  • ★★★★★ When Life Gives You Moving Lights Cases, Make Studio Monitor Cases
Plot Twist: Not Just for Lights Anymore I bought the Harmony Audio HC2CH140SR with zero intention of putting moving head lights in it. Facing a cross-country move with expensive studio monitors and cringing at custom case quotes pushing $800+, I decided to get creative. This $200 flight case became the foundation for a DIY solution that saved me serious money while delivering professional-grade protection. Anatomy of a Road Case Conversion The HC2CH140SR's construction made customization surprisingly feasible. The 9mm birch plywood is thick enough to maintain structural integrity even after modification, while the black laminate finish resists chipping during cutting. Using a sharp utility knife (and plenty of blade changes), I carefully carved out the lower foam compartment to accommodate my studio monitors' footprint. The original high-density foam is dense but workable—it cuts cleanly without crumbling like cheaper foam. The case's internal dimensions (roughly 28" x 14" x 20") provided ample space for creative padding solutions. I supplemented the modified foam with professional moving blankets and shock-absorption padding from a local music store, creating a custom-fitted cocoon for each monitor. The butterfly latches, recessed handles, and smooth-rolling wheels proved their worth during the actual move. Even loaded with heavy monitors, the hardware performed flawlessly through airports, loading docks, and moving truck chaos. The Reality Check: Wins and Limitations What Worked Brilliantly: - Affordable enough to justify permanent modification - Construction quality rivals cases costing 3x more - Foam modification was manageable with basic tools - Wheels and hardware handled heavy studio monitors without complaint - Professional appearance prevented baggage handler abuse Considerations Before You Start Cutting: - Modification voids any warranty (obviously) - Requires patience and measuring twice, cutting once mentality - You're committed once you start carving foam - May need additional padding materials for perfect fit Mission Control: Real-World Applications This approach works brilliantly for anyone needing custom protection for valuable equipment at a fraction of professional case costs. Beyond my studio monitor application, I can see this working for vintage guitar amps, photography equipment, DJ gear, or other oddly-shaped valuables. Compared to Pelican, SKB, or custom case manufacturers, the savings are dramatic. A comparable custom case from SKB would run $600-800. Pelican's modular systems start around $500 before foam inserts. The Harmony Audio case's sub-$200 price point makes experimentation financially viable. For legitimate lighting use, the case performs exactly as intended for medium moving heads. But its real value lies in that sweet spot where you need road case protection without road case pricing. Final Curtain Call: Budget Innovation at Its Best The HC2CH140SR succeeded beyond expectations as a customizable protection platform. While purists might cringe at modifying a perfectly good flight case, practical users will appreciate the flexibility to create exactly what they need without breaking the bank. If you're facing expensive custom case quotes and have basic DIY skills, this case offers a compelling alternative. Just remember: measure extensively, cut conservatively, and embrace the satisfaction of solving an expensive problem with creative thinking and a sharp knife. ... show more

  • A great case that works!
I was hesitant in buying this case as the reviews nor questions would answer if this case would work for the Chauvet Intimidator 360 Spots and as you can see, it does! I was careful to read the inside dimensions and matched them up to the moving head's dimensions so I took the risk. I am so happy with the fit and the ruggedness of the case. It even fits the Chauvet Intimidator 360 Spot with its mount on as shown. Now all I need to do is add some heavy duty casters. The rubber feet unscrew so now I need to do is figure out the thread and screw in 4 heavy duty casters to allow it to roll. The case is heavy duty and made very well. I am a DJ and MC with over 1,500 events performed. I have a lot of experience with Odyssey, Road Ready and ProX heavy duty road cases and this case ranks up there with their quality at an incredible price of $230.00. I ordered the used one but got a brand new one instead. There was a slight ding on the bottom metal guard but after watching the Ring video that was caused by the FedEx guy when he placed it down on my cement and brick door step. If anyone is complaining about blemishes must understand it is coming from the shipping company. Plus, who cares about small blemishes anyeayd when the case is so heavy duty and will protect your gear. I will do a video followup in a few weeks. This case is worth it and can fit moving heads approximately the same dimensions as the Chauvet Intimidator 360 Spot. I believe there is slight room for a little larger moving head as well. ... show more
