  • Definitely a 5.
My previous review was in error, user error. This unit super. My apologies to the manufacturer and everyone else in the supply chain. MY PREVIOUS REVIEW The EF 600 DAC has 2 USB inputs 1 USB c and 1 USB b. I tried several different cables of Lighting to USB c to with the idea of connecting my iPad to the EF 600, none of them worked. THE EF 600 did not include a user manual so I went to their website. No user manual there but a telephone number and an email address. The telephone number is only good for sales support so I tried the email. The response was try a different cable. I've asked for a specific cable recommendation but so far haven't heard. Also when connecting the iPad to the EF600 using Bluetooth and my computer to the USB B port switching between the two isn't straight forward. If I listen on the USB and then switch to Bluetooth everything is fine but when I switch back to the USB B port the signal often is gone, very disappointing. Returning the product. ... show more

  • Open Your ears!
There has been no greater jump in audio quality for me than ditching wireless and tiny headphones and upgrading to this beast of a headphone amp/DAC. Unbelievable clarity, depth, and width of sound stage. Never going back.

  • Arrived with defect in DAC section, Amp section sonically inferior to EF400 model IMO
I ordered this hoping for an upgrade from my Hifiman EF400. I like the EF400, and the R2R DAC in the EF400 sounds very spacious and natural in NOS mode. But, the EF400 does not have DAC outputs and Amp inputs like the EF600. I would like to be able to use the R2R DAC with my other amplifiers, and use the built-in amp with my other DACs. Plus, the LDAC Bluetooth receiver in the EF600 seemed like a nice convenience, as well as the form factor doubling as a headphone stand. And, the EF400 has a well-documented design flaw where the DAC causes a lot of vinyl-like clicks and pops when playing back lossless FLAC files in NOS mode. This problem goes away in the sonically inferior OS mode, or when playing an M4A version of the same file instead of FLAC. So, I hoped Hifiman had fixed this problem. However, when my EF600 arrived, I noticed absolutely massive distortion in the bass when the hardware volume of the DAC section (accessible via USB Audio Player Pro) was turned up to levels that would drive the amplifier section to reasonably loud levels. Furthermore, the DAC would audibly distort (although not as badly) at very low settings of the hardware volume. I confirmed this was the DAC section causing the problem by connecting the XLR DAC outputs to my external amp. Massive distortion still there. And I confirmed the problem was NOT in the amplifier section by connecting my external DAC (Musician Pegasus) to the XLR amp inputs on the EF600. The amp section works fine. So my unit has a defective DAC / preamp gain stage section. I would hope that I got a defective unit, and that Hifiman didn't release this product with such a massive design flaw, like the aforementioned design flaw in the EF400 that causes static noise on lossless FLAC redbook files in NOS mode. I decided not to try another unit, because the amp section sounds inferior to the EF400 amplifier IMO- specifically it is a little lacking in the bottom end, just as some professional online reviews have noted, and the increase in power was not apparent compared to the EF400- neither will drive the HE-6SE to their capabilities, although either amp is plenty for anything but that and the Susvara. Despite these shortcomings, I probably would have kept it for the convenience factor if not for the major distortion defect. Disappointed, as I expected it to be an improvement upon everything I like about the EF400, but with the exception of the XLR ins and outs, it is not. Also, the play in the volume knob noted in other reviews is accurate. ... show more

  • HIFIMAN EF600: Refined, powerful, musical R2R DAC/amp with two sound signatures HIFIMAN EF600: Refined, powerful, musical R2R DAC/amp with two sound signatures
HIFIMAN’s EF600 occupies an unusual space in the desktop DAC/amp landscape: a vertically oriented, small‑footprint unit that blends a powerful Class A amplifier with the company’s flagship Hymalaya Pro R2R DAC. After extended use across planar magnetic, dynamic, and electrostatic headphone systems, the EF600 proves itself to be a highly capable, musically engaging component — one that delivers far more than its size suggests, even if a few ergonomic and QA quirks hold it back from perfection. Design & Build: Compact, Functional, and Distinctive The EF600’s tall, sculpted chassis is more than a visual statement. Its vertical orientation saves desk space, and the contoured top doubles as a headphone stand — accommodating large HIFIMAN ovoid ear cups. Venting at the top and bottom promotes natural convection cooling, and while the top panel warms up from exhausting heat from the Class A amplifier, it never becomes uncomfortable. A hefty toroidal transformer sits at the base, anchoring the unit and preventing accidental tipping. Connectivity is generous: RCA and XLR inputs and outputs allow the DAC and amplifier sections to be used independently, and the inclusion of USB, coaxial, and high‑resolution Bluetooth makes the EF600 surprisingly versatile for a minimalist design. Not everything is flawless. The bottom pad lacks grip and feels like an afterthought in the absence of proper footing to prevent the case from sliding, and the prismatic volume knob — visually interesting though it may be — is poorly secured and awkward in daily use. Amplifier Performance: Neutral, Powerful, and Confident HIFIMAN rates the EF600 at 5.12 W into 32 ohms (balanced), but in practice the amplifier feels even more authoritative. It drives notoriously demanding headphones like the Susvara and HE6se with ease, and most full‑size headphones require only the low‑gain setting. That low setting behaves more like a medium‑high gain, which is great for headroom but problematic for sensitive headphones and IEMs. A four‑gain architecture would have made the EF600 far more flexible. Sonically, the amplifier is clean, neutral, and controlled — a transparent partner that lets the DAC’s character shine through. Hymalaya Pro R2R DAC: The Star of the Show The EF600’s defining feature is its dual‑mode Hymalaya Pro R2R DAC, which offers two distinct sound signatures: NOS Mode (Non‑Oversampling) --Warmer, smoother, and more organic --Adds weight and punch to the bass --Produces a tube‑like richness without sacrificing detail --Ideal for treble‑forward headphones and long listening sessions OS Mode (Oversampling) --Sharper, more precise, more “delta‑sigma‑like” --Enhanced edge definition and clarity --Useful for analytical listening or genres that benefit from crisp transients The ability to switch between these signatures gives the EF600 a flexibility few DAC/amps offer. NOS mode, in particular, stands out for its musicality and fatigue‑free presentation — a quality that pairs beautifully with HIFIMAN planars, Grados, and even Stax and HIFIMAN electrostatic systems when used as a standalone DAC. Bluetooth Performance: Surprisingly Close to Wired Using a FiiO Air Link transmitter and maximum LDAC quality (24‑bit/96 kHz at 990 kbps), the EF600 delivers Bluetooth performance that is shockingly close to wired playback. The Hymalaya Pro DAC does an admirable job reconstructing a rich, engaging sound from the wireless signal, making the EF600 a legitimate high‑fidelity Bluetooth endpoint rather than a convenience feature. Usability & Ergonomics: Capable but Occasionally Clumsy The EF600 is easy to operate, with simple toggles for input and gain/sampling modes and a smooth‑tracking volume pot with excellent channel balance. However, several usability issues stand out: --The volume knob’s shape and looseness feel like QA oversights. --Cycling through gain and sampling modes with a single toggle is unintuitive; a dedicated NOS/OS switch would be far better. --Sensitive headphones and IEMs are difficult to control due to the high minimum gain at the Low gain setting. --The package includes only a power cable and antenna — no documentation, interconnects, or even a basic quick‑start guide. --Lack of EMF shielding under the plastic housing may limit placement options. --Lack of secure footing for the case causes it to slide when inserting or removing cables. --Missing features such as a 4.4 mm balanced output, optical input, variable pre‑outs, and an output selector reduce flexibility. None of these issues are deal‑breakers, but they collectively keep the EF600 from feeling as polished as its sonic performance deserves. A workaround for too much gain when using the USB input is to upscale the source signal to 32-bits and use digital volume attenuation at the source end. There is a resolution loss of 1-bit for every 6 dB attenuation. Likewise, using 24-bit Bluetooth codecs will be least affected by source volume attenuation. Use source preamp analog outputs into the EF600 line inputs to achieve the desired volume attenuation. A simple, effective workaround for the case footing is to apply small self-adhesive silicone cabinet door bumper pads on the bottom corners of the case. Contact HIFIMAN about the wobbly volume control knob. Verdict: A Musical, Powerful, and Highly Engaging Desktop Solution Despite its quirks, the EF600 delivers a level of refinement and musicality that is rare at its price point. The combination of a robust Class A amplifier and the exceptional Hymalaya Pro R2R DAC creates a presentation that is rich, engaging, and remarkably tube‑like in NOS mode, while OS mode offers a contrasting, more analytical flavor. For listeners who value musicality, drive power, and the unique charm of R2R conversion — especially those using full‑size headphones from HIFIMAN, Grado, or Stax — the EF600 is an excellent and compelling choice. It’s not perfect, but its sonic strengths far outweigh its ergonomic shortcomings. ... show more
