I bought this for my train track around the Christmas tree. Over my childhood and my kids we've collected a big bucket of the old wooden style train tracks. I had the idea to lay it around the Christmas tree and used this powered engine to pull the train around, it works perfectly. The wheels are grippy and stay on track though the more cars you add the quicker the battery will drain. 3 cars attached to the engine is plenty and looks cute and festive. Speaking of battery I highly recommend using rechargeable batteries. With some basic eneloop batteries I can switch this on for several hours at a time with no issue. Most motorized toy trains struggle with pulling many cars on a wooden track because of their light weight. This train has a metal botton that gives it the extra traction to pull many cars with ease. In a world of poorly designed toys, this was very impressive. My only con was that the toggle is hard for my two year old to operate. To turn the train off, you have to have the toggle in the center, and he will always push it into either forward or backward position, which he finds frustrating. This is one tough little train. It’s still holding up 3 months later with only one hiccup… one of the silver caps on a wheel popped off. I was able to hammer it back on and we haven’t had any problems since. My little one is hard on his vehicle toys. It is a great fit for the Step 2 track and train table. Two train cars slow it down a little bit but it isn’t meant to be fast. It rolls well over our rug and unfortunately fits perfectly under the couch Haha! My 5 yr old loves these. This time we bought him 2. We had one for about a year and the only reason that one broke was because we dropped a table on it. My child is energetic and quite strong for his age. So he tends to go through toys rather quickly. But this has dropped off his train table (chest height) multiple times a week and he sometimes leaves it running. However we only need to change the battery every 4 or 5 months. There are a two draw backs. Firstly they are not very fast. Second It can pull cars good on flat surfaces but it isn't great for hills if its pulling more than one car.
