Description

Cinema icon David Niven is on top form as the improbably-named Jasper O'Leary in this uproarious culture clash comedy from director Mario Zampi. Also featured are Hollywood star Yvonne de Carlo, professional Irishman Barry Fitzgerald and George Cole as a gormless yokel, Filmed in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio, Happy Ever After was framed for 1.66:1 for those few theatres at the time of release that could exhibit widescreen features. Both versions are included on this release. When General O'Leary goes to meet his maker after an unfortunate hunting mishap his Irish estate is bequeathed to a distant relative, Jasper. Jasper's new-broom tactics soon annoy the locals, however, and it's not too long before they decide he has to be "removed"...SPECIAL FEATURES:[] Image gallery[] PDF material

  • What you learn after you know it all
This is a 50's English "ghost" comedy that I'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard of. David Niven is the new squire who proceeds to make himself UNPOPULAR in the Irish countryside. It's up to the village idiot to kill him when the anger gets out of bounds. Not uproarious but amusing.

  • Charming piece of whimsy!
When a beloved benefactor (A.E. Matthews) of a small Irish village passes away, the town welcomes his nephew (David Niven) who inherited the estate. However, unlike his uncle, the money hungry nephew presses the townspeople for loans owed, rents unpaid and abandons institutions that his uncle underwrote. So, they decide to kill him. This amusing comedy with dark undertones might lay the Irish whimsy (even though it was filmed entirely in England) on a bit thick but it's so good natured in its deviltry that it's best to let it soak in. Niven seems to be having a wonderful time playing the heartless rogue and Yvonne De Carlo matches him as the glamorous, gold digging widow who returns to the village after her husband's death. The comedic finale where the village conspires to do Niven in by various methods (decapitation, scaring him to death, blowing him up) is deftly handled and full of chuckles. Directed by Mario Zampi. With Barry Fitzgerald, Noelle Middleton, Robert Urquhart, Michael Shepley and George Cole. Released in the U.S. under the title TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. I watched the Optimum DVD from Great Britain, not the Spanish import. It is a nice transfer in a full screen 1.33 aspect ratio. Some of the color seems a bit faded and it could use some touching up but it's eminently watchable. ... show more

  • They don't make them like this anymore .
If you do not find this one of the funniest ghost movies ever you probably have to learn to smile and laugh. The acting can not be equaled with today's actors. It is a true classic never to be made again. I made my wife watch it on TCM and it made her laughter contagious.

  • My Heart is Irish
This is a dated, but hilarious movie. It takes place in a little Irish village whose claim to fame is being the ancestral home of O'Leary, a 17th century Irish hero. Full of blarney, brogue and atmosphere, the story opens as the existing O'Leary squire, aged 82, dies after taking a tumble from his horse. In his will, he has left the estate and the debts of the village to a distant relative who "has lived most of his life in England." The story takes off as the new squire, admirably played by David Niven, begins to bleed the small village dry. Fed up with their new lot, the villages vow to take dramatic action. Amid anger, commedy and ghosts, the story moves along well. It is great fun and certainly family entertainment. I would like to see it available on DVD. ... show more

  • Remembering "Tonight's the Night"
I've wanted to see this film again for a long time. It's a movie I remember from my childhood as being "the funniest movie I'd ever seen." Well, many years have passed and there have been several funny movies. This one was mentioned in the NYT obit of Ms. DeCarlo, whom I remember from that time as "the most beautiful actress in the world," and who reappeared on Broadway singing "I'm Sill Here." Let's get this back on the market. Please! ... show more
