They retain heat pretty well but you will need to use a towel when taking the bowl out of a microwave as it does get a bit hot. I tried out two different sets of bowls before I found these. I was looking for something more substantial than cereal bowls. Something that would work just as well for soups and for salads, or a breakfast creation. These bowls did the trick. The first set of bowls only stacked on top of each other, not inside each other, so they were unstable in the cabinet and the capacity was a little lacking. The second set stacked very nicely and had adequate capacity, but they had a rough texture inside and out. The roughness on the outside made them very easy to hold on to securely, but inside, the sound of a spoon or fork rubbing against it raised the hair on the back of my neck. So back they went. Then I found these. They stack very nicely, they have a smooth surface inside and out but are slightly wavy on the outside so your fingers fit in place around them so they are not easily dropped. And the capacity of the bowls was perfect. I love they way they feel in my hands when I hold them to eat. Also, the company that makes these makes matching bowls of different sizes along with matching plates, and other dishware. So, as time goes on, I can build a matching set in my favorite color.
