  • Obvious sound quality improvement with Raspberry Pi as Roon Endpoint
Very obvious improvement in audio quality installing the Solupeak HiFi 25W DC Linear Power Supply using my Raspberry Pi 4 as a Roon endpoint and directly powering a Topping D10s via USB. The Topping provides coax digital to a Wadia di122 DAC, to bypass a faulty USB input. Weight, authority, refinement and spatial cues significantly improved. This is in my office set-up. My speakers are close to the wall and it is not practical to shift them out the specified distance. I blamed shortcomings in the sound on the compromised speaker positioning. Amazed to find installing this power supply gave me improvements in weight and spatial cues that I thought would only come from speaker repositioning. My office set-up is now considerably closer to what I get on the main rig, where a Metrum Ambre is the Roon endpoint. Amazon-stated delivery time was originally projected to be very slow, as long as 2 months, so I assumed it was coming from China. But once shipped the delivery date changed. Received it in Alaska in 7 days from ordering. Tremendous value, highly recommended. ... show more

  • Good price, but it did not work properly
HiFi DC 25W DC Linear Power Supply 5.1V 3.5A was not very accurate. Output voltage varied constantly every couple seconds between 4.80V and 5.13V. The display constantly changed every 2 to 3 seconds with no change in load current. Amazon customer service was great and quickly sent a replacement. I checked the replacement before installing it and the output was 15.1V (not 5.1V). Amazon sent the wrong output voltage which could have destroyed my streaming device if I had plugged it into the HiFi Power Supply. This unit was returned and I purchased a similar power supply from another source. ... show more

  • Throw away the cheap USB A to C switched cable....
On the positive side, this feels like a solid piece of hardware, and it gives every indication it's a reliable, heavy-duty upgrade over standard-issue raspberry pi power supplies. I bought this to power a pi 4 streaming Volumio to my AC-powered MHDT DAC via the pi's USB port. Plugged it in, calibrated to 5.15 volts, seemed to work fine although I didn't notice the kind of dramatic sound improvements others reported. Nothing really compared to big changes I heard after replacing my generic USB cable with an Audioquest Carbon. Anyway, here's where the problems began.... I noticed after a day or so that the red power light on the pi 4 was blinking and going off altogether. Sure enough a command line "vcgencmd get_throttled" reported under-powered and throttling, something that had never happened before with a generic pi power supply. Even after adjusting the voltage up a couple ticks....low power, throttling. Solution was replacing the ridiculous cheap, thin switched USB connector with a high quality short distance fast charge USB A to C power cable rated for 3 Amps. Maybe mine was just defective, but I have a hard time understanding why you'd sell a brick of a power supply like this one only to dampen performance by shipping it with a $.10 connector cable.... Anyway, with the new cable red light power ok and "vcgencmd get_throttled" returns "0x0" for full power. Is the unit itself a heavy-duty clean external power supply as advertised? Yes. Would I buy this again? Probably not, tbh. My results only with my system, YMMV, esp. might make. difference if you have a config with peripherals that needs more power than the generic pi PSU. ... show more

  • Upgrade your WiiM with this Linear Power Supply!
I love the WiiM Pro for its ease of use and access to my music databases (local, Plex, Spotify, etc.). I read that some people were getting better sound from beefier power supplies than the one provided. All I had for comparison to the stock wall-wart was a UGREEN 65W USB-C GaN charger. When I plugged the Wiim into that (using USB-C-to-USB-C), the improvement in sound was immediately obvious. Everything had better definition and space, as if I had been listening through a thick curtain. It was not subtle. If you have 5V/3A charger laying around, try it out for yourself. That was all I needed to try something more substantial such as a linear power supply. (LPS). This device's good reviews tempted me to start here and I have zero regrets. Music quality on my meager hifi (Topping E70 DAC, into a vintage Forte Model 3 amp, into Emotiva B1+ speakers/Emotiva XS8 sub) is dramatically improved over the supplied USB-C charger. The LPS initially registered 5.11 volts but a few turns counterclockwise of the voltage regulator screw gave me a rock-solid 5.00 reading. Hifi can be incredibly subjective but it's always nice when an upgrade, especially one under $100, is readily apparent. The provided USB-A-to-C cable has an on/off switch but I swapped it out for a heavier-duty USB-A-to-C cable I had on hand and use the on/off switch on the back. Whether you get LPS like this, an iFi iPower power supply, or just use a charger you have laying around, at least try a heftier 5V/3A charger for your WiiM and see for yourself if there is a noticeable difference in sound quality. You might be just as surprised as I was. ... show more

  • Actually improves sound!
Wasn't sure how much power supplies affect sound in digital audio, but after noticing differences in sound when using different phone chargers to power Raspberry Pi+Volumio network streamer, I decided to try some low noise power supplies. This one is a relatively inexpensive linear power supply compared to what is out there but I noticed a significant improvement in clarity and dynamics. Also tried it to power a DDC (Douk U2 Pro) and had an even more noticeable improvement in performance than in the Pi+Volumio. Compared to competing low-noise switching power supplies, this seems to produce much more dynamic and "open" sound while sounding similarly detailed and resolving. Whether it's worth the price is subjective and any performance benefits to be had is likely dependent on the rest of your audio chain, but for those looking to eek out a little more performance for a small percentage of the cost of their system, I would recommend giving this a try as an upgrade for the streamer, DAC, or DDC. ... show more
