I had been in the market for a while for a CAC reader and the big reason I decided to go with the particular one was because of the company brand. HID is a worldwide leader in access card systems and so I knew that I would be able to trust the quality and usability of this reader. The overall build quality is pretty good. The main part the would hold your CAC card during use is plastic and the cable is your typical rubber or plastic like other cables. The CAC card once inserted actually sticks out at the corners which is not all in conflict with the regular use of the product. I use this product with the Mac OS operating system and as seen in the images the system has no problem seeing the reader and identifying the actual company. This does have a blue indicator light to signify connectivity and flashes when accessing the CAC card. I am not 100% if drivers are REQUIRED to use this reader (I don't remember if I installed any before my first use) however, if you need any you can find them on the HID website in the "drivers & downloads" section. If you are looking for a quality CAC card reader from a respectable brand look no further!

I visit Europe, and standard US credit cards (magnetic stripe) often don't work over there, especially at unmanned kiosks (train tickets, Metro, gas stations). The credit card standard in Europe is the (much more secure) chip-based system, and there are at least 2 ways that these chip cards work: (1) signature and (2) PIN (personal information number). To make things easy when I'm in Europe, I have several USA-issued chip cards (they're called EMV cards). However, they vary in how they verify customer information, and some won't work if you're asked for a PIN. Moreover, the info from the issuing banks is (surprisingly) sometimes inaccurate. So, I bought this little smartcard reader. Plug it into the USB port, and let Windows install the right driver (Omnikey 3x21). Then use a free program called Cardpeek. It interrogates the chip, and displays all of the encoded information - including whether or not the card works with a PIN. So now I know, for certain, how each of my cards should work. Also works with (for example) the Carte Navigo (a "rechargeable" card that is used for public transport in Paris); it tells you when the card expires, and even shows when & where you last used it (which is a little creepy...). Great USB reader. For $16 bucks, hard to beat !!!

No issues with this reading smart cards. I wanted something smaller for travel that wasn't a folding one which seem to break frequently. My only issue and why I took a star away is the obnoxious blinding blue light that blinks, persists, during read operations, or card reader usage. My other HID Global just has a faint green light that is only noticeable if you look at it. This you can't help but see.
