  • Amazing to find a short scale at this price.
First up, this is a 30” scale bass (I’m not sure if that was clear in the description, it surprised me). Second, I got it with a $40 off coupon, so I only paid $180. Firstly, Its unreal to find a sub $200 headless bass, never mind a headless short scale . To purchase this particular bridge and nut plus a comparable headless neck and some basswood is the same cost as this instrument new, so your getting free paint, pickups, pickguard, and whatever love was done. So that alone makes it a great deal (especially as a project, modding, or donor bass). That in mind, it’s not a fantastic instrument out of the box. This is with the stock strings, and factory “set up.” String spacing is good, and familiar to a jazz bass or Ibanez style nut, the neck is a little on the thick side, however it’s got a satin finish (vs typical gloss on cheap instruments), which is nice. Fret access is great for all 24 frets. Neck is a single piece of maple with a ok grain. Body is heavy. Not shockingly heavy, but on par with a similar sized 34” scale instrument that has a headstock. I’m sure it’s the bridge. Balance is good. There’s some neck dive, but it’s not a lot of work to correct (esp with a strap on). The Jack is higher up the back than expected, but it’s better up there I think. The bridge and nut are good. Very stable as far as tuning is concerned. The bass comes with a bag of Allen keys for bridge adjustments - but the wrench for the tuning knobs (a bugger to turn by hand) is magnetized to the bass side of the bridge. Super cool, but don’t lose it. The setup is ok. Playable, but needs work. Intonation is ok, but strings are pretty high, so it’s all gotta get redone. Frets are bevelled, but not rounded (so a bit pokey on the side). If your form is good it’s fine, but if your hand is lazy it can get uncomfortable. I did a truss rod adjustment and tweaked my action and intonation and now it plays great. The pickups are average at best. I mean they work, and are usable (especially with effects) but I would strongly strongly consider upgrading these eventually. They’re just…muddy. As good as you’d expect for a entry level instrument line this one. No hiss, at least. Overall, it’s a good purchase for a starter instrument or a travel instrument, or if you just want the neck and bridge grab it on sale. If you really want it to stand perform, or if you’re coming from other $500-1000 basses, I’d say a metal nut, new pickups (even without preamp), and a good set up including fretwork would have it sounding better than any given MIM fender, or upper/mid level Ibanez. Highly recommended if you want to get into headless and or short scales without investing a fortune. Edit: spent a few days with the bass, cleaned up the setup, and found the tuning adapter. Now it’s much better. Updates to reflect that. ... show more

  • Amazing for the Price point
Color: Black
They say you get what you pay for, but in this case you get more. Overall a fantastic guitar for under $200. It did need a little set up, and changing the strings early on will save some frustration. I added Ernie Ball 10/46 Regular Slinky strings and it made a huge difference. Couple of minor issues I dealt with. The pots were loose and spun easily when adjusting tone and volume. 10 minutes with a screwdriver (to remove the back panel) and a wrench to tighten the nut under the knob and it was good to go. I only opened the back to make sure the wires were not twisted (and they were not) so I closed it back up without touching much. Fret sprout was minimal, could have left that alone, but I cleaned it up in a few minutes. There was some fret buzz, but changing the strings, adjusting the relief 1/4 turn and adjusting the saddles easily took care of that. Intonation was spot on for all but the low E string. Easy enough to deal with. The neck fits to the body with no gaps and the torsion adjustment is easy to reach when needed. The neck needed a little oil and the frets needed to be polished a touch. Frets are a tiny bit high at 3, 7 and 11, but there is no buzz and it is hardly noticeable. I will likely deal with that the next time I polish the frets. This arrived set up as well as some of my other, more expensive guitars (and better than some I have seen). Guitar plays nice and sounds good. Basic pots and pickups, but they sound really good - especially for the price. Matte black finish is beautiful. It picks up oil from your skin, but wipes down easy enough. Reverse headstock looks really cool. This guitar is an excellent starter guitar, and would likely please even a more experienced player. Maybe someday I will upgrade the pots and pickups, but see no reason to rush into that, as it works great as it is. Only thing I re-emphasize - restring it with better, new strings. ... show more

  • Poor quality control. Needed modifications.
Color: Black
Out of the box the volume and tone knobs were loose. Quick enough fix if you know your way around guitars. The biggest issue didn’t become apparent until I went to change the strings. 4 of the 6 strings were completely stuck, I was not able to take them out. The bridge was almost completely covering the holes where the strings come through the back of the guitar clamping them in place. I was only able to remove them by unscrewing the bridge and taking it off completely. That is when I noticed the holes were crooked and so was the bridge. I needed to drill new holes into the guitar so I could screw the bridge on straight and not cover the holes so I could put the new strings. Only after completing this time-consuming fix was I able to change the strings. Even for a guitar of this price this is unacceptable. Perhaps I got unlucky with mine, but I can only write the review based on the one I received. ... show more
