partners and I'd be lost without them and their company. So I started looking into nutrition and supplements to help them out and found Hill's Science Diet and the results were amazing, simply amazing. A complete 180...their fur is much softer and no more itching, eyes are bright and the energy...wow, the energy levels of a three year old lab are back. We used to buy Pedigree and other lesser priced (20.00) bags and then I compared the ingredients of both. I now have no problem spending more for high quality dog food and my dogs absolutely love this stuff, it is worth every penny. It's such a great feeling to know that since they contribute so much to my family it's the least we could do to spend a bit more to make them happy and comfortable.
